Shit like this is why I love Picard so much. Every episode is so packed with loving references to Trek history.

To be fair, Disaster had some ramifications going forward:

It was one of the things that made Troi want to become a commander, which is the start of her getting the spine she showed in Face of the Enemy
It continued Picard's arc of becoming more comfortable around/loving children (it takes place between Wesley's departure and The Inner Light)
Keiko finally pops in a great sequence with Worf

From a drama standpoint, Ro vs. Troi was interesting as they're two extremes, and it was nice that the woman - Beverley - was the one who was able to restore atmospheric conditions in the cargo bay.

I like Disaster a lot. TNG is a show where the continuity episodes are few and far between and don't affect my watching them or not on a rewatch. I mean, I watch every episode because I can't not, but still.

Separate the crew, give them all different missions (some of which admittedly feel like makework), make those missions varied (deliver a baby! escort some whiny kids! maybe sentence engineering to death!), see what happens with odd pairings: it's a good episode.

It’s cool that the problem in “Disaster” is relatively small-scale, just the one ship rather than a whole planet, or a war, or time itself. That’s rare in today’s fiction, and I miss it.

The problem’s also more relatable than most Trek plots. We understand that “the ship/town is wrecked and people need to cope” a lot more than “Godlike Being #87 has decided to torture Our Heroes for shits and gigs.”

Man oh man does the TOS crew get captured / enslaved / ship stolen by aliens with superior tech / abilities a lot. You would think they would just have a standard response procedure for that kind of shit by the 10th or 11th time it happened.

    I mean.. not really

like everything in voyager, it was wildly inconsistent, and ranged from fucking up, over being fucked up, to fucking them up, plus time travel, of course

Worf delivering that baby is possibly the best comedy the franchise has ever done.
WORF: Congratulations. You are fully dilated to ten centimetres. You may now give birth.
KEIKO: That's what I've been doing!
WORF: Bearing down is the next stage. It should start at full dilation. Why has it not begun?
KEIKO: I don't know. I don't think it's up to me. It happens when it happens.
WORF: The computer simulation was not like this. That delivery was very orderly.
    KEIKO: Well, I'm sorry!

Worf is just such a great comedic character.

The great thing about Worf is that over the years you realize that everything you assume is part of his Klingon heritage is really just him being a stick-in-the-mud. Like, if he were a Ferengi, he'd be one of those super-annoying Ferengi who always follow the Rules of Acquisition.

The bit in DS9 when he finds out Keiko's due date and makes plans for like a month of month of leave of station is great.

You know that Ferengi death ritual where they take the desiccated body and divide it into 52 little packages for sale? I would imagine that Worf would happily respect that ritual in Brunt's case.

Just without bothering with the dead body first. Or the desiccation.

Really, just a lot Ferengi screeching and Worf stomping Brunt parts into little discs, one at a time.

i "forced" my kids to watch Wrath of Khan tonight. Kids are 17, 14, and 11. The 11 year old covered his eyes for the ear worms. One thing that really stood out to me is how not great the tech in old trek is. Like, in TNG basically science magic everywhere. The problems in TNG are very different than the problems in TOS. In Wrath, there's a lot going on that other people have written better but i really felt the game being played between Kirk and Khan so much more this time around. Seeing my kids shocked at the repair speed was delightful. Seeing the Z access maneuver blew their minds.

Might I suggest you show them:
    Run Silent, Run Deep
    Das Boot
    U-571
    The Hunt for Red October
    K-19: The Widowmaker
    Crimson Tide
    Hunter Killer

God I love submarine movies. I'm probably forgetting a good one on that list.

Das Boot is pretty tough, though (apart from the occasional naked bum) it's not overly explicit in terms of sex, violence or gore. Then again, I did probably watch that close to when it was first shown, which would mean I was around seven or so. Come to think of it, I don't think my parents kept me from watching... oh, pretty much anything.

Not every movie has to be watched with the kids!

Also because of that damn list I ended up watching another Sub Movie last night, HOSTILE WATERS!
made for HBO/BBC TV movie and it was great!
main star is Rutguer Hauer playing a Cold War era Russian submarine captain facing off again the American Captain in his boat, played by Martin Sheen.
Quasi true story about K-219 sinking off the american coast in the 80s with its missile doors open.

The producers understood that the secret ingredient most submarine movies lacked was more brain rape.

When I have a telepath on my show I'm going to make sure they never get controlled or screwed up like that even once.

Not only for Troi, but for Tuvok as well. Poor guy.

Finally got all of TNG off my blu-rays and onto my home media server. Watched All Good Things to celebrate. It hurts a little that All Good Things is a better TNG movie than, well, any of the TNG movies. I really do hope we get a visit from Q at some point in Picard.

Q should have moved on to harassing another Starfleet captain by now.

Their interaction should be Q and Picard coming accidentally face to face with each other in a crowd.

There is something really fucked up with The Admonition message. Because it seems to turn everyone who hears it into homicidal maniacs. The sane reaction to "If you trigger this message we will come and genocide everything" is not "Fuck yeah!". Even if there is a fleet of murderous romulan fanatics incoming.
