Something being undersold in Cloudeagle's comment is that the reviews go beyond saying it's "well made." I've seen quite a few perfect scores.
Oh yeah if you see the trailer and the short videos of the game in action it's very, very clear the game fucking nails it. Which is probably why the game is so damn powerful in it's emotions. I've always said that video games can provide an experience better than movies or books.
If you’ve read this far into the review looking for more details about just what this game is about, there’s a catch. Even though many of the game’s plot details were unexpectedly leaked via a hack in late April, a condition of us being able to review the game a week early with a Sony-provided copy is that we can’t spoil certain things.
Been reading a lot of the reviews. There seems to be universal praise for the gameplay but the reviews of the story and characterization are very mixed from outlet to outlet and there's gigantic story and character stuff past the point they're allowed to review for these week-early reviews. Both Polygon and Kotaku have scathing takes on the later.
Makes sense honestly. You can review a game and not spoil the whole dang thing.

I am playing through Remaster right now and god survival difficulty makes the infected really irritating to play against. Otherwise so far the game is considerably more violent than I remember, but oddly I don’t feel this games core combat mechanics stand up so well given how much games improved it since 2013.
Sounds like we're getting more Last of Us and I am all for that. Also, maybe the game fatigue people are experiencing is a result of the game length? Haven't read any reviews but it's meant to be quite a bit longer than the first one right?

I dunno if it's really more of it. Some of the best parts of Last of Us were when the combat and tension went away and you just sort of explored the ruins, and had Joel sort of dad it up and teach Ellie about stuff. This sounds way more bleak and nihilistic than that.

Not really an argument worth having with him again, honestly. He still believes we're completely forgetting everything about the first one and only remembering the sunshine and roses.

Can't have been me. Never would use the words "sunshine" or "roses" - definitely not in relation to TLoU.

I find most Polygon reviews to be anti-hype to sell a game that I'm interested in, no matter who the author if the article is.
But theres a part of the review that talks about a section with a dog, and then a flashback to the same dog and you can probably see where I'm going with this based on what had been discussed about the game already and I'm personally happy to never play this game ever, even though I really liked the first TLoU.
Did hard impacting, exhausting moments like that really NEED to be included in a game? Probably. Eventually. I don't think they planned for something so dark to coincide with the worst year since the current century started. It's just too much.
Pushing the envelope is how we get games to cover a wider variety of topics, and desensitize the audience to go further beyond, but something about that specific gameplay moment as described alone is not a direction I want to expand and see happen in more games.
I know I'm intensely curious if/how *gestures at the state of the world* affects this game's sales. Especially since Sony's been pretty direct about this being the most grim and violent thing ever since moment one.

At least in Europe, the demand has already outstripped that of Spiderman pre-launch. There's no way this thing isn't going to sell gangbusters.
I just picked up Wartile after stumbling across it in the store, and being immediately taken in by the art style. Actually, I’m surprised that I hadn’t already heard of this game, since the trailer seems like the sort of thing that would generate some buzz around a title. Neat strategy game, if a little light on explanation of the systems. I’m enjoying customizing my little Viking warrior figurines, and getting a feel for the combat.

So I've just agreed to hold off on playing TLoU2 until the first weekend in July, when my best mate can come visit and we can play through as much as we can in a weekend the way we did the first one many moons ago.
It's not like I'm short on other games to play, but this may still not be easy.

I'm torn on TLOU2. Naughty Dog is probably my favourite developer going right now in terms of consistent quality, and I loved TLOU1, and I was super hyped when the first trailer for 2 came out, but... man.
I can't even really replay TLOU1 because knowing what's coming makes me nope out of certain parts. I've had a playthrough stuck at Winter for like 2 years. So maybe going in blind on TLOU2 will be easier but until the world sorts its shit out I kind of need something mindless.
Last of Us 2 will undoubtedly sell well but it’ll probably suffer a bit for being the wrong game at the wrong time.
There are certain things I won’t watch or play because they’re just too dour. I don’t think I’ll ever want to watch Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead because I know how brutal they are to the characters.
Of course I say that at a time when I’m playing a ton of Mortal Kombat 11.

I'm waiting for PS5 to get any new games anyway. Anything I get for the PS4 has to be heavily discounted for me to consider it. I've basically been 2 years behind everyone in terms of console games for the past 2 generations, and it's worked out pretty well for me.
Destiny 2 season of the arrivals main questline - maybe another 12 hours of AFK farming and then 2-4 hours of actual gameplay
the single-player campaign of CoD:WW2 - free this month, I detest CoD style PvP so I suspect only a handfull of hours in the campaign
Horizon: Zero Dawn - somehwo never played and my Lovely Partner just started over the weekend and has been so completely sucked in that I can't not play it now.
TLoU2 - maybe it will be on sale by the time I get here?

MK11 is fake, over the top violence.
I agree with you on TWD. I watched up to a certain point when some survivors took people hostage and kneeled them over a pig pen and slit their throats. I think they ended up eating humans or something. I can deal with zombies doing the biting but watching the humans do it just brings the wrong emotions.

Important to note that the violence in the TLoU is fake also.
I'm actually not sure I get the distinction being made tbh. While TLoU isn't likely going to feature a skeleton that breathes fire the fact remains that they both feature stories with fully realized characters having awful things done to them rendered in disturbingly accurate ways.

I never watched Game of Thrones because I dug the books and I wanted to see how the story played out there before watching the adaptation.
Given how badly the last season was my stance went from pedantically silly to a good call.

As a book reader: Mostly decent adaption for the first three seasons, albeit simplified and condensed, outside some very questionable 'Why would you cut this!?' cuts. Then it starts going off the rails hard in the 4th season not just condensing and cutting plotlines anymore but outright rewriting tons of them to be horribly worse. Then by the time you get to season 7 it's a flaming trash fire. And then season 8 throws napalm on that trash fire.

Woah wait. The violence in TLoU is fake!? Oh man I thought it was real! :P
There's 100% difference between how it's portrayed in MK11 and TLoU2. You don't hear anyone claiming that "MK11 is exhausting, depressing, dark, etc".
It's not necessarily the violence that makes TLoU exhausting and depressing though either.
And there are plenty of people that avoid MK specifically because of the violence.
I think graphic violence being depicted in stunning fidelity is equally triggering to some folks regardless of the setting.

That's fair. I was just pointing out why MK11 is different from TLoU in RidleySaria's post since they mentioned that it felt weird to them that they are enjoying MK11.

It’s unfortunate timing, definitely.

LMAO. They ALMOST made it to the end without showing off some heaving breasts.
It seems to be a mix of visual novel and some kind of top down tower defense combat.
I hope the gameplay doesn't totally repel me, because I really want to play it for the story.

Zombieland? The survivors grow to love each other and are threatened by zombies, not hostile survivors.
