Yeah, but they could be worked on - or was word from the mothership a NEVER AGAIN thing?

Reality got reworked with the Mending so you had to have a spark to survive the passage. The Planar Bridge was a big deal even with severe limitations and would have been nothing special prior to Time Spiral.

Pre mending a planeswalker could just grab somebody and planeswalk with them.

Now mind, you had to be pretty sturdy to not die since it essentially was the magicy equivalent of being exposed to space for like a minute, but doable.

Urza brought a phrexian enhanced (pre-oil shenanigans) lady with him around the multiverse for like, 3000 years.

Kaya can still do this (one of the non-problematic revelations in Forsaken) but it's... not fun... for neither her nor her passenger.

There's black things in the air

    I must be dreaming
Wake up, Ash, this isn't fair
    What's this?

    What's this? What's this?
    There's something very cute
    What's this?
    There's praetors birthing newts
    What's this?
    The streets are lined with
    Phyrexian exarchs
    Everybody seems so spooky
    Have I possibly gone daffy?
What is this? What is this?

    There are demons throwing gremlins
    Instead of throwing balls
    They're busy compleating
    And absolutely all are thralls
    There's oil on every surface
Oh, I can't believe my eyes
And in my bones I feel the warmth
    That's coming from inside

    Oh, look
    What's this?
They're hanging their scriptures, and kill
Why that looks so unique, inspired!
They're gathering around to hear a story
    Roasting humans on a fire
    What's this?

    What's this?
In here they've got a little sphere, how queer
    And who would ever think
    And why?
They're covering it with tiny little things
They've got electric lights on strings
And there's a smile on everyone
So, now, correct me if I'm wrong
    This looks like fun
    This looks like fun
Oh, could it be I got my wish?
    What's this?

    Oh my, what now?
    The demons are asleep
    But look, there's nothing underneath
No ghouls, no witches here to scream and scare them
Or ensnare them, only little cozy things
    Secure inside their dreamland
    What's this?

    The monsters are all hissing
And the nightmares can be found
And along them there seems to be
    Compleation all around
    Instead of screams, I swear
I can hear music in the air
The smell of spleens and blood
    Are absolutely everywhere

    The sights, the sounds
    They're everywhere and all around
I've never felt so good before
This empty place inside of me is filling up
    I simply cannot get enough
I want it, oh, I want it
Oh, I want it for my own
    I've got to know
    I've got to know
What is this place that I have found?
    What is this?

Oko isn't seeing play in Vintage/Legacy I suppose?

Vintage wouldn't surprise me, but Legacy seems like it'd maybe have a spot for him.

Oko is pretty dominant in legacy atm. I had a kind of rough time dealing with them playing the current grixis delver configurations in an event this weekend overrun with the bant snow miracles and and snowblade decks all with okos and even from a BUG delver player. There's a lot of oko. It's really changed the fundamental nature of how to handle the format, small example as a delver deck I could no longer cut forces post board in those fair Grindy matchups because oko has dramatically upped the threat density and number of must answer cards from those decks.

Honestly there's just a lot of 2019 in legacy going on right now and it sucks because 2019 magic design was messed up.

The Eternals are not organic, they're made out of that weird made-up element, not carbon.

Not that that actually matters, since it functions exactly the same as silver, it seems, since that's supposed to be the only nonliving material that can make the transition.

The Eternals were coated in lazotep, not made out of it. They're zombies, not golems.

That's a game changer. Lazotep suits? Lazotep vehicles? Lazotep eyedroppers? As long as you have a bridge, you can send anything across planes now.

Nope. Huatli recently tried planeswalking with a bag full of objects, and everything she brought with her was fine except for the loaf of bread, which had disintegrated into dust. A loaf of bread is every bit as dead as a zombie.

Bolas discovered that lazotep can shield organic material from the Blind Eternities. In fact, I think the abundance of lazotep was the whole reason why he chose to set up his Eternal factory on Amonkhet, when he could have theoretically done it anywhere.

Phyrexian oil usually isn't all that big a deal - Dominaria's got a bunch of it in the areas of Urborg, for instance, and it mostly just fouls up the area and leads to some zombies and general evil.

The issue with Mirrodin was that the glistening oil is very good at corrupting metal - and Mirrodin is almost nothing but, with its more organic inhabitants eventually being corrupted via their metal bits as well.

A drop of oil wouldn't have been a massive problem on any other plane, but Mirrodin was the perfect storm. (In fact, that's why WotC made it like that. They were planning New Phyrexia back in the original Mirrodin block, after all.)

Yeah, but one, they just did so we got at least twelve sets of everything going the villains' way to go befoore they win again, and two, Phyrexia is never going to get "obliterated". Phyrexia will, at most, be beaten back after much effort and sacrifice and stuff and a minimum of one Deus Ex Machina. Not to derail the conversation but I just need to get this out into the void early. WotC wanted to push sacrifice decks and they got to good enough with Eldraine. Still being pushed in Theros though. So, big call time, sacrifice decks will become dominate in Theros Standard and cards will start getting banned. Heard it here first folks.

Return to New Phyrexia is probably going to be BR Mirrans vs. WUG Phyrexians, which would be a pretty interesting take on things. Maybe BRG, if Melira's still relevant. (Elesh Norn supposedly crushed Urabrask and Sheoldred's forces, which definitely isn't a setup for opening up space for a rebel faction no sirree.)

Also, Koth! I guess the lineup would be red Koth, white Elspeth, BU Ashiok and Tezzeret, maybe WG Calix if they stretch that story out far enough? Maybe Tezzeret isn't showing up after all, if Ashiok's going there.

Wizards of the Coast staff like to joke that this is the reason why planeswalkers have slightly different outfits every time they appear. :D

There actually is a canon explanation for this, but it was so long ago that I can't quite remember it. I think the rule is that planeswalkers can extend their spark's protection to a small amount of organic material if they subconsciously think of it as being an extension of their body.

I was under the impression that the glistening oil that remains on Dominaria had all been rendered inert by the legacy weapon. It's just harmless black goop now.

You're absolutely right that the infection spreads much faster on technologically advanced worlds than it does on mostly natural ones, though. The oil tries to make everything it touches partly organic and partly artificial, so purely natural worlds are missing half of what it needs to operate at peak efficiency.

Alara and Kaladesh had better watch out.
