I wonder if they'll get Square to let them do anything. We got two songs and exactly two Cloud spirits the first time. It'll be interesting to see if they've finally loosened up.
All the other DLC characters for Ultimate had spirit boards, wonder if Sephiroth will.
Notably, the Dragon Quest protagonist was allowed to have a spirit board even though he is also owned by Square Enix and had a very limited selection of music.
The main issue there was that the DQ composer rules the music rights to anything DQ-related and is a massive dick.
I'm not sure that any issues with FF7 music were ever that hard to get around.
Well. Today I found out that my phone’s hotspot internet is good enough that I’m able to play Ultimate online with a stable connection for the first time in about a year and a half (how sad is that, that this is legitimately my most solid option?)
Anyway, I also learned that the game’s standards had degraded far enough that one of my scores now qualified for Elite Smash, for the first time. No worries, I swiftly proved the game wrong with an avalanche of earnest failures, and forced it to put me back in my rightful place for now. Maybe one day I will find the elusive Gud and acquire it, but this is not that day.
Tried Banjo out; he’s pretty fun. Down B is a bit annoying in that you have to reverse it.
I thought it was worth reminding everyone that there's supposed to be a ~35 minute "Mr. Sakurai Presents: Sephiroth" tomorrow at 2pm Pacific/5pm Eastern/10pm GMT.
And that there's no additional character to be announced at that time.
It's frustrating that that is a thing that needs to be *said* less than one week after a character announcement, but such is the reality of this game's fanbase.
In 2018, some folks formed the Super Smash Bros. Code of Conduct panel to try to make things less toxic. Which is good! This week, it disbanded. Why?
“[T]he reality is that at, our current pace of work, we would need five or ten years just to go through all the accusations and possible cases brought up this summer,” project manager Josh Kassel writes in the panel’s official statement. “Thousands of hours would be spent listening to testimonies or getting details of the darkest parts of our community, and that is when you consider only the people from this summer. Any questionable behavior in the meantime would get added to a waiting list that could be a decade long.”
Turns out a child friendly game that has to be played in person for the best gaming experience ALSO attracts people who would prey on said children. Add to that the SUPER lax policies most cons/events had about having minors be chaperoned...yeah.
When tournaments are allowed to happen in person again, there needs to be a massive change in how things are handled.
Sephiroth looks pretty dang fun to play. And he's available today! Well, if you can beat the Sephiroth Challenge boss fight. Otherwise he's available on the 22nd.

His gameplay looks kinda like Ike with more range and some projectiles. He even has super armor on his smash attacks. He's apparently a light fighter, though, and is pretty tall so he has a larger hitbox.
- Mii costumes: Tifa, Barret, Aeris, Geno, and a Chocobo Hat.
- Sephiroth follows the established convention of characters with long range having bad frame data. His sword swings are heavily committed and have long recovery.
- Slash attacks are strongest in the top 50-80% of the blade, weaker at the tip, and weakest at the bottom half of the blade.
- Stab attacks are strongest at the tip and weaker below that.
- The forward aerial can be used for a free jump if you stab it into the wall.
- Sakurai takes a subtle jab at his detractors by talking about how the forward aerial comes out at frame 13, but the back air comes out at frame 15, before catching himself and saying "Wait, I'm just someone who wants to make a fun party game! I can't talk about these things..."
- The winged form is a contextually-triggered empowered state. You gain the wing if the game thinks you're doing badly, taking into account both your current % and your stock deficit. For instance, if you're down one stock to three, it can appear at 30%. If you're up several stocks, it won't appear even once you're well above 100%.
- While winged, Sephiroth gains better move speed, more damage on his attacks, super armor on his smash attacks, and an additional midair jump. He loses the wing after scoring a KO.
- Sephiroth's neutral B is a progression of Flare spells based on charge, with three tiers. Weaker Flares fly further but do less damage and have weaker explosions; stronger Flares don't travel as far but do far more damage.
- Sephiroth's side B is Shadow Flare. As shown in the trailer, it surrounds the enemy with balls of darkness that hit them later on. It's also a charge move; you can place up to three orbs in one shot, and up to five orbs in total on any one player. Other players can interact with these orbs, reflecting, absorbing, or Villager-grabbing them.
- Sephiroth's down B is Scintilla. This is an unorthodox counter move: it doesn't scale with attacks absorbed, but always attacks even if the enemy doesn't hit it with anything. It will absorb projectiles but not reflect them, and it only works in the direction Sephiroth is facing. Finally, if it takes too much damage, it shatters and Sephiroth staggers backward.
- Sephiroth's up B is Blade Dash or Octaslash, depending how much you charge it. Octaslash travels further and hits eight times. Sakurai calls it "surprisingly strong for a dash move".
- Northern Crater is a flat+plat stage. Competitively viable, maybe! All the madness going on in the background is strictly cinematic and has no effect on the action in the foreground.
- Nine new songs from FF7.
And, as Cruor said above, there's a bonus mode where you can fight Sephiroth in a Stamina battle, and if you win, he unlocks early.
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.

He has super armor on his smashes if he has his wing out. His projectiles look tricky. [X]Flare seems nice in an advantage state, but you ain’t gonna be zoning out a quick runner like Pikachu with how long it takes to fire.

Of note on the songs, Sakurai specifically talked about how hard it is to license songs because they can appear in multiple games, with multiple copyright holders around the world. Sounded to me like they pushed really hard to get more songs this time around, knowing people wanted them... and they couldn't secure all the rights they needed.
Still an impressive lineup.
... I wish I would've noticed the Amiibo alert earlier in this thread. I pre-ordered BK today, buy Byleth and especially Terry were already in "coming soon" mode. Sadface.
Well, at least the rumor mill can finally shut up about Geno.
I feel like Mii Gunner with a proper Geno costume does a pretty good job as a stand-in. Geno already had goofy proportions like that, and the moveset suits the character pretty well too.
Is there any reason to beat the Sephiroth Challenge on the different difficulties other than the satisfaction of doing it?
After logging in to play Sephiroth, I realized I haven't played Smash since Steve came out. Shows how enthusiastic I was about that DLC character. The Minecraft stage is pretty nice to look at though.

Mostly just bragging rights
Thanks. I figured that was the case. Didn't want to spend time on it if I didn't have to.
It must have been intentional for the Northern Cave stage animation to be just about 6 minutes long. Advent: One Wing Angel is just about 6 minutes long too. Set that as the only song and do a 6 minute timed battle. That's how you play that stage.

I beat it on Easy to get the unlocks, then went back and tried it on Normal. Took me three tries; the second ended when I had him down to 8% while I (playing Cloud, of course) was twenty-something, and then Seph managed to sneak in a move that KO'ed me. Third try ended in almost the exact opposite way, I was 8.5% and he was ~25% when I got the win.
Tried it on Very Hard a handful of times, got pretty close but decided to let it go (for tonight, at least) after a while.
Super-early impression of Sephiroth just from me and a friend messing around is that he's pretty good. Always subject to change since we don't really know what to be at both with and against him yet, but there's enough about him that's strong that I can't see him being bad.

Note: This is not the case; Sakurai said it does, and in my testing I killed a DDD at 60% with it at ledge. Because I countered a Gordo.
Edit: Also Sephiroth is fun as hell
Lucky the gordo doesn't break it. Poor things.
Eh, I imagine the cutoff is probably around 20-25% and a single gordo hit only does ~15%, so it makes sense.

Seph challenge was pretty cool. Loved the custom UI to start it. Very Hard took me a little bit of time, probably around an hour. I did it with Falco playing keep-away, reflecting projectiles, and teching throws into combos when Seph got close.
Been trying to do Very Hard with a bunch of characters. So far I've done it with K.Rool, Bowser Jr, Bowser, and Ike (with Ike I kinda cheesed it by hitting him with an off-stage Aether). I think I had the hardest time getting him with Bowser as Sephiroth just has so many options to stop Bowser's approach.

I’m a bit concerned that a year+ of no local tournaments is going to allow enough time to pass since the terrible summer to give some of these people a chance to worm their way back in. There were a ton of people implicated, the year had a looooooot for us to process besides Smash, and you haven’t seen these people in a while. Sure, high-profile players like zero and d1 aren’t going to have that opportunity, but your third and fourth string players may. Even if it’s only a matter of time before they get caught playing again, it’s time they have to harm people.

Kirby has access to a pretty hot new B.
Also love to see how effortlessly Sakurai goes through his Classic mode.
"I thought I was developing a fun party game!"
You know he he took those hits from the Hands on purpose just to finish off in Wing Mode all dramatically.
“Nobody ever said that having a mii costume disqualifies a character. You’re just spreading your fanfic about the game’s development.”
I will hold out hope while breath is still in me!

solid, kinda slow swordsman with a varied ranged kit and decent recovery
