In open world, my company has been rolling the hell out of people, so I haven't been experienced enough in the death department to know there. It has to be more minor than a PvE death, though, since I have died and didn't really notice it.

Separately, has anyone tried huge con builds even on dps for PvP? Been tempted to try it.

I walked by some freshly planted hyssop at work this morning, and I swear to god I stopped for just a second to look at it. My brain got confused for just a minute that I didn't have a sickle in my hand.

I spent somewhere around 50 gold today just fixing my axe.
It got me from 88 to 97 on woodchopping, sure, but still feels somewhat pricey considering i just throw most of the wood i cut away because i have zero need for it.

Doh, started a new guy on a new, more populous server just to see if I could stand releveling rather than waiting to pick a new Cov and join my true and righteous brethren in the yellow boiz. Promptly tried to switch my starting zone from Everfall to First Light by walking there and assuming new user quests would be interchangeable. Woops! Back we go!

To complicate things, there was a period of time today where people were able to dupe gold.

They aren’t rolling servers back, just banning anyone who “used the exploit,” but there are now people running around with millions of gold. That’s gonna be greaaat.

The combat in this game feels off.
Not in that combat is bad, fundamentally, or broken, or anything like that.
It just feels like the enemies and the player character are operating in sublty different, if very similar, systems.
Npc's are ever so slightly too fast, have ever so slightly too much reach, and sometimes do ever so slightly too much damage (not talking of bears or enemies with special health bars, just basic mobs), for the combat to be smooth.
Sure part of this might just be my choice of musket/Fire staff weapon combo, but even when not doing any damage and just dodging and parrying, or using other weapons, to slight feeling of things being off remains.

The distance that enemies will chase you is about 50% longer than it really needs to be. I feel like I have to run forever before something finally leashes. Like, into the next zip code. It's incredibly obnoxious considering how easy it is to aggro things in this game.

I've almost hit 51 and I finally advanced the main quest enough to enter amrine. If I hadn't bought some ah stuff I'd probably be near 21k and could buy the 2nd house first but i've not really needed the extra storage. With my azoth charging gathering tools, i usually can stay above enough to teleport a lot so I usually go to first light to drop off leather and wood, and windsward for ores. its funny though to have 3 layered bags and hold more than your storage (I'm at 51 winsward rank so I have my storage at 1200 and my inventory is sitting at almost 1300 wt).

Beyond that though I just spend my time doing town projects for a modicum of gold (usually 100 in a day) and i usually get another 50 or so from random mob drops. otherwise, yeah for gold you mainly just get it off the AH unless you do a lot of bartering. My server Eupana I started with windsward and purple so that town has almost everything at tier 4 with i think a couple of things at tier 5. And I lore hunt. I'm about to start in on Monarch's which will be my final starting zone to clear. Windsward as the most missing tomes so far at 5 or 6, Everfall I think only everfall's wreckage page 1 is not in game, first light can be fully completed, and then we'll see about monarch.

For my fiber run I usually do the below route around windsward, I can net 3k or more fibers on that run, and hit grenville and cooper's villages for chests, with maybe two more villages as well. Iron I've seen 2 good loops around but most people run them so I need to look elsewhere for an iron run.

That's kind of true, but it's also not nearly as close to Ultima Online or SWG as I had hoped.

Like, the biggest similarity to UO is in the resource gathering. Crafting and player housing are nowhere near as satisfying, even if this take on housing is much fairer than what UO did. The PvP is probably better than the open world ganking of UO, but still far less interesting than something like Shadowbane. The quest system is very repetitive and boring. The mob variety is extremely repetitive and boring. I don't think I'd still be playing this game if I didn't need a time sink to distract me while providing the regular false sense of accomplishment that dinging away at character levels and crafting levels and gathering levels provides.

I get real EVE vibes from this game.

    Not many enemy models
    player run economy
A horrible crafting grind ( hi blueprint research )
Open world PVP that trends towards large blobs
All the Corp on Corp drama over who runs the good regions
    Siege timers

Honestly it is too grindy, and not enough PVE options which was fine for EVE as the player drama is what keeps people around. What Corp leader this week will steal all the money and transfer away? Find out Sunday morning!

The generated quests are definitely tedious by design, but I think the parameters are also just shitty on top of that. I just had a faction quest to open 12 chests in one area which is just waaaay too many.

:( my main thing has been how easy and rote all mmos since wow have been. Outside of raids it’s just hot keys in set rotations with no chance of death or things going wrong; and it’s the same for raids you just need a bazillion add ons. Which makes it all so boring. Was hoping this had knocked up that formula a bit but it sounds like not.

Shadowbane had a neat pvp concept but almost everything else about that game was terrible. Some great politicking though.

They never intended for the PvE to be interesting or compelling in any way, and it showed. It was 100% PvP focused, and as a result it's still the best PvP MMO that's ever been produced that I'm aware of.

The PvP was very good, they gave you worthwhile things to fight over on a daily basis, there was a ridiculous variety of possible builds and you could make most of them actually work, and yes, the politicking was great.

I remember at one point the best build tech guy in our guild decided that we would all make barbarians in whatever the bird race was that could fly until their stamina was exhausted, using throwing daggers and a build that allowed you to regenerate stamina about as fast as you expended it. We showed up to the next mine fight with a mass of flying barbarians that absolutely murdered our opposition's melee fighters with thrown daggers (something that almost never got used) without ever getting touched by them. Our target callers made sure we took out all the usual glass cannons first and then we were just floating up there in the sky taking out the melee toons at our leisure. iirc our healers were all centaurs for the extra speed/mobility with a bit more snares specced than usual so that they could run in en masse as needed to heal our flying barbarians and snare everyone who might chase them before running back off out of sight.

It wasn't a sustainable strategy since anyone who knew what was coming could make sure to bring a ton of magesins or scouts or whatever ranged specialists they felt like and be competitive, but we'd coordinate and bring the birb barbs out every so often and it was absolutely hilarious and horrifyingly effective every time. Just one of many of my favorite MMO memories courtesy of Shadowbane.

About to hit 40 primarily gathering and doing faction/town board stuff. Been slow since 30, but very chill. The loop of gathering/crafting/raiding towns for more in between supplies has been really enjoyable for me. I haven't really bothered with anything that involves other people yet. I imagine that's where they have the most room to grow.

My biggest issue now is leaving my damn starting zone(s). I stayed in First Light for friggin' ever and now I've settled into Keys a little too long. The 40 zones are so damn far away. I'll just have to cut ties and start over there until I can get a foothold.

Definitely worth my 40 bucks (which honestly surprised me after alpha/betas, but I'm not sure I'd stick around once I got to 60 unless I can actually sell some of the stuff I'm crafting (or at least sustain my gameplay with reasonable time commitment - I really would like to do the whole house thing).

    Hah, goats are indeed bastards.

And it wasn't 100% directed at you, believe me. I've seen in this thread a few times where people complain about enemy variety and it pains me because, they're right in terms of it being tightly themed for the first 30-40 levels, but they then apply it to the whole game and it's so far off the mark that it's infuriating

I even saw in-game (not here) people complaining about there not being a zone that's not European theme and, while the complaint in and of itself of wanting different themed zones is correct, Ebonscale is Asian themed (and has different style Corrupted mobs to go with it that I forgot). It's actually my current favorite zone. The complainer had no idea it existed, though.
    P10 wrote: »

Agreed. Angry Earth should've been hinted at earlier and showed up earlier. As it was, I'd get gear that was +% against Angry Earth or whatever and I was like "Who the hell are they?".

That being said, Blight is evil and I hate it.

    **

I guess the main thing I'm getting at is a lot of people are saying that the game doesn't have a lot of enemy variety and I don't believe them to be correct given what I've see at 60+ / having played WAY too much of the game. Almost every time the person hasn't reached the 40s yet and while that's understandable given how much of a grind the game can be, it also means they haven't seen half the game.

I DO think they should've started showing up earlier, but that's a different complaint.

New World has about as much variety as any game. The problem I see with it is since there's no real quests that explain what's going on, you're totally dependent on reading little snippets of lore that you find (if you even bother). If the game had a more traditional quest system that did a better job of feeding players a more cohesive story, I think they would get it.

Otherwise, it does feel like you're just fighting variations of different zombies or wildlife.

My biggest positive with New World is that they did a fantastic job of creating an immersive feeling world. Then they don't do anything with it except have you run generic kill/gather/deliver quests that are very literally generic in ever sense of the world.

Find X item in Y location Z number of times or kill X thing in Y location Z number of times, where X/Y/Z are pulled from a list of variables, and strung together. That's the complete extent of the quest system, outside of the main story...which honestly really comes out of nowhere in a lot of ways itself.

It's bad all over. Whether it's global, faction or whatever chat, or even voice and text chat in faction specific Discord, this has to be one of the most toxic communities I've ever seen.

In the Syndicate discords I'm in, a female player made a comment about working on cooking some buff food before going into a dungeon. The level of outrageous misogyny that blew up over VOICE CHAT was bonkers. Even jumping in with a "seriously, what the fuck" comment didn't even register.

I've sort of hit a wall in the low 30's where leveling really is feeling like a grind, and I just don't even know if it's worth it to be part of this community.

Agreeing with all the above. I actually have been playing with every channel muted. I turn on Area if I'm looking for Elite help. It kind of turns the game into a shitty Skyrim mod with strange NPCs running around stealing my shit, but it's been much more relaxing than watching the roaring dumpster fire that is a totally unrestrained chat system.
