I know you guys love to hear about my all too exciting experience with slower-than-dirt-running-uphill internet speeds. So here's a little story to make you warm inside when you think about your own personal not-as-terrible-as-mine ISP:

So, for those of you new to this, my internet speeds top out at about .75Mb/s. And for further clarity, the lower case 'b' means bit. Not byte. So over the course of a minute, I can download a whopping ~6MB. 1GB of data is a little over three hours. Every month I have an option to triple my speed and every month they are 'unable to process the transaction'. So, yeah.

Anyway, some may recall back in May that EA/Origin was giving away Sims 4. I have been, periodically since then, been downloading it in pieces. Since I'm generally using my bandwidth for other things this comes out to about two or three days a month generally whilst at work (8-10 hours). Through this morning, that meant about 50-60% download.

The fun part is at the end of the month. When the internet is 'cut off' because the month is up (I must 'sign in' once a month to keep using it and that's all I have to say about that.) there is a brief moment when I get access to what is apparently the full, possible speed where I live. Approximately 5MB/s. Yep. And then after a period of time, access is terminated and I must sign back in.

Having nothing particularly better to do, and this being the last day of the 'month', I figured I let the game download and try and get a boost when it kicked in. About an hour ago is when it happened and while I wasn't paying strict attention, it basically shot up from 71% when I first noticed the speed boost to 86% completed.

Anybody who might have taken a look at my games played and maybe wonder why they're mostly small or older games? That's why. I simply cannot see trying to download blu-ray disc sized or greater games at .75Mb/s. I have better porn things porn to do with my bandwidth than to wait for a game to play.

I gotta get out of this place!

USB drive and work internet if you have the option.

I'm just going on 1 year since I moved from similar internet speeds. I'd take a 500gb USB drive to work and download the games there. I had pretty much any game I was thinking I might play in the next year installed on a secondary 2tb drive.

Add USB drive as steam library location at work.
    Install to USB drive.
At home, add USB as library location, Steam will see games.
Check the properties for the game, local files tab, then change the location of the install.

I do not have that option. I work as a field tech for a geotech company. I'd think about actually using my phone to download stuff. But...Verizon. (There is a reason 2600 registered a bunch of different 'verizonsucks.com' URLs twenty plus years ago.)

I'm sure you thought of all this, but have you tried getting a laptop or mobile setup so you can use say Starbucks or McDonald's wifi to download games at least marginally faster?

Never thought of that. But probably because that thought would have to come after. 'Do I have enough money to make it to next week?' and 'When will I save enough money to move into a proper residence?'

Truthfully, all I really want is a stable connection so my 360 using Internet Connection Sharing stays online so I can play games I've neglected for far to long because I have a stupid mental condition where I get annoyed that unlocked achievements might not have a time/date stamp. (I have disconnected, resynched my profile, and unlocked it again just be ause I am that crazy about it.)

The slightly faster speed I'm not allowed to purchase had probably enough bandwidth to allow that. Now I can expect to be dropped on average every five minutes whilst playing. Hence my forum location.

    My situation is...unfortunate.

I don't really play games anymore, and I haven't been in the Steam thread for I think years now, but I thought I'd pop back in because something momentous just happened. I finally bought the game that had been on my wishlist the longest: The Talos Principle, which I added in 2014. Why did I buy it even though I don't play games anymore? Well, I've lived in India for a while, and between regional pricing and the sale, it was about a buck and a half, and I figured it's never going to dip lower, so if I ever play games again I might as well have it in my library. I think during at least five or six sales it's been equally discounted but I finally pulled the trigger.

The oldest game on my wishlist is now Valkyria Chronicles, added in 2015. I still mourn the loss of what used to be the oldest, added in like, 2011 or 2012 or something ludicrous like that, which was an early entry for Company of Heroes 2 which was later abandoned and replaced by a new entry for the game, but the earlier entry was forgotten so it stayed on my wishlist for many years until one day sadly disappearing.

I also went through a Marie Kondo "does it spark joy" wishlist pruning and brought it down from 114 items to a lean, mean 108 items (lots of things spark joy). At this rate it'll only take about 4 decades to buy everything on the list, assuming I don't add anything, although I added 32 things in 2019 so that may be an unlikely assumption.

    New Colossus.

Youngblood's claim to fame is cooperative focus and so you'll always have at least a bot on your side but a lot of the missions take place on the same maps and you need to be high enough level to progress the story. It's more casual, and it's fun to see/play the Terror Twins, but if you're going to choose one I'd go with big daddy BJ.

Can grab Youngblood another time on a deeper sale.

Kind of tired of porn games being advertised to me on Steam, never even played one but they still crop up. Its been an ongoing problem, one I thought I fixed at some point earlier.

I loved Stardew Valley and Craft the World, but I've bounced off of the other two or three games that are "like it" that I've tried. My Time in Portia, Yonder, and the one with 2d graphics on the alien planet that let you splice plants were all returned or else I quickly stopped them because they weren't fun for me. I really need to pin down exactly WHAT it is about some of these games that I can just sink into and love and what immediately turns me off. Might be the super cutesy angle (though I'm fine with that in other games). Kinda weird.

TLDR: I'm looking for more games like Stardew Valley.

    Verdant Skies!

Thats another one on the to do list.

Its going to be hard to find something that scratches the itch as well as Stardew Valley though. That game has really mastered the addictive loop and does a good job of not having the days become too repetitive feeling which is a problem with some other games like this.

Slime rancher is not quite the same as Stardew Valley, but it does scratch some of the same itches. I enjoyed it more than Portia.
