I know it's gauche to post rumours, but I saw some stuff on Resetera and thought it was interesting, so...
Someone posted a nonsense leak, and a poster with a past history of tidbits of insider information (Imran) called it as such, before noting that it did contain some small things similar to what they had heard. They then dished a bit themselves, though hedging their bets with a "maybe all my info is bullshit" preemptive walkback:
Sephiroth is cheaper than he usually is as a recommendation from SE, but not because of Hero
Byleth has a decent bit of the moveset of a character that didn't make it due to negotiations falling through, but Byleth was supposed to be in the main roster and were moved to DLC well before the game came out, they weren't a late replacement
Minmin was indeed partly because it's easier to get Nintendo characters
When pushed on the Byleth stuff:
My understanding of the timing was:
- Plant and Byleth were planned for base roster
- Plant was much more finished than Byleth, which was basically a model and some ideas
- The Three Houses delay let Nintendo put Byleth on their list of DLC characters for Smash, Plant was the transitional DLC character
- They got put on [the] backburner for FP1
He noted later after several people guessed Byleth swiped moves from Monster Hunter (and without confirming Monster Hunter fell through) that the Monster Hunter team is open to having monsters and levels cross over but not hunters themselves, since they weren't happy with how Monster Hunter turned out in Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite.
Update's (officially) up, and it looks like Square actually allowed them to do spirits this time! Granted they're all from Final Fantasy 7, but still.

It would be super interesting to hear how all the negotiations go regarding these smash characters. It seems like Sakurai is more than willing to go out of his way to get tons of well known and wanted characters. It would be cool to hear what the responses are from their owners. Obviously some end up like that possible monster hunter situation but some others were like super excited to be considered.

Given everything I really do think Square was a bit embarrassed when they found out every other company let them do tons more stuff in Smash.
Scuttlebutt from the above thread is that the DLC budget is tighter this time around, and that Square offered Sepiroth for cheap. Supposedly Steve was in the works for quite some time due to technical challenges. If that's true, it might be time to temper expectations for the next three a bit, especially since Nintendo as a whole is making the overall calls rather than Sakurai.
But yeah, I'd love to hear about just what level of negotiations have to be going on. I mean, just the one second of Banjo and Kazooie reacting to Sepiroth in the intro video had to involve at least a little back and forth with Microsoft. It would have been easier to just not do BK at all, but they did.

I mean tight budget means hope for internal ips instead of it being all guest characters.
I can't imagine how they could ever manage to make another Smash Bros after this. I get the feeling that Ultimate will just get ported for the next couple of generations.

I would bet the next Smash will effectively be a reboot.

Just make the cat! Cats are honestly more emblematic of Monster Hunter than the actual hunters are anyway - there are monster hunter games without hunters, but not a one without the Felynes! and it's a lot easier to make a good fighting game moveset for.

Yes, keep porting it and adding more characters until “everyone is here” becomes literally true and the character select screen has multiple pages…

I'm pretty sure Sakurai has gone on the record that any future smash would definitely have a cut down roster, but I'm a terrible internet person who's too lazy to go look for a source on that.

All things considered, however, if Smash Bros. is to continue as a series, I don’t think it will really be feasible to bring in this many fighters or titles again.

I also think either Ultimate or the next Smash is planned to be his last with the series?
He’s been saying that since Melee, so take it with a serious grain of salt.
The next Smash will be interesting. Losing so many characters would demand something rather big to mix things up in order to justify it existing. I’d say actually gearing as a competitive title, as I feel like any attempts to amp up the wacky party stuff is going to be seriously undermined by roster cuts. No amount of items or cool stages are going to make up for not being able to play as Sephiroth or Mega Man. Competitive players, however, would likely respond well to a smaller, more tightly balanced roster with things like rollback and a proper ranked mode.

I don’t know how you release a new game and cut back heavily on the characters. One thing I have seen across all fighting games is many people do not respond well to losing characters.

Competitive fighting game players are, however, not really large enough of a market segment to actually bother with catering a game to them, when talking about a series that is used to the kind of monumental sales numbers Smash gets.

The only way forward is out. Specifically, adding a third axis of motion like Soul Calibur et al. But the real trick will be getting that to work with 3+ fighters on screen.
Having only just got the game last year for Christmas, I have finally "beaten" the game, specifically the World of Light. It was a pretty amazing final section, and Joker for Persona 5 makes a lot more sense for the game now.
Since the game was secretly a SMT game all along, with the usual Law/Chaos/Fuck You, You Both Suck endings. I loved the bit where you play as Master Hand, too. Five generations and they finally gave us the chance!
You know what? Nanowrimo's cancelled on account of the world is stupid.
Been getting back into Smash a bit. Got a few characters to Elite Smash yesterday - Terry, Incineroar, Rock, Ridley, and Samus. It's honestly kinda funny that I can get here considering I can do literally nothing that requires any kind of quick execution - my typical attempts at even basic stuff like Yoshi OOS aerials generally end up in getting bonked.
Mega Man. Sorry, longtime fan of the megaman series, so I tend to call the classic Mega Man by his given name Rock to differentiate him from all the various Mega Men in the series.

Are you like, using forward air out of shield and getting bonked? Yoshi nair is one of the best OoS options in the game, I'd be very interested in seeing how you play if you can get to elite smash without doing something like that.

I always thought of Rock as being his identity when he doesn't have his combat equipment, so I'm not surprised I didn't make the connection. Also, I mean, it almost never comes up in the English material.
Mega Man's Smash Bros amiibo is the only non-Splatoon one I've got. And I didn't even get it for its connectivity functions, I literally bought it as a desk decoration.

Can't really show you how I play, no capture card or anything, but yes, basically, stuff like spotdodge and counter or actually connecting with Yoshi nair out of shield is stuff I can't regularly manage at all. I have zero execution speed and if any of my characters have proper combos I sure don't know them. I just kinda do spacing and prediction and a bit of offstage chasing. This is probably why I tend to favor the heavier (or more projectile-y) characters - I also have Bowser a couple wins away from Elite Smash, since the others got to Elite by 8.25 million and he's at about 8.

I started buying up Amiibos as idle collection nonsense until I stopped for a second and thought out how much it'd cost to actually collect the whole roster.
...still probably going to try and find banjo and krool, though.

I’ve played fighters for freaking ever at a fairly good level and I couldn’t even sniff elite smash with a single character. Then again I don’t think I have ever even established an out of shield strat either.
I can almost instantly adapt to anything else but I struggle immensely at getting the concept of smash. I still enjoy it and can use other conventional knowledge like positioning and getting people to wiff, but I also can lose to simple repeated things and never know how I was supposed to beat it

As said, I'm also mostly working though fighting game fundamentals like spacing and positioning and such. It's just that the kind of physical space Smash happens in, with its larger arenas and almost-platformer physics, kind of works for my brain more than the standard Street Fighter locked movement? For some reason I have a much easier time parsing space in Smash than I did in Melty Blood back when I could chain three buttons together and so I could play that.

Oh yeah smash jives with my brain way better than traditional fighters. Killer Instinct I was able to stomach because its combo assist feature is intuitive and fun, but playing neutral around their version of blocks while jumping in so committal... just couldn't wrap my head around that style of play.
By the way, a question. Is there any way to remove specific stages from your online ruleset without just putting in Omega Only? There are so many stages that make for fun fights that I positively refuse to just go Battlefield Only, and instead have it set to Random with no hazards, but this sometimes sadly results in hitting, like, Flat Zone.

That is not an option and it sucks. I wish they let us select a map pool and match into people who have overlapping choices.

Given how early it loads in the map information I’m not sure that’s really an option. I think it gets the tileset ready and then chooses a rule set.
I’ve spent two weeks trying to get incineroar into elite smash, and I can manage oos options. I am bad at almost every other tech, including fastfall because my brain refuses to understand that you input the aerial THEN input down if you want to fastfall an aerial.
I’m at like 7.3 million, and only starting to manage concepts like “spacing”.
