I bumped the old post I made that announced the trip. Here's the orig. topic post, quoted:
Old post wrote:
For Japan, it's an 8 day tour thing (although really it's 6 full days and like... one night and one morning.).
I suppose this might make for some interesting discussion?

So, I guess they won't allow me to use my DS's wireless capability for multiplayer and stuff, eh?
EDIT: On the plane, that is.

Well, damn, I have a lot of pictures. I'm just gonna post a couple that I picked out for now, with more to follow in the future. I'll probably add less and less, as I might decide to really trim down...

mini-japan%20001.jpg
I flew on Japan Airlines. Boy, this was a surprise. Now they have little Wiimote-like (okay the Wiimote ripped the design off of these things) controllers/remotes that you can pull out of your armrest. And there are LCD screens for every seat, installed in the back of the seat that is in front of you. Or, if there is no seat in front of you, you can flip out from the side of your seat... the screen is attached to an adjustable metal arm/pole thingie.

You can choose what music to listen to, what movies/programs, and even play kinda-crappy basic games. It depends on the plane, though... on one, they let you start and watch any movie that they had, and you could pass and rewind and fastforward and all that. But another flight had the videos playing and repeating at set times. Also, the games vary from plane to plane. One had a very slow-running, low-color Tetris ripoff, and another had an actual Tetris-brand game. The controls kinda sucked for both of those, though, so I just preferred to play Tetris DS on my (duh) DS. And this is all in economy class, snap!

mini-japan%20002.jpg
Damn proprietary Sony plug+headphones! I had to use the plane's headphones b/c of this, and not my more compact earbud-style ones.

As we got off of the plane, we kinda crammed into a train-like tram that took us from the ... terminal to the... main part of the airport.

2omw50dhyq3ymyziwzjm.jpg
Outside of Narita International Airport, where we waited with our tour guide for the bus to take us to the hotel, where the rest of the tour group had already arrived.

A convenience store... I think we went to this same one later that night.

Inside of the hotel lobby.
mz1mbaziiyzvztddj1mz.jpg

ndbdjy0mn2otq0j4jnuk.jpg
We ate at a restaurant in the hotel (paid for by the tour fee already), which advertised that it had Western-style food... Hrm.

After dinner, we were free to sleep or wander around outside. There were just convenience stores and stuff that we could walk to, though... There wasn't much sidewalk around... not even a stoplight! People just jaywalked across, and it was night time as well. Anyway, we jaywalked across to the convenience store right across from the hotel. Man, this area felt a bit like it was in the middle of nowhere.

yuzztuzlndy5imm2dwjd.jpg
The magazine/book/manga section in that convenience store. If you walked down that aisle more to the left, they had an 18+ section with naughty magazines and some h-doujinshi(!). I took a pic of that, but I can't find it at the moment.

1ityzc0ntnm3zd2knzyj.jpg
Aw man, it's one of those hills reinforced by a brick stone wall thingie that I've seen in Japanese tv shows and anime!

etwmmtvw44h2yoym51ku.jpg
That convenience store from the outside. On the right of it is a joint that serves (among other things, I think) ramen.

muzww4i2mtd4jngxumzx.jpg
This was the sink in our hotel room's bathroom. The shower is also in this room. Drinkable tap water, eh? Well, I guess a bunch of you guys drink from the tap here anyway... but later in Vietnam, I pretty much always tried to drink bottled water.

jm0c0dqydmfjjmjdzknn.jpg
Toilet's in a separate, small closet-like room next to the bathroom. Oddly, the lightswitch is located on the outside.

I'll reply to this thread with more pictures in the future...

I'm going to Ho Chi Minh City, because I am a Communist.

Lol kidding. I'm Vietnamese and I have relatives and stuff there. The last time I went, I saw a bunch of white and black people (tourists) around the more populated shopping-y areas.... I saw at least one big nice-looking hotel in that area.

Bangkok is a hole, the surrounding towns and cities are nice but the Capital is a hole. It might be ok if you live there but for tourists it blows.

Phuket is fucking awesome and is a party every night, lunchtime and morning. The water is bizarely hot and the Scuba Diving is insanely good. The locals are also incredibly friendly and I met heaps of cool people locals and tourists.

I'm definitely the type of traveler that doesn't like to plan everything out. There are some things I know I'll want to do and that I know need to be scheduled in advance, like chartering a diving trip on a boat. Otherwise I just have in mind some things I'd like to do but don't feel the need to actually schedule them in. I like to leave my options open and often I find myself doing stuff that I hadn't even thought of before the trip because it never occurred to me.

It's good to budget your time though so you don't end up missing out on something you might never get to do again. Just saying "I'll spend 5 hours max in this shopping district" so you won't run out of vacation before the tour of some ancient castle or something cool. Minor structuring can greatly improve the enjoyment of your trip.

I understand where you're coming from, but that's a particular perspective and I don't happen to share it. I've rarely felt that I've missed out on something because I didn't have a schedule and often I find that opportunities present themselves that end up being very memorable experiences but that I never would or could have scheduled in. This isn't about one of us being wrong and the other being right, we just have different perspectives on travel and when I go to another culture, I want to be open to experiencing parts of the culture I wouldn't have known about before going there.

Fair enough. Personally I could not see myself pulling off a trip where I hadn't planned out what I was going to do beforehand. I would probably end up doing a lot of aimless wandering and not fully knowing what was worth doing and what wasn't due to the cultural gap. I was just presenting some well-meaning advice to the other forumers, as not everyone can make up a vacation as they go.

See, I find that aimless wandering takes you off the beaten path which is often where you really get to understand a culture better. But again, that's my perspective. That's partly why I've never done a cruise ship and I've only done one tour of Europe years ago where the itinerary for the group was mapped out. It was fun, but when I split off from the group in Germany and spent another 2 weeks in Spain and Switzerland, I got to experience some really cool local culture that I would most likely not have seen with a tour group. Tour groups basically assume that you'll want to see what other tourists enjoyed seeing, but the thing is those other tourists generally were also steered toward certain landmarks or places that they were told they "must see", so they can't really compare it to the stuff they didn't experience.

I had a really cool structured tour of Italy years back. What made it great was that, sure, we saw the landmarks and visited the famous sites, but they also gave us 4-8 hours of time in the middle of the day where it was just "okay kids, meet back here at XO'clock for dinner/bus."

I sniffed out some great back-alley cafes for my group. A bigger and bigger crowd was coming with me during the free time every day we were there.

So really there's a balance for everyone.

Venice on foot with a streaky Xerox map is so fun dude. I didn't get to see much of Rome unfortunately, didn't even have time to hit up the Colosseum. Florence and Venice were my two favorite cities and I walked them one end to the other. Highly recommend it.
