i'd prefer if swsh wen't the lets go route and you could just do all the pokemon stuff on the menu wherever you are. Changing the team, renaming, all that, and no boxes either, just a scrolling interface. It's so much better. The game is so much more than menus and random inconveniences.
also, played some more Platinum, and people are not exaggerating when they complain about 4th gen being slow. Battles feel like I'm running a video on 50% speed, even with text on fast. and the encounter rate is ludicrous, to boot. everything takes ages.

Platinum's the sped-up version, if you can believe that. Diamond and Pearl were even slower.
After playing Diamond I had to take a multi year break from Pokemon. I didn't really know why at the time, but after talking to others and listening to discussion surrounding that generation I believe it was because of how slow everything felt. When I finally moved on to White years later it felt like a huge improvement.
Looking at the various regional dex's and the pokemon to not appear in any outside their original regions, and are not yet confirmed for SwSh, I have compiled a list of pokemon that need some love and could get Galarian forms.
No starters, legendaries or mythicals.
Gen 1: Venonat, Krabby. (Appeared in Johto but I'm going to count them)
Gen 2: Stantler
Gen 3: Shroomish, Cacnea
Gen 4: Kricketot, Shinx, Glameow, Spiritomb
Gen 5: Blitzle, Drilbur, Sewaddle, Darumaka, Yamask, Klink, Tynamo, Bouffalant
Gen 6: Skiddo, Spritzee, Binacle
(Deerling and Vivillon already have multiple forms so probably wont happen)

Galarian Cacturne drops Dark for Ghost because it's a succulent in a country beset by neverending rain
Does anyone happen to have a defiant Farfetch'd? I wanna breed a shiny one before sword/shield. I've got a spare perfect regenerator mareanie you can have for letting me breed myself a copy of the hidden ability.
Johto has a lot of memorable stuff. The legendary dogs and the birds story, Kurt and all the nifty balls, plus you get to revisit Kanto so it's by default like, the longest story mode

I mean, my opinion these days is I'd rather the new region be Larger and Full of Fun Stuff than splitting the game in half and letting me go to an old one, which is 100% the dev-time trade off that would have to be made to accommodate this kind of thing. It'd be even better if we didn't progress through Generic Forest, Generic Hot Area, Generic Ice Area again, which may be why I loved Alola so much. It did all that stuff but the tropical spin made it all feel fresh.
Gen 2 was great when it came out and I love HGSS, and miss some of the HGSS special features (following Pokemon & Battle Frontier), but I also wouldn't go back to it. For me they aren't even the most memorable games in the franchise. The series has moved on for the better, imo. I didn't even finish Let's Go Pikachu so I am not itching for a Let's Go 2, I'd rather see DLC/SwSh2 with Battle Frontier. I am totally aware I am in the minority here.

The birds and dogs are cool story-wise but suck butts mechanically, kurt's balls suck, and Going Somewhere Else being one of the primary points brings up about the Johto games is in fact a negative
I also just like. Don't like any of the Gen II gym leaders? It feels like they somehow have even less personality than the already-low amount leaders get to work with, and their designs are boring too. Jasmine is the only one I can remember on her own merits (Faulkner I remember bc Faulkner is a cool-ass name befitting its bearer).
I'll admit nostalgia plays a factor in it being a favorite, but it also introduced some of the best concepts that carry on to this day. Breeding/Eggs, alternative evolution paths beyond leveling/stones, adding the hands down two best Eeveeloutions, adding extra balls (and I loved Kurt's balls, it was a fun mechanics), freakin' Shinies! There's lots to love there and it really blew my mind as kid when I realized how many gyms there were. Plus the designs are really great for pretty much all the Pokemon. The first 3 generations just had a lot of charm to the art style and I kinda always felt 4 is where it started to fall off a bit. Not to say those middle gen games were all bad, but I don't find myself wanting to revisit them very much.
I don't like any of the Gen 2 starters. I always go for Totodile because in my opinion he sucks the least. But they all suck. Especially Cyndaquil. What an ugly looking rat thing.
But every generation does have some redeemable stuff in it. The dogs are definitely cooler than the bird trio. And I love Ho-oh and Lugia, and the legend of the bell tower and all that stuff is actually really good mythology for this series. Some of the better mythology actually.

Dang what, the Johto starters are my favorite trio. Chikorita et all are adorable blobs, Totodile is a cutie that evolves into probably the coolest of the edgy Pokemon designs, and Quilava is in my top 10 overall (Typhlosion is pretty cool too).

YOU TAKE THAT BACK!
What did that poor adorable baby do to you?
Joking aside Cyndaquil is probably my favorite starter EVER. But that's also the one generation I never actually played so I have never used one before. I would love to have one available in a game game early so I could make use of one though. It's just so dang cute and it turns into to a fire a weasel. The best.
The 2nd gen starters are good designwise, though they don't hold up as well nowadays. Typhlosion and Meganium have really limited movesets and Feraligatr has a weird stat distribution. The single typings aren't great either, with Feraligatr's mono-Water being the best at "okay."
All 3 could use a Mega or something to give them an extra kick.
And they highlighted both Eevee and the eevolutions on 7th gen, too. There's even a special sidequest about that in SM and USUM, and special Z-moves.
I didn't wanna start a gen-war, though. I just wanted the Let's Go series to become a thing, and not just stop at the first pair of games. And I have a bunch of gen2 mons in my cellphone I could transfer over, too.
The worst part about G/S is how grindy it gets around the 3rd gym. Since you can access certain areas (east of Ecruteak in particular) before you ever actually need to go there, the Pokemon are very low level and by the time you beat Cianwood's gym, there is nothing on the level of Jasmine to train against until you get to Mahogany town.
The set pieces of the story are by far the best in my opinion. I don't really care for how over the top things get from R/S and onwards (although I think R/S execute it pretty well anyway). Team Rocket's plans are much more grounded than the later teams and I like that. The "end of the world anime" angle is one I'm not very fond of in a setting that is much less fantasy than the premise initially lets on.
Plus, seeing how much things changed in Kanto was really interesting.
I wouldn't really classify the direction they went in Sun/Moon as "dialing it back." They dialed it sideways. Instead of the creation of the world, and keepers of time and space, they just took it to other dimensions and alternate realities and introduced basically a kid-friendly Lovecraftian cosmology into the franchise.
Actually, from what I’ve seen so far, I like the direction of Sword and Shield because it seems to be focused more around the political drama of the Pokémon league and the trainers involved, which is the ideal kind of Pokémon plot imo. Hopefully there isn’t some hidden inter-dimensional god Pokémon behind everything and it stays relatively grounded.

Freaky alien crap, but not really elder god horror level? Conceptually they don't rank on the level of Lovecraft stuff.

Johto is the worst region, but HGSS are the best games. So it is salvageable.

That is patently not true. Yes, evolution is its gimmick, but Eevee itself is massively popular.
