Any reason there's no written recap for this year's goty awards? Gotta say, it's something I miss.
Jeff "Geff Jerstmann" Gerstmann answered:
The original plan was for something short to run today, but it’s hit a snag due to some bad travel schedules. Might still hit later today, might not hit until tomorrow.
i really wish they'd toss the podcasts at this point, maybe just do the first 3 days if they love that format or whatever. but the lack of enjoyable cross coast video content has been brutal compared to previous years, i'd toss out thursday and friday podcasts if it meant 4 more videos ran during the week.
Any format that limits Brad’s obnoxious behavior is a winner in my book.
Does it actually? They had it last year and it was perhaps the most obnoxious year ever with RDR2.
I honestly don’t remember the specifics, but I was prepared for RDR2 to be a knock down, drag out fight, given Dan’s heel turn on the game. This years Day 5 was locked at 2.5 hours and even though I’m still working through it length alone indicates to me that Brad’s bullshit isn’t as bad as usual, since he’s the one who makes everything long and unbearable.
I think it's more that he just didn't have a game this year to really dig in on.
Brad seemed more open to seeing he when he had little to no support for his opinions and letting things slide after throwing a "you're all insane" jab their way.

I think it's generally been a more agreeable year across the board on what the crew felt were good games, and it was less about arguing what goes on the list/what gets taken out, and more the specific ordering of things

they consistently mention that the podcasts are far and away the most popular thing that they make, so those aren't going away anytime soon

I like it. I wouldn't even mind it if they just had the three days of discussion podcasts, because all I really want to hear is people talking about the games they love. Having to place games above others doesn't really satisfy anyone except the internet's insatiable need for lists.

Yea this has easily been my favorite year for the GOTY podcasts. I do miss the videos though. It was nice though that the East Coast Crew didn't have to spend nearly as much time away though. I've traveled for work and it's no fun, especially if you're gone for multiple weeks. It also sounds like pretty much everyone got sick at one point or another.
Based on the conversations both podcasts had after the goty stuff was recorded.m, but before they were released, I really think that things outside of their control conspired to keep them from having more than a week this year. They knew it was short, and wanted to do more, and on top of that a lot of technical shit seemed to break on Jan and Jason.
I’m hoping it’s more of a return to the previous norms next year.
It doesn't help that Thanksgiving was so late, and then Christmas and New Years fell on consecutive Tuesdays. Jan implied in the comments that he's been dealing with a time crunch and also many technical issues. Also with Jason out sick, Jan is running that place by himself.

The only thing I didn't like was missing out on some of the more light-hearted categories like "please stop", which if there was a time issue is perfectly understandable.
I like the format of them going through every game and talking about them, I just miss the categories like Please Stop and Check Yourself Before Your Riggedy-Wreck Yourself, and the videos. I'll always miss the skits they used to do, but I understand they don't have the time to do them anymore, but not having really anything this year, even the entire company play sessions, really sucked.
Man, I know I'm like a weekend late, but this paranormal transit authority thing they did on the Beastcast with Austin is great. It's like, peak collaborative storytelling.

The format has 2 things:
1 - it sucks for weekly listeners of the beastcast/bombcast becuase it's literally 9+ hours of hearing the same discussion I've already heard this year
2 - it's better for the people who actually work at giantbomb
After it taking me a few days to get through day one, I looked at the lists someone on the GB forums made of timestamps for the daily podcasts and just went and listened to the segments for games I was interested in. Somewhere between day two and three I just stopped listening to them altogether and just went straight for the top ten one from Friday. Otherwise it would have taken me weeks to get through everything and even now I really don't want to listen to any more game of the year, decade, platform, etc until next December.
I like the GOTY podcasts because it gives them time to talk about games they didn't talk about during the year, or dive deep into spoiler territory on those games they mentioned briefly throughout the year. Like, they talked about Death Stranding, but they absolutely did not talk about the bananas plot and bad writing in specifics until GOTY.
Saying it's the same discussions from throughout the year is just incorrect, because it's not.
Yea considering the majority of the games mentioned only have 2 people on average who played them in depth - this format really gave a better impression of what each game was

Oh also I am ultra upset that that brief interest-check twitter exchange Alex had with Ikumi Nakamura towards the end of the year did not result in anything coming to fruition

I listen to just about every Bomcast/Beastcast and the amount of praise for Outer Wilds during GOTY caught me by surprise.
I think I'm a fan of the newer format.
I think a lot of the crew only played it around GOTY time, and ended up saving their thoughts for just those podcasts. I think Vinny may be the only one who played it when it came out, even.

Was very surprised Control didn’t get more accolades, the way they praised it. They must have really liked Outer Wilds. I’m looking forward to Control though, I’ll pick it up during the next sale after I finish Fallen Order.
I like FO a lot and honestly if it weren’t for the technical issues I think I would have deserved a place on the list. It’s made well, the characters are likeable, and I think it does the Metroid thing really well.

I mean, it was their 2nd best game of the year. That's a pretty high accolade.
i think if they had a similar number of categories/etc to past years Control would have won a lot of them. Honestly I like talking about every game but it really doesn’t feel like they produced very much content in total for this year.

I thought they weren’t ranking the bottom 9 anymore? I just gave up on trying to listen to all the podcasts so I read the recap.
