Boston's great! I got Boston travel down pretty good -- you park at the end of a train line like Oak Grove or Alewife and take the T in. It's never let me down.
what's great is that the file system was a perfect solution to the problem of managing files and organizing serious work on a computing device. it remains the only reasonable tool for doing so. tablets and mobile devices hid the concept as long as they could but as app interoperability becomes more important and people do more real work on devices, they are having to expose or reinvent it.
and people are just as fucking knuckle-dragging thick about it as they always have been, so it's only a matter of time before some tech company disrupts by making yet another class of less capable, easy to use device that can get away with not having an exposed file system or multitasking, or any of the stuff that confuses people
I'm hoping for a robust auto-tagging system that works for all files that can also take custom tags. Both Windows and MacOS have some of these features, but they don't work well enough for my purposes AFAIK.

Something I found even more infuriating than trying to find vintage pornography on a mac was trying to find a fucking file I downloaded on my Android, because that folder mgmt system feels completely siloed on each app, which creates a sub-sub-sub folder amongst a wasteland of otherwise-empty folders

I hope now that Steam lets me launch Destiny it'll stop telling me the servers are down.
Looking at transportation options for PAX South and it is not ideal. It's a five hour drive but that sucks and I'd have to pay for my car's parking so I'm trying to look at alternatives that don't involve flying and why is there no bus that leaves at like, 10 and arrive at 7? No it's either leave in the early afternoon and get there in the dead of night or leave at the crack of dawn. And then there's Amtrak which takes 13 HOURS to get from Longview to San Antonio.
rent a small plane and fly yourself there
pros:
1) relatively short travel time
2) you'll arrive in style
3) no traffic
cons:
1) a bit expensive
2) rental company might need you to demonstrate that you actually know how to fly a plane, which means spending more $ on lessons
Hah, yea, I'm bad enough on regular planes and worse on small planes that my boss has us fly in for store trips. Flying one? I'd be a crater/footnote on the evening news

Unless you are in the woods outside the fencing of a compound or standing at an armed checkpoint, always take tons of photos of government buildings. Go full tourist squat be kahrazy.
I can’t! I’ve taken too many security trainings to not feel very conscious and bad about it. And I’m not a tourist; I was born here*!

Who are the NYC chatters again? I'm getting distraught trying to figure out where to park in Manhattan. Or like, should I park outside Manhattan and take a train in?
Bring $40 and pay for a whole day parking spot in a garage.
it's $50/day minimum in Chicago I would think Manhattan would be even more
Thanks, yeah, I've been trying to get an estimate and some garages quote $175 for the three days we'll be there. That's what makes me think parking outside the city and taking public transport in must be cheaper, but I'm not sure where to go.
where are you coming from?
Driving down from New Hampshire -- map says to take I-95 south pretty much the whole way.
Edit: JK I start and end on 95, but take other stuff on the way: I-95 S. Take I-495 S, I-290 W, I-90 W, I-84...
Park in Boston and take the amtrak down
Serious advice: avoiding the stretch of 95 between Hartford and Stamford is almost guaranteed to be a good mental-health decision.

There are two systems that I think people handle well, one that gets used incredibly often and one that I would like to see more of:
(1) Search - just type in words relating to the thing you want and the system finds it for you, this is incredibly effective and almost always preferable when the search is good. When I am working on a big project I don't want to look through the files I want to type a word and get the thing I was looking for.
(2) Spatial Analogy - People's brains are oriented to remember things as existing in a space that they can have an internal map of. The memory palace is an incredibly effective method of memorization. I think file systems are really so successful simply because they have that sense of existing in a space where you can look in a place for a particular thing. I think this analogy could be taken a lot further, though, and interfaces could be better organized around this idea of being a map of things in virtual space (ideally while remaining simplistic and not being over-wrought).

But now is such a great time to lock yourself into a hundred hours of grinding to never be able to play with your friends anyway.
You are very unlikely to be locked out, just go over to bungie.net and login to something and see what you need to do. It was very painless for me. Also they make it pretty easy to play with your friends?

Classic MacOS went hard on the spatial model and I think it worked ok for some people, but the downside was that it was a little clumsy and ugly, just like most people's actual desktops. I think they started to lose people in the OS X era with shit like smart folders, defaulting to list view, breaking up the hierarchy with virtual locations, and eventually abandoning the Desktop as root concept entirely for the more abstract "favorites" type model they have today.
Sure it looks cleaner but nobody fkin knows how to navigate it because it's so abstract.
regardless, a ton of people never understood this iteration of an uncompromising (but messy) physical model in the first place. so I wouldn't be so sure it would work.

I'd like to go to karaoke and see someone do "Money For Nothing" forgetting about THAT VERSE and just staring like a dear in headlights while the Curb Your Enthusiasm theme plays.
It'd be more entertaining than the groups that play "you've lost that loving feeling" without knowing that the song is more than 40 seconds long
Also, yes, that verse contains the word “faggot” but:
1) I always interpreted the song as dialogue spoken from a middle aged manager type to his young retail employee—in which case it’s dialogue from a character in the song who is distinct from the narrator and who is the target of gentle ribbing
2) in the song world, the term as used is not even directed at actual gay people, but instead at people who are presumptively straight (rock stars) but whose gender bending presentation confuses the middle aged manager character who’s in the process of begrudgingly admiring their wealth and admitting that “them guys ain’t dumb”
Like yes hearing the word can be intrinsically uncomfortable now that we’ve all decided that it’s bad, but honestly the actual use by Dire Straits is shocking NON homophobic for 80s pop culture!
Thanks for your help @Tcheldor, @Deebaser, @bowen, @matt has a problem, @Kamiro, and others who chimed in. I'm going to keep looking into this -- Scarsdale could be a good option but I'm not finding parking options for that station yet.
Battery Parking Garage is close to where I'm staying and says it'll be $152 for the whole stay. On a scale of 1 to 10, how awful do you think this drive would be?
My son last night when it was time for bed time bed time (as opposed to get in your bed and shut up for two hours...) kept asking for more and stupider things before he'd lay down. At one point standing up and just pointing nebulously in the dark to things in his room. I imagine my parents put up with this same behavior for me once upon a time

Depends on time of day.
If you're coming in during the morning or evening then you'll be on the FDR for about 45 minutes probably. If you show up in the afternoon closer to 20-30 min. Coming out is the same. It's not usually horrific.
It's not a horrendous price or anything for parking.

Yes, that song was 100% obviously meant to be from the perspective of a character, not a reflection of the band's own values.
But that doesn't matter to a certain breed of Twitter/Tumblr user, who believes that bad words are bad regardless of context, and even talking about the slur is just as bad as calling somebody the slur
