I like three the most as a game. I like the idea of two the most. I’ve never played five but I really like the idea of the twist and it makes me a little happy every time I remember it exists.
I thought 4 was basically unplayable. Which is a shame there is stuff in there that's real cool. The controls just weren't 100 there for me though which made it tough. Like they were just close enough to perfect to be in like a controls uncanny valley.
They nailed them in V though, which was a blast to play but just lacked a kinda narrative pull that I wanted. Kinda the inverse of 4 for me.
I haven’t started the game yet, is there any real reason for the bad checkpoints, or is it something that could be easily patched out?
It feels like an intentional design thing
Basically you have "control points" which I guess act kind of like Dark Souls bonfires (although I don't think they respawn enemies)
So when you die to a boss you have to run all the way over there again, and they're always too far away for my liking, and also a lot of times story stuff doesn't repeat? So stuff goes from neat to frustrating pretty quickly
I didn't really mind Control's checkpoint system? Outside of the optional second [redacted] fight, I think I died like... Twice? Three times? And I always spawned close to where I bit it, and you don't lose experience or items or anything

What problems did y'all have with it?
Mostly when I died to a boss I wanted the option to just pick up from the start of the boss battle, and considering there were two bosses I died to a dozen times each, it got old having to run back even a relatively short distance
Am I an odd duck for liking MGS 2 and 3? 4 didn't look like my jam but I might play the others (like AC!D) some day.
EDIT: I too was shocked to hear Austin didn't like MGS 3. Then again I haven't played it in ages so maybe I'm suffering from some nostalgia goggles here.
Also, fun fact! The first time I played MGS 2 was on April 29th/April 30th. Freaked me right the heck out, lemme tell you.
I know sometimes I hit the "all bosses are bad" drum hard enough that it seems like I'm doing a bit, but I really think "here's one big tough dude, fight him or the game stops here" completely shreds the momentum of a game and is so so so much less interesting of a choice to mark progress than like, devising a set piece or challenge that might engage my mind more
This is not to say there aren't games that do that, or some combination of a boss battle and more creative problem solving. There are plenty of each!
But I do regret that the standard for the medium became "fight big guy"

There is a lot in MGS2 I like, and as a concept its super good. I just didn't find it very fun to play. It's self-referential nature to MGS1 and the nature of sequels on a meta level is great, except it also lead to a lot of the game feeling pretty samey at times, and it much harder to handle the MGS format of long cutscenes followed by short gameplay, long cutscenes.
Also besides Fatman and the boss fight against Solidus, I don't remember enjoying the boss fights as much as in other MGS games.

A literal joke about the fact that he had pedophile porn
Cool, cool
Rising, however, is the best MGS overall
I think it was someone advertising themselves as barely eighteen
Which hey, still scuzzy, and who the fuck knows if those allegations his former attorney made are true
That said, a separate matter.
MGS3 has not aged well in a whoooole lot of ways
I mean, it's already the best MG, just more so.

V, 4, and 3 are all roughly equal to me, but the other 4 i think are pretty locked in

I mean. I liked the sandbox style approach to the encounters. Though I do agree they could have done more to make better set pieces.
V has a lotta flaws
"There's like 3 bosses and only one of them is fun to fight" is one that doesn't get mentioned as much

Austin knows what's up
I've never seen him lawy!
The worst part of video games is your play
It’s a rare game where I enjoy the boss fight and aren’t just immediately relieved when it’s over
Bosses as are concept are pretty hit or miss in general.
I really like 3, cuz it's metal gear
But it also very much feels like "the metal gear for people who don't like metal gear"

The bees bring the one guy his Tommy gun
On one hand yeah, on the other hand that fight kinda sucks cuz it makes you wrestle with the fiddly grenade controls

... that field of white flowers though...

The end was pretty cool though
But the checkpoint system in control is so bad that I actually cant believe noone realized it before the game came out
I adore Control, and the checkpoint system is the one thing that made me tell it to go fuck itself
