RTW WMP and Vista = no luck?

I installed Vista on the new computer I built which sometimes causes problems. The current one is Rome Total War refuses to get past the splash screen. Some research leads me to suspect that the problem involves WMP and probably codecs. It would be great if someone knows the exact solution for this but if anyone can share general info on WMP 11 and codecs that might go a long way to helping me out as well.

So this didn't seem to help and it stopped mpegs from running. Bah, this codec stuff always defeats me.
