Found another great one in the game maker community.

Soldexus

Main site:

And the forum post on the game maker community site.

Soldexus is very similar to games like Castlevania, Metroid, and Cave Story. You're in a giant castle, exploring various areas. You get powerups that let you explore even further. And you also earn cash that can be used to purchase powerups.

Your main character is Ian.

4120_soldexus2.png

Ian met an unfortunate end, and has been granted the opportunity for a second chance at life by Death. But first, he has to do Death a favor.

The story's setting is a bit generic, but it's execution is wonderful. Definitely watch through it.

ianrun.PNG

This game is hard. You'll typically die in just four hits or so. One enemy was able to off me in just two. Learning enemies patterns and learning to utilize all of your abilities is the key to success.

Beautiful oldschool graphics, and plenty of action. You guys will love this shit.

Almost forgot, definitely suggest using a gamepad with this one.

I'd feel a lot better about downloading and installing the thing if you linked to the developer page or something.

Did anyone else think of the "Look at these Fucking Peppers" picture, or just me?

Seriously though, maybe link a website instead of asking people to download your zip and assumedly exe from a random website.

I find it slightly unnerving that we have gained the reputation for fapping over old school graphics to the point where someone makes a thread, claiming "You guys will love this shit."

That said, I'm curious about whatever the hell this is.

    Good point.

The main site is pretty bland:

And this is the forum post about it:

It doesnt really have old school graphics, it has lazy graphics. While a lot of it does look nice, theres just as much that is just filled with a color.

Regardless, it is a pretty awesome little game. If you liked Castlevania then you should definitely give this one a try.

Plays okay I guess from the short while I tried it. It looks pretty terrible though; there's nothing "beautiful" or "oldschool" about these graphics.

I think you are just suppose to jump past some of these enemies, certainly makes more sense than risking a hit on them. I quit playing this after my third death.

Yes, I'm quite certain the developer for this and the worm game hired him to pimp it here.

is this game actually any good? I had a bit of fun with the worm one, but some kind of windowed mode would be nice.

I'm loving it. I've been lurking around on the forums over there a bit, looking to see if anything interests me, and this is one of the ones that popped out. I probably downloaded about ten or so. There was another I thought was pretty nifty, but it was a work in progress, and the current content is severly lacking (and buggy).

Some people might have a problem with the high difficulty, and the sometimes cheap deaths, but we've all experienced the same in old NES games. IMO? Totally worth your time.

Oh, and there's a windowed mode on this one.

The game is challenging, I'll grant it that. A hint: if you're completely stumped about what to do, check the guide included within the game.

Also, once you get the timing down, spamming the overhead slash will make the game easier, way easier. There are places where you actually have to do so to not get hit.

Pretty neat game once you get the hang of it. You've pretty much got to use a hit and run tactic on most of the enemies so far, though. I can't wait to get more damage upgrades and start knocking them out with a single hit (hopefully).

And the double jump (you get it pretty early on) makes things a LOT easier.

I would just like to mention that the game gets harder once you beat the second boss. Also, there are secret minigames where you can win upgrades. ALSO, there is something called the Abandoned Temple, it is only accessible after you beat the third boss, but to progress in it you probably need to get 100% of items.

Still, the game has some great fighting mechanics. Once you get used to it you will be making Neo jealous every step of the way.

    PS: HOMING MEDUSA HEADS!

Yeah, I'm up to the second boss right now, and I can't even make a dent in him. I mean literally, I can't even do a single speck of damage.

Well, that's not true... I can, but it seems that you can only damage him right before he swings, and since he's so damn fast, it doesn't seem possible to hit him and get away fast enough to avoid taking a hit.

So I decided to explore, and came across some weird train thing where I get absolutely slaughtered by a bunch of enemies I've never seen before.

I found the second boss to be the hardest, and he only gets worse after you chop off half of his health. He's vulnerable for a moment right after an attack, so hit him then. It's a bitch fight, but it's pretty great.

I'm pretty sure parry doesn't go up for sell at the shop til after this fight, but it's worth checking back there just in case. I can see it making the battle loads easier.

You unlock another character after you finish the game. The new character gets different moves too. So far I've only come across the first boss, but they're raping me constantly. You only do a pixel's worth of damage per hit, and they can take you down in 3 or 4.

No, you can buy Parry at the shop before the fight (it is, I think, dependent on your stats), but you can also get Parry after you beat the third boss as a reward.

I like the bosses in this game because they are hard, yet not unfair. You just have to pay attention to the movements.

Where is that shop, then? I've been wondering when I'd come across another one, as I was getting a little sick of going all the way back to the beginning every time I wanted to buy something.

And on that note, is the Hint Ring worth it? I've found a few hidden blocks here and there, but I'm wondering if there's just a ton that I'm missing, or would the 15k be better spent on other stuff?

Maybe I have sown confusion about this, but there is only one shop. What I have meant is that you can buy Parry before you fight the second boss, though I'm not 100% positive on that one.

You should wait until you find a discount item and then buy the Hint Ring. You are probably missing quite a few though, since some of them are quite devious. Have you, for example, found a minigame (excluding the train)?

EDIT: OH JESUS FUCK PARRY CHALLENGE! First you struggle with the bombs and then he pulls out A FUCKING LASER CANNON! How the hell am I supposed to parry that?
