Tony Hawk's Project 8: Thumbs up/down?

My dilemma:

I am buying my younger brother a 360 for a graduation gift, and for a game, it's a tossup between Guitar Hero II and Tony Hawk's Project 8. Normally this would seem like a no brainer, but consider that my brother has played every single Tony Hawk game, apart from the handhelds, and used to be really big into actual skateboarding. So to say the least, he would not be averse to the game. On the other hand, Guitar Hero.

My only concern is that Project 8 might not be very good, since I don't play those kind if games and wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a masterpiece and crap smeared on a canvas, and I'd hate for him to be let down, since he's only played P8 in demo kiosks.

Is it worth a purchase?

Project 8 was like 20 at costco. Guitar Hero is infinetely better though a completely different type of game. I've had my fill of Tony Hawk, great game as it may be about 5 iterations ago.

If you ahve the extra cash moneys for the gift, go for GH.

P8 is really good, but is about to be totally outclassed by .skate, which is lookikng much more realistic. If your brother is like every skater I know including myself*, he'd prefer that, I think, but I'm not sure when it's out.

*Well, ex-sakter, now just a bloke that owns a badly ignored board.

Project 8 isn't a bad game, it certainly looks really good, and is a large improvement over the few previous versions. However, i'd recommend keeping a look out for 'skate' from EA, coming later this year supposedly. It's one i've been following, and looks to be far more down-to-earth (i've got a thread on it around here, but it's a few weeks old now), and not about doing a 1080 rodeo flip off a burning circus tent onto Phil Margera's balls.
I've not played Guitar Hero 2 on the 360.. but, i mean.. as you say, it's Guitar Hero 2. It's going to be good.

    edit: BEN'D!

i'm also a former skater (crap one, too), with an ignored board sitting around. Shame.

I liked Project 8 a lot. I skipped THUG1/2/THAW because they were really lame, but P8 was fun. A nice throwback to the time when the game was about fun skateboarding instead of MTV-style retard antics.

But if it's between P8 and Guitar Hero, get Guitar Hero. There's way more replayability there, it's fun as hell for just about everyone.

Project 8 is really good, but Guitar Hero needs to be the purchase. Proving Ground (the next Tony game) is out before the end of the year, and promises to be 8, but... evolved. And of course there's 'skate.'.

But if he hasn't played the handheld versions and has a DS, goddamn you need to get him one of the DS ones. They're really great.
    (of course, I'm biased)

The question should be, since its your brother, does he like Guitar Hero? Has he ever played it or any other rhythm type games?

Everyone loves GH, whereas P8 isnt nearly as universally hailed, but since your brother is a TH fan P8 might be the safe bet, if he's not into rhythm games. There's a chance that he might be the rare breed that doesn't like it. (I know such a thing is a blasphemy round these parts. Please don't hurt me).

However, if he is at all open to the game type go with GH.

I thought Project 8 was very good. Get both. I saw Project 8 for $10 at Costco.

since you are buying your younger bro such a great present with the hardware I'd go with the cheaper game. that and I've heard the game is pretty good.

I enjoyed Project 8. I kind of liked Underground but Underground 2 and American Wasteland bored me to death, not to mention I hated the wacky-ass sophomoric, Jackass-esque humor. It was a nice throwback to the originals, most of the dumb humor is gone, and it is one of the two games that I have actually managed to get all 1000 gamerscore points on.

That said...Guitar Hero II is teh secks.

I'd say get him GHII if you think he'll want something new, and get him Project 8 if you think he'll like more classic gameplay. Keep in mind that if your brother hasn't played Guitar Hero before, there's no guarantee that he will like it or rhythm games in general, which could sting if you spend close to $100 and he doesn't get attached to it.

Course, you also should consider that Project 8 is significantly cheaper than Guitar Hero II.

I loved Project 8, got it for Christmas and played the hell out of it. I think Guitar Hero 2 is more fun, but P8 is a great game, especially after how much the last few TH games sucked.

This pretty much sums up my feelings about Project 8. That said, everybody loves Guitar Hero, so you can't really go wrong either way,

yeah, i didn't mean to sound like i was pissing on Project 8. It is a good game, and a much better effort than some of the more 'Jackass the game' styled ones. But as everyone's saying, you should be able to get it for cheap now, and if he's at all interested in Guitar Hero, then that'd be a much more worthwhile purchase.

Get him P8 with this gift and save GH for the next big birthday/holiday/whatever. Gotta spread these things out, and considering you know he likes Tony Hawk and you're already giving him a 360... it gets the nod from me.

Mind you, I loved both Project 8 (and I do enjoy a bit more along the lines of 1080 flips onto someone's flaming nuts... wait... what?) and Guitar Hero II has probably gotten more awesome gameplay on my 360 than anything else. Both are great, but GHII is pricy if he's already getting a 360.

P8 is good, but the character creation is horribly lacking, and the skaters move at snail pace.

i skate every day for a couple of hours, skaters are not that slow.

there. It annoyed the hell out of me that i could either be captain hip-hop, skinny punk, stoned beach-bum, child, or girl.
There was a little variation in that (am i black or am i white?), but i was really disappointed by the lack of options.
