    The planet is Jupiter... Give me a few minutes and I can probably tell you what the star is.

    If I had to guess I would say that star is epsilon Scorpii (of the constellation Scorpius), which is a star of spectral type K2IIIb... which would make it a giant star that should appear red.

    Also... stars like the one you photographed appear to flicker and change color due to turbulence in the Earth's atmosphere scattering the light. Stars don't need to be near the horizon for this to happen.
