The third picture kicks ass! The cropping and angle make an already good shot better, love it. The second one as well, did you manually block out the lower half of the light pole in post process or was it like that from the start? Looks great
Gafoto, I like these last two, good contrast in teh first one. The second is cool to me because of the continuity of the white siding and how the shadows on all the boards are almost exactly the same. Nice ones.

The over-exposure on my last fountain photo was on purpose. It looked really boring w/o it but the over exposure made it look... boring really. As for the bench photo, the lamp post was dark near the bottom but i did play with levels to enhance that a little.
Gafoto, you mentioned needing a tripod for the last photo and I'm curios as to why you made that suggestion. It seemed pretty sharp for a handheld shot but are you referring to angle or the fact that it was over-exposes (which was on purpose). Thanks!
Altmann, I like the lamp/bench photo. The others don't really grab me.
Gafoto, I love the water lilies and take objection to your description of either photo as boring. Really, I especially like the lilies and appreciate your composition, the tonal textures, and the reflection is a nice touch of subtle visual interest ... still the whole image is very simple and zen-like.

Whenever I take pictures of water I try to get a long exposure, about a second or so to get the water nice and blurred. I'd like to see what it would've turned out as.
Don't post that shit, who the fuck even bothers to take pictures of the golden pavilion?
I actually kind of like seeing how people photograph the same site from the same very small space along that pond with similar cameras yet always end up with a slightly different shot.
Alrighty, it's been awhile since i posted any photo's around these parts but here's some from my world travels in the last couple of months. Any and all suggestions would are awesome, as are most of the photo's in this thread.
This is a shot out of the window of a boeing 767 on my way to Australia.
Also Australia I believe this town is called Maloolabaa or some variation of that. I would like to get this printed on canvas but, I'm not sure it would turn out well, anyone have any experiance with that media?
I took this through plexiglass so i'm happy with the focus. (on a side note the Australia Zoo outside of Brisbane is the best Zoo I have ever been to, Steve Irwin did a hell of a job, if anyone finds themself in Brisbane I highly suggest heading out to the zoo)
This is Surfers Paradise, partial to sunrise and sunset pics I guess.
From Australia I headed back to Canada for 24 hours the jumped on a plane to the Domican Republic to be in a wedding.
After the Domican I went to the west coast and went fishing. I would really like some advice for sprucing up this shot, i like it but I think it needs some work, and I don't seem to have a clue of what.
And lastly a bald eagle doing it's thing.
Oh heres a nasty ass huntsman spider from when I was in Australia, apparently this was a baby one. Spoileres incase anyone has a phobia of spiders or anything.
Sorry for the huge dump, alot of kilometres were put on since my last post so many shots were taken.
oh, I found out why I have a Pro flickr account without paying for one. It turns out that if you have your internet through Rogers you get it for free. I guess cause they are partnered with Yahoo and Yahoo owns flickr. Kinda sweet.

Question to anyone that uses a UV/skylight and a CPL filter - I just got a CPL of my own, and I'm wondering if there's a "correct" position for it (ie in front of, or behind the UV/skylight), or does it doesn't matter?
bread of wonder on
Long distance runner, what you standin' there for?
Most UV filters are more for lense protection than much else. If you're using a CPL, use that and nothing else. I tend not to want to add much more between my sensor and shot. Adding 2 filters (unless you're stacking neutral density filters) is sort of useless. Unless you're using the UV to protect your CPL...
The above is my personal opinion and not much else.
Do not stack filters. That's the general rule. I've stacked a red filter and a CPL but that was with gels and it only works with black and white anyways.
UV filters don't seem to do anything, even against the blue haze they are supposed to prevent and unless you have an uber budget the filter you stick in front of your lens will give you a drop (albeit minor) in optical quality. I bought one but I don't use it, you just have to be carefull with your glass.
I don't use a UV, I use a skylight. They're essentially the same thing, but skylights make the colors a bit warmer (which I like to do in post-production anyway). I have heard that it's a bad idea to stack filters, but I don't always use the CPL and I'm a complete paranoid nut when it comes to the safety of my lenses after one got dropped and the UV broke instead of the glass.
Looks like I'll have to keep the CPL on at all times then.
And Jamp - that's a nice shot, but may I suggest pushing the contrast up a bit? Looks a little too gray.

So, this post is a representation of my first photography attempt...just purchased a camera today. Critiques would be appreciated, although I realize that this stuff might look a bit unprofessional by the standards already set in this thread!

Also, how do I post these without these annoying links?
Please don't go to my shitty Flickr
I don't think Flickr allows direct linkage - go ahead and open yourself up a Photobucket account for that sort of thing.
Yes they do. In their terms of service, they require that you link the photo back to flickr, however. I just link it to my photo's page.
P.S.- Nice sig, Bread.
