His take on Outer Wilds is just...bad. It oozes with charm. I think he was trying to make a roast joke at the expense of Giant Bomb, but as someone who just completed Outer Wilds it misses pretty hard.
Alternatively I’ve played outer wilds for 5 hours, done nothing but spin my wheels despite desperately trying to get into the game, and sort of hate it now.

Sounds like the classic Jeff Gerstmann experience.
Yeah, the discussions have been good and its been entertaining as I make my way through day four, but I've also got to pour one out for Most Disappointing, Please Stop, and Worst Game all being absent.

Outer Wilds didn't even rise to my attention for some reason. It was always the other Outer something game. I do agree with their assessment of Outer Worlds, it was intensely fun for the first part then just cratered for me. I haven't forced myself to go back and finish it. Wilds is free via gamepass, so I can always have a look. I'm...maybe a confused that Resident Evil 2 can make the top 10; it's not new it's just gussied up for the modern age. Ultimately, it doesn't matter, but it does feel odd and not good odd.

This argument comes up from time to time for GOTY stuff in general this year and I feel like its severely understating the amount of work they did. It plays completely differently than the original game did. The enemies are completely redesigned for this to work that way. The Police station, while having some major areas that look pretty similar, has also been redesigned to change how the players interact with it in substantial ways. And all of the rest of the areas are the same pretty much in name only.
Yeah I see it the same as like a movie remake versus just an enhanced re-release or something. A re-release wouldn't (and shouldn't) get an Oscar nomination, but if it's been completely reshot with a new cast and new style, that's a new movie even if it follows the same basic story. RE2 is a total remake, not just a re-release or remaster.
I miss the categories that were not in the talks this year. Props to them trying a different format but was more of a fan of the previous last couple of years.
Also I miss hitmas. Still I enjoyed the content over the Xmas period regardless.
I love that #10 again continues the proud tradition of being someone's passion argument
That was numbers 9 and 10 this year and I might be one of the few who doesn't care for the trend Mr Walker started. Everyone else just kind of relents to whoever wants to do a filibuster and its just not as much fun as all the arguing and bargaining.

Austin came with passion and a good story. It convinced me to play Invisible Inc., and I had a good enough time with it that I saw what he loved.
I haven’t listened to this years yet, but I think there’s a difference between straight filibustering and bringing a convincing, persuasive narrative that can sway even people who didn’t play the game. Austin didn’t seem stubborn, just like he wanted to share a really cool thing.
Yeah, I don't think they filibustered this year. They were very passionate about their games and made a good case for why they should be there. Maybe not as well as Austin did, but to be fair, Austin is Austin.
Also, I don't mind it that much because sometimes, only one person really gets the chance to play the game in-depth, if at all? Like Alex was able to get Judgement on the top 10 list in large part due to his pitch in the best story category really interesting and pulling in other people on the staff. Sometimes a gem of a game only really gets the chance to be touched upon by one person on the staff. I don't think a game should be disqualified due to that.

I don't know why you put the blame on Austin for that one. Destiny was a 2014 game, before Austin was even at Giant Bomb.
Blame Brad on the GOTY filibustering. He was just stubborn without substance in his defense of his darlings. Austin at least defended with passion and coherent argument to sway others to his point of view.
Black lives matter.

Well, I think coming with prepared material is lame too. Everyone else making their arguments on the fly and then one person who just can't stand to see their game not making it bringing out the equivalent of a cheat sheet always struck me as bullshit.
Which is why I would pin this specific form of grandstanding on Austin and not Brad (as bad as that clinging to Destiny was).

Not everyone can speak passionately about an in-depth topic off the dome like Austin. Notes somehow make your argument less impactful? Because that’s like cheating? I don’t get it. Should public speakers never be allowed to have a written speech? Should I not be allowed to bring notes to a meeting where I will let my stupid mouth get ahead of my stupid brain because I forget two of the six points I needed to make?
It feels like everyone should do that or no one should. And everyone sitting around and reading prepared statements about things they refuse to budge on sounds fucking boring as hell. These debates are at their best when they aren't being taken as seriously as all of us in the peanut gallery take them. Jeffs quips and improvised shenanigans will always be a highlight of these over the more drawn out rants that can occur. The Death Stranding one was great though since more people were jumping in and out of that and it wasn't just one person declaring they would take their metaphorical ball and go home if decisions made were not to their liking.
It can feel too much like an electoral college superceding the popular vote kind of scenario at times with that number 10 spot now.

Might as well just take their individual ordered lists, score them, and then add it up to award GOTY. Who needs passionate conversation to get something on the list?
Speaking of which, has anyone talked about the PA Forums GOTY poll around here? Haven’t seen a thread about it.

They usually start taking nominations in January once the year is officially over.

If I wanted to have even mildly substantial things to say about a volume of videogames equivalent to the amount Giant Bomb plays, I would sure as shit written an exercise books worth of notes
And I'd rather give them the chance to put their best foot forward about their most loved games, as opposed to them waffling semi aimlessly. It's not like they're using props or anything

Not long ago we were complaining about Dan just screaming "jesus christ Death Stranding fucking sucks."
Hey man, why the decision to keep this new format for GOTY? No offense, just not a huge fan of it. Loved the old way with more categories. I feel like the first three days now are just re listening to the games section of both podcasts that i've heard from the last year and we lose the fun categories that led to some great moments. Still a fan either way just wanted to know the reason behind the decision. Thanks.
Jeff "Jeff Gerstmann" Gerstmann answered:
Mostly because we like it and think it’s a better representation of our year with video games. It helps focus the conversation and gives us time to actually talk about the games instead of just jamming in all the little “let’s talk about this game before we cut it” things into the old format. Once I realized that the games we were cutting were leading to more interesting and passionate discussion than the categories it was a pretty easy change to make.
Also? The old format was done. Not interested in building more content specifically around who can argue the loudest, even if the answer, more often than not, was me. So we keep some elements of that in that the end for people who like that and because I still think trying to build a ranked list is ridiculous and sorta fun, but we don’t have to build five days around it. It feels way better.

Any format that limits Brad’s obnoxious behavior is a winner in my book.

Does it actually? They had it last year and it was perhaps the most obnoxious year ever with RDR2.
I honestly don’t remember the specifics, but I was prepared for RDR2 to be a knock down, drag out fight, given Dan’s heel turn on the game. This years Day 5 was locked at 2.5 hours and even though I’m still working through it length alone indicates to me that Brad’s bullshit isn’t as bad as usual, since he’s the one who makes everything long and unbearable.

it sucks that we're not even getting a list write up for any category at all.
