last time i played mario 64 was when the Virtual Console first launched, and the last time i played B-K was when it came to XBLA. they definitely showed their age but I thought they mostly felt fine to play if you could work past that
I haven't played DK64 since it released, it's the only one of those three games I didn't finish, and every time I watch someone play it it just looks miserable
mario 64 plays really well for it's age imo. it is maybe a little boring now but only because it is a genre creator that has been iterated on a whole lot since it's release. my biggest problems last time i tried to play it was the camera is a little fiddly, but it's manageable.
there's a weird thing about video games where people talk about them as if they become completely impenetrable after a certain amount of time, like our modern brains just can't wrap around more simplistic or rough control schemes, or like we've gotten so used to HD graphics that we just can't stand looking at low-res fog-covered 3D games anymore
and like, of course things are always getting better and more refined and movement in an average 3D game today feels way better than an average 3D game from 20 years ago, and of course old 3D games seem a lot jankier now that they've lost any sense of novelty they once had, but i mean, people managed to play Mario 64 just fine in 1996. it feels a bit clunky and awkward now but it's just as playable as it ever was, it hasn't changed.
And where it really gets me is how that window of when a game slips over into being an old game that "aged poorly" feels like it's shrinking all the time. Like, okay, sure, the PSX and N64 are decades old at this point and they were some of the first attempts at 3D games and they're understandably clunky. But I've seen people talk about games from like, 2013 as being old and showing their age. Which seems incredibly silly to me.

If you were 12, a game from 2013 would be half your lifetime ago
i know extremely little about programming movement and stuff in a game, but it would be interesting to see someone try to make a romhack of mario 64 that felt better control-wise, just from using design lessons we've picked up since then. you'd be limited with what you could do camera-wise since there's no right stick but i wonder how much you could improve it just be making small tweaks to things like stopping speed.
Super Mario 64 is a very Important game that invented... literally everything about 3D video games that Doom didn't get to first
it's also borderline unplayable by modern standards, extremely blandy designed and should only be played for historical curiosity (or nostalgic affection)
much like Super Mario Bros., now that I think about it
I think mario bros has some really interesting things to teach about teaching the player the rules of the game naturally, but yeah it's not especially fun at this point
Lost levels though hell yeah
Lost Levels is mean and an evil game and should only be played my masochists.
Lost Levels is fun and you made yourself hate it by doing all the secret levels so you had to replay it a million times
I played the All-Stars version and therefore had to do no such thing, furthermore, the secret levels are way easier than the regular ones.

Grand Theft Auto V has aged very poorly for completely unrelated reasons.

Give me a version of GTA V with like...none of the writing, and just the big intricate world, and I'm into it
I mean none of the writing, up to and including all of the shitty billboards and truck names and shit
about 2 minutes into picking up my first "freak" i uninstalled the game and if i remember right claimed it was defective and kept crashing to get a refund from gamestop and i don't feel even slightly bad about it

Wow I can't believe you're single-handedly responsible for Gamestop's financial woes

Mario 64 is the only one that really gets me because to me it handles like it came out a few years ago
He has momentum and inertia appropriate to what feels right, he has a ton of available jumps he can do depending on how you move, heck it’s like the first 3D camera and it’s not that terrible. Maybe the level design is frustrating or primitive but actually playing it is still fun

like i said it's probably been over 10 years since i've played it but in my memory mario has a litttle too much inertia, taking too much time to get up to speed and too much time to come to a stop, and your air control can feel a little fiddly, partly cuz the graphics are simplistic enough that it's not always super easy to judge depth
starting up Worst Year Ever and wow these are some truly cursed predictions
Yeah I just got done with their episode 0. Robert's prediction is very high up on the "things that have almost certainly already happened and we just don't know about it" scale

I think if you were trying to make Mario 64 more player friendly, making Mario accelerate faster and not do as wide turns when changing direction would make a big difference.
I've played Super Mario Bros. very recently and it's still a very good video game. Mario 3 and Mario World are definitely better, but those two games are better than nearly every game, so
I’ve gone back to Super Mario Bros every two or so years of my life and it’s always a good time. Not sure I’d ever bother with the collectathon games again.

That being said I really did like Odyssey
Facial animation and stuff
That tech is still accelerating fast enough that like, mkx vs mk11s face tech is a huge difference
But in terms of game design and honestly even texture work I dont think games of that age have really aged at all
I remember thinking I would have preferred another 2d one because I thought the controls in 3d were so bad.
Same with ocarina of time honestly.
I wish I could have played more of the galaxy games. They seemed fun. But they gave me wicked bad motion sickness.

Did they ever make a sequel to Doki Doki Panic
PSN ID : DetectiveOlivaw | TWITTER | STEAM ID | NEVER FORGET
Yeah but it’s a weird visual novel
Please tell me they're still doing the "say you're a guy" bit during the ads? If so, I need to listen to the next episode.
Doki Doki Panic was a weird tie-in to, like, a festival? I'm not entirely sure, but I suspect that Nintendo doesn't own the rights to the characters.
I started playing ctyus ii on my phone and it's really fun
