I admit, I am intrigued by what is apparently an impossibly good movie from the distant future.

In the year 9999, 13/5 is basically equivalent to a game getting 70 out of 100 ten years ago. Grade inflation, man...

Just saw Ready or Not, and it's only not the best horror movie I've seen this year because I just watched You're Next.

It wasn't as comedic as it suggested, but when it decided to go for funny it was really fucking funny, so it's all good.

Samara Weaving is a raw charisma machine and I loved her from the opening scene. Her reactions and delivery were just perfect throughout.
    "FUCKING RICH PEOPLE"

And yeah, the ending was glorious. I wish I'd caught this in theaters, but whatevs. I'll probably end up buying it.

Yeah, I mean I ding it for the tone of the movie (arguably) not matching the tone of the trailer, but setting that aside yeah I can recommend it without reservation. Everybody should check out Ready or Not. It has crossbows.

I also agree that Weaving was absolutely solid and charming, enough so that I decided to go check out The Babysitter afterward. That was...less good. Though she was still good in it!

The Babysitter was enjoyable but kind of low rent. Weaving was the best part by a wide margin. Not a bad way to knock back 90 minutes if you're in the mood for some horror comedy.

I have to say I disliked how it dealt with the
female servants. From what we see, they don't seem to be particularly complicit, yet their deaths are more gruesome and played for laughs¨* at least as much than the deaths of the actual family members. This does highlight just how callous the Le Domas family is, but the film does assume their callousness a tad too much for my tastes.

*Excluding the dumbwaiter death, but that one also felt oddly moralistic - she's given up our heroine, so she gets to be punished by dying in a nasty way. Never mind that she is scared for her life and didn't ask to end up in this situation, so her fearful reaction is at least understandable.

My favourite part of that movie was the jock guy. Absolute psyco, but also friendly and charming. Like you could see him as a popular person that people wouldn't never suspect being capable of doing bad things.

I followed up Ready Or Not with Mayhem because Samara Weaving is delightful. She was, as expected, still delightful.

It sounds like it's going to be a simple virus- based zombie flick, but it's actually a little more interesting, since those infected aren't mindless; they just have dramatically lowered inhibitions. A good person might just become a violent asshole, but an asshole might become actively murderous. And the infected are basically all ruthless lawyers, sooooo.

Steven Yeun is the lead, and he's a pretty effective likeable action protagonist. Weaving is, as usual, effortlessly charismatic and convincingly badass. Best line:
YOU OPEN DOORS LIKE MY GRANDMOTHER FUCKS

It's a short, fleet, brutal little movie that doesn't really go anywhere unexpected once it sets up its premise, but it's well filmed and a lot of fun.

Samara Weaving, though, is now three for three in horror comedies, and please cast her in everything going forward, thank you.

The Icelandic drama A White, White Day isn't a great film, it's too much of a story that we've seen before for that: it's about a man so used to repressing his own emotions that his wife's death (suicide?) and his suspicions that she may have had an affair throw him completely, as the repressed emotions burst out in ways that become dangerous to the people around him. However, it's beautifully filmed, highly atmospheric and centres on great performances by Ingvar Sigurdsson and Ída Mekkín Hlynsdóttir, who play the protagonist Ingimundur and his eight-year-old granddaughter Salka, added to which it's got a beautifully laconic sense of humour. I don't think it's a must-see, but for me it was a good introduction to Icelandic cinema.

Up next week: Echo, another Icelandic film. Seems like films from Iceland are like buses...

The visual effects industry needs to unionize yesterday. Sounds like this was more the effects studio looking to save a few bucks (only that branch closed), but the industry does themselves no favours when it comes to bidding and tend to shoot themselves in the dick more often than not.

Also doesn't help that CGI is still viewed by many as something disposable and not "art".

6 Underground is Leverage meets The A-Team through the lens of Michael Bay. It's not bad. The action is competent, the car chases are good. Ryan Reynolds feels a little more constrained than usual but that seems to be due to the implied character arc. Also apparently they intend to make 9 of these, judging by an early plot device.

I enjoyed this, a little too much monster closet in some of the set pieces and some clunky dialogue but overall fun.

It's an ok watch, it's not good enough to watch more than once.
It was weird to make Reynolds character a billionaire and his trauma seems to be that he fell in love with an insanely gorgeous woman with rock hard abs. Woe is me. He seemed surprised she had a kid so it's not like he knew she was pregnant either. He should have been ex black ops who stole a big secret fund. At least that would explain how he knows CQC and tactics in general. His background is he's just a science nerd it makes no sense. I know that's asking a lot for a Michael Bay movie but still.

Kinda. I guess. Has lots of gadgets and the like too.

    Also it's filled with goofs
and I'm not normally the kind of person to notice them. But the dead guy on the boat stabbed to the table literally opens his eyes with the camera framed on him, it shows Reynolds sticking his head outof the car at the start only to then show the exterior of the car with the windows all closed for a loooong shot only to switch back to Reynolds with his head out of the car, and...

I thought the movie was pretty clear that his trauma was from watching kids get gassed in front of him while he was trying to help the world as a billionaire.

They tried to cover his combat skills with the lines about spending time playing with special forces but it's not great cover. Though making him ex black ops who was also a tech and magnet genius would have been worse. They should have just treated him and 5 pretty much the same. Tone him down some and give her more to do during the missions

    He didn't need
to be a tech genius, he's just ex black ops, stole the slush fund and a bunch of gadgets. He doesn't need to be a genius to know how to use magnets. I wouldn't question Ethan Hunt pulling off that same magnet stunt.

I forgot about the gassing thing tbh but that also happens BEFORE he meets that woman. So for some reason he meets with her, has a relationship, then decides to off himself while managing to transfer a bunch of money to an account he can use and also track specialist people across the world. At least if he was an ex spy it'd explain him finding these people.

Why he has combat training is going to be a later part of his arc. They're going for the shadowy "there's more to him than just magnet nerd" angle. I wouldn't be surprised if somehow he was personally or business-ly connected to all 9 of the guys he's decided to take out and that becomes a point of conflict within the team later on. Also he met the woman because of the gassing really, he was at the opera to mad mug the generic 'stan dictator and she just happened to be the bartender. That was 3-4 years before present day in the movie if I remember right. He only faked his death 6 months to a year before the movie present, meaning he was out of the girl's life almost as soon as he was in it considering his surprise at having a 3ish year old son. So it goes, witnesses the gassing, decides to be billionaire vigilante, meets girl, knocks up girl, leaves girl for whatever reason, [future plot point mercenary-type training to be revealed later], fakes death, assembles team [3 of the other 5 team member backstories still to be revealed (we don't know 2, 3 and 5, and technically don't know 6 but he's dead)], present day.

Also I only noticed a single juvenile Michael Bay-ism the whole movie.
When they're in the kitchen, and Reynolds activates the magnet, a guy is pinned to the wall then a colander nails him in the balls and two lime "testicles" go flying out.

Bay honestly seemed kind of... restrained? For Michael Bay at least. I just watched Bad Boys and Bad Boys II with my wife because she'd never seen them, and compared to them 6 Underground was downright reserved.

I just came back from seeing Knives Out. Been going through a phase recently and this movie was just the thing I needed. Great movie. Ana de Armas was the cutest. Like she was a personification of a Hello Kitty sweater worn by a kitten sleeping atop of a Golden Retriver thats chilling in a basket in front of roaring fire place. I mean everybody else was good too, especially Christopher Plummer(man is a treasure), but she stod out to me. Considering I have only seen her in Blade Runner 2049, it was a change of pace.
