I bumped the old post I made that announced the trip. Here's the orig. topic post, quoted:
For Japan, it's an 8 day tour thing (although really it's 6 full days and like... one night and one morning.).
I suppose this might make for some interesting discussion?
So, I guess they won't allow me to use my DS's wireless capability for multiplayer and stuff, eh?
EDIT: On the plane, that is.
Well, damn, I have a lot of pictures. I'm just gonna post a couple that I picked out for now, with more to follow in the future. I'll probably add less and less, as I might decide to really trim down...
I flew on Japan Airlines. Boy, this was a surprise. Now they have little Wiimote-like (okay the Wiimote ripped the design off of these things) controllers/remotes that you can pull out of your armrest. And there are LCD screens for every seat, installed in the back of the seat that is in front of you. Or, if there is no seat in front of you, you can flip out from the side of your seat... the screen is attached to an adjustable metal arm/pole thingie.
You can choose what music to listen to, what movies/programs, and even play kinda-crappy basic games. It depends on the plane, though... on one, they let you start and watch any movie that they had, and you could pass and rewind and fastforward and all that. But another flight had the videos playing and repeating at set times. Also, the games vary from plane to plane. One had a very slow-running, low-color Tetris ripoff, and another had an actual Tetris-brand game. The controls kinda sucked for both of those, though, so I just preferred to play Tetris DS on my (duh) DS. And this is all in economy class, snap!
Damn proprietary Sony plug+headphones! I had to use the plane's headphones b/c of this, and not my more compact earbud-style ones.
As we got off of the plane, we kinda crammed into a train-like tram that took us from the ... terminal to the... main part of the airport.
Outside of Narita International Airport, where we waited with our tour guide for the bus to take us to the hotel, where the rest of the tour group had already arrived.
On the bus to the hotel... the first of many hotels...
A convenience store... I think we went to this same one later that night.
Inside of the hotel lobby.
We ate at a restaurant in the hotel (paid for by the tour fee already), which advertised that it had Western-style food... Hrm.
After dinner, we were free to sleep or wander around outside. There were just convenience stores and stuff that we could walk to, though... There wasn't much sidewalk around... not even a stoplight! People just jaywalked across, and it was night time as well. Anyway, we jaywalked across to the convenience store right across from the hotel. Man, this area felt a bit like it was in the middle of nowhere.
The magazine/book/manga section in that convenience store. If you walked down that aisle more to the left, they had an 18+ section with naughty magazines and some h-doujinshi(!). I took a pic of that, but I can't find it at the moment.
Aw man, it's one of those hills reinforced by a brick stone wall thingie that I've seen in Japanese tv shows and anime!
That convenience store from the outside. On the right of it is a joint that serves (among other things, I think) ramen.
This was the sink in our hotel room's bathroom. The shower is also in this room. Drinkable tap water, eh? Well, I guess a bunch of you guys drink from the tap here anyway... but later in Vietnam, I pretty much always tried to drink bottled water.
Toilet's in a separate, small closet-like room next to the bathroom. Oddly, the lightswitch is located on the outside.
I'll reply to this thread with more pictures in the future...

Lol kidding. I'm Vietnamese and I have relatives and stuff there. The last time I went, I saw a bunch of white and black people (tourists) around the more populated shopping-y areas.... I saw at least one big nice-looking hotel in that area.
Yeah, well Reno's a fucking shithole
if I ever go to vietnam, the first thing I am doing is shouting the good morning vietnam thing
just find some small vietnamese child
hold him down
and just straight yell it inches from his face
There are heaps of prostitutes there.
And alcohol.
I'm suprised I didn't make any bad life choices/bad life diseases while there.
That I can remember, there was the morning I woke up without wearing any underwear yet still had my shorts on, I still don't know what happened.
Satans..... hints.....
Phuket is fucking awesome and is a party every night, lunchtime and morning. The water is bizarely hot and the Scuba Diving is insanely good. The locals are also incredibly friendly and I met heaps of cool people locals and tourists.
Satans..... hints.....
I visited Reno and after a couple of days I started to understand how Johnny Cash felt.
I wanted to shoot someone just to watch them die

Kyoto, the anagram-lover's Tokyo. To be honest it's number one on my "Places I would like to visit in Japan" list.
The OP should totally bring us back a necklace made out of Charlie's teeth. Even if it means he has to get all his young cousins to give up their sweet tooth-fairy money to do so.
and winging it is the best
Fair enough. Personally I could not see myself pulling off a trip where I hadn't planned out what I was going to do beforehand. I would probably end up doing a lot of aimless wandering and not fully knowing what was worth doing and what wasn't due to the cultural gap. I was just presenting some well-meaning advice to the other forumers, as not everyone can make up a vacation as they go.
topical and funny!
I sniffed out some great back-alley cafes for my group. A bigger and bigger crowd was coming with me during the free time every day we were there.
So really there's a balance for everyone.
Venice on foot with a streaky Xerox map is so fun dude. I didn't get to see much of Rome unfortunately, didn't even have time to hit up the Colosseum. Florence and Venice were my two favorite cities and I walked them one end to the other. Highly recommend it.
I say "I want to see that thing on maybe that day."
And the rest of the time, you do whatever tickles your fancy.
