The gigantamaxing is better than the dynamaxing since it's more than just "pokemon, but big"
But in what way does it put more focus on a single mon than Megas did?
It feels like a similar situation unless there's something I missed about it. Plus some of them even seem to have special moves and effects for the rest of your team which makes them seem like potential team build-arounds.
Wow yeah. There is some serious negativity being thrown at this video. Yikes.
I mean, I don't hate Dynamax/Gigantimax. But I'd also rather just have more Mega Evolutions. This seems like an unnecessary new system, and it is less appealing than both old systems it is replacing.
Also, I don't think anybody cares enough about Gigantimax to want an entire video dedicated to it.

I deffo agree with that part.
If we are going to have a "special stronger version of pokes that you can use 1 of at a time" then they really should have just used the system they already had in place for it.
Although I guess the difference is that it is sort of both of the old systems combined into 1 since they each get a special move as well.
So as I type this it's starting to make more sense to me. Instead of having 1 mega and 1 z-move per team it moves you back to having just 1 special thing but a combined version of each so neither is left out.

Because they're freakin huge
Ohh. Ok I get what you mean. I thought you meant gameplay wise. But yea, I'm not into them becoming gigantic either. I wish they just had the cool alternate models without suddenly becoming the size of a building.
So, my impression of "maxing" so far seems to be that it's, mechanics-wise, basically just a combination of Mega evolution and Z moves. Is that about right?

That's a fair assessment. A power boost every Pokemon can use, some of them change forms and some of them do new things. My hope is its not as much of a single-turn-surprise game changer as Z moves were, and not as mandatory for the team and metagame centralizing as megas were.
I like these new Gigantimax forms a whole lot, but having 2 be LGPE transfer exclusives, 1 is a pre-order bonus, and 1 is Charizard again means that my excitement is significantly tempered. What does this mean for Gigantimax/Dynamax in competitive play if its restricted to certain individual Pokemon?
...is there some sort of English/Japanese/whatever folklore that explains why Meowth gets turned into a dachshund?
Cats can stretch out quite a bit. It's also an old meme.
Eh. I'm also old, so wake me up when Pokemon references Mr. T Ate My Balls.

The forms are fine (well, the Charizard one is both boring and unnecessary, but the others are good).
It just dings my excitement for a new region when they put out a video like this one month out and it's literally all Kanto mons. Again. The Kanto hate is getting old hat at this point but that's because they won't stop pushing it!
We also haven't seen all of the gigant/dyna-capable pokemon. This video only showed off 5 new mons with that capability. All Gen 1, sure, but we already know Alcremie, Corviknight and Drednaw all have new forms, too. I feel like they've only scratched the surface for now.
The info drip is slow, and all everyone wants now is instant gratification because that's how it's been with the internet and datamines.
It's also good. "Longcat" Meowth is phenomenal and works because even if you dont' get the reference (is it even intentional??? I am not sure) hes a big goofy boy and I love him.
Dynamaxing makes sense to me as a replacement for Mega Evolution because it's something every Pokemon can do. If one of your favourites didn't get a Mega Stone as you leveled through a game, well, you just didn't get to use that feature. But with this whatever dude you want on your team can be your big hero. Then they've also got Mega-style alternate forms for that aesthetic. It's frustrating in the sense that all GameFreak's continued abandoning of features after a generation are, but the design decisions that lead to it are ones I appreciate.

don't forget that even if one of your favorites got a mega evolution there's a good chance you still couldn't get it until postgame because gamefreak were collectively smoking some wild shit when making XY
Z-Stones were annoying like that too because many of the unique ones were locked behind obtuse objectives. And the generic ones were gated by story and some of the more desirable Z-Stones were super late into the story.
Weren't most of the mega stones only able to be found at a specific time of the day in specific locations with zero in game hints that leads to screw this I'm looking it up online?

Yes, XY's mega stone sidequest was a post-game thing where between 5 and 6 PM or something you could find sparkling spots around Kalos. There were also "version exclusive" megas too. It was all incredibly awful.
Sun and Moon hid a few Z moves in weird places (I think the Psychic Z Move is the worst offender?) but most of the rest were either found through the story or otherwise very easy to get (its very hard to miss Ice) or the end result of side quests (Eevee). My point being that Game Freak hasn't 100% figured it out but they're definitely getting better at it... which is why the news of LGPE exclusive Gigantimax forms is potentially very troubling. Hopefully they'll be illegal for competitive battling to remove issues of access.
If you took part in the Ultra Final Online Competition you can redeem your shiny Tapu Koko now on the Pokemon Global Link!
I've really enjoyed the Gen VI and Gen VII Global Link tournaments- I know a lot of people bemoan the lack of Battle Frontier in new games, and I definitely miss them too, but having fun rules for tournaments like this has been a worthwhile trade-off in my opinion. It looks like Sw/Sh will have an even better online competitive system, so hopefully we see something like these tournaments again!
It varies a lot from game to game. It should be available for pre-load pretty soon though.
Also, something noteworthy that one of the previews mentioned: Sword & Shield doesn't make you go through the "how to catch a Pokemon" tutorial if you've managed to catch a Pokemon beforehand.
If the latter, then you could perhaps get it more easily/cheaper from a rental service or library.
It has to be a save file. Switch only has one cartridge slot, while the saves are on the console itself. If you own both Let's Go and Sword/Shield on cart, it's impossible to insert both game cards at the same time, but the Let's Go save file remains accessible.
Since that's the case, I wonder: what about the Let's Go demos? If that doesn't save or the save doesn't qualify, a rental would be an ideal way to produce a save file.

Feels weird to put so much focus on one of your mons
Megas handled that better, IMO
That said, it's funny to see how many people are angry that Gamefreak didn't spoil more of their game in this trailer
But in what way does it put more focus on a single mon than Megas did?

No megas in this gen though

I assume it's a meme. Maybe even the picture that was posted above.
But I'm a grumpy old man who hates memes and I wish game companies would keep memes out of my video games.

It's like... really goddam old.
I've become very good at staying off of sites that are meme heavy and curating my own internet experience.

Hmm... I'm older than you and don't hate memes... does that make me a generation traitor? Do I get to be an honorary Millenial?

Typically they show up about a week in advance for pre-download I think?
