Did a bit of Christmas shopping today and realized that only one of the places I tend to frequent plays music at all and it wasn't holiday music yet, despite Christmas having taken a giant dump all over the store otherwise.

In fact I mostly only remember stores with music mostly at the mall, which I very very rarely go to.

I could have sworn it was more ubiquitous. Maybe I'm just not trendy enough nor counter enough.

I have survived several public spaces so far, including a restaurant that played literally nothing but Christmas music for the entirety of our meal.
Not sure if my "I'm in" was registered before the start of the contest, but I decided to still play, in my heart, partly just to see how long I can go without hearing this damn song.

My favorite part of this game is the increased awareness you get about how many places in the world have you, just, exposed to music. Passively, unconsciously consuming it.

It is illuminating.

Watched a YouTube video with a sudden deployment of a Christmas Carol and for the first time felt that cold sliver of panic. What if he does the drumboi.

But now I know what this is all about.

I got lucky, usually the second my Dad wakes up on Black Friday the Christmas songs are blasted (as the accompaniment to him and my Mom putting up decorations) until probably mid-January. This year he decided against it for whatever reason, so now I only have to worry about that when I visit at Christmas.

Though I suppose I could get nailed when I go grocery shopping. But hopefully not.

This is why I was so surprised that the only place that had music I went to today was a second hand store run by the Humane Society. People talk about dealing with music all the time, but outside of groceries I shop so infrequently (and never worked retail in a store with music) that I thought maybe I just filtered it out without thinking about it, and participating in this would change that. I'm still certain a toooon of mall stores play music but now I wonder if anywhere I actually intend to Christmas shop at this year actually has music or not.

When I was getting ready to drive home from work yesterday I was mulling over what I wanted to listen to. For some reason I landed on the seminal classic, Basshunter's DotA--but google took my request a little overzealously, choosing to play the entire contents of the album LOL that I'd never been exposed to before.

To make clear just how oblivious I am to this sort of thing, it was nearly halfway into their cover of a Christmas song that I noticed it was a Christmas song, and had a flash of panic. But no, it was actually Jingle Bells. I swear, I do not know what I would have done if Basshunter is what lost me this challenge.

Hmm I need a judgement. I was leaving a meeting at work today and passed by the work cafe which of course plays holiday music non-stop this time of year. As I was entering the nearby staircase I believe I heard the beginning of the first few bars of this song, it was orchestral so there were no words and I didn't stick around long enough to know 100% for sure if it was LDB, but it sounded similar.
