Has anyone else played Zanki Zero?

Really neat first person survival/dungeon crawler about eight people who wake up on a deserted, ruined island and find out they're the last of humanity and are all clones. You can just "reclone" them when they die and based on how they die you get various bonuses to make them more likely to survive (if they starve to death, their hunger bar drains more slowly next time, die to a bludgeoning attack and gain resistance to bludgeoning attacks, etc). It's from the Dangan Ronpa people and the influences are very obvious.

I would kill a significant number of people for a remastered Suikoden 1 and 2.

Absolutely touch the gameplay. One (and to a lesser but still present degree 2) suffers from "bosses are just large pools of HP and AoE attacks" and 2 has the worst mass combats in the series.

I'm very nostalgic for BOF3, even though I don't think I actually finished it?

I had a really bad habit of saving very infrequently in PS1-era RPGs and have a lot of incomplete playthroughs by losing progress and deciding it's not worth it to do that all again.

BoF1 was one of my formative RPGs, one of the first ones I rented with my brother and cousin and which we binged through over a weekend, sleeping over

We never finished it but I find myself remembering way more of it than I thought I did

Way ahead of its time, in retrospect, but a spectacularly clunky UI.

I played a fair amount of 2 and 3 back in the day. I played 1 a few months ago, and yeah, the UI is awful.

Clunky UI, but stuff like the underwater city, turning into a giant fish, the fusions and such. Those were pretty amazing for the time.

I'd say 1 holds up better than 2 all the way till end.

Then 1 goes, 'hol up we forgot the filler' and proceeds to bullshit your time to death. 2 just kind of makes filler 70% of the game. 'Hey we want to get to Gate. Boy I sure hope there isn't 20 hours of dumb back and forth fetch quests and distractions.' whew.

I need to fire up SNES BoF1 and see if the ui is different from the GBA port. That's what I did my playthroughs of 1 and 2 on.

BoF2 is probably the weakest in the series but it's still got some good stuff. Worst dragon system though.

Most of what I remember about 2 is that it had one of the worst localizations I know of for a game of its scope and pedigree.

BoF1 had a (visual-only) day-night cycle before Ocarina of Time, (light) world actions before Lufia 2, POV changes before FF6 and out-of-engine cinematics... well I guess after Ninja Gaiden but before every game had them.

It's kinda crazy that it doesn't get as much credit as it does.

I see Bravely Default is getting a new entry.

I kind of hope the combat is getting refined.

My biggest complaint was that the general gameplan actually got simpler the further along you went.

Kind of a consequence of SE's job systems in general - usually you get stronger... until it's totally broken.

Bravely Default though had the Spiritmaster abuse with total invincibility that only dropped long enough for the rest of your party to burst all their BP into a boss if you set everyone' speed up right.

Bravely Default 2 looks good, but I still wish they would put the first 2 games on the switch. I never finished the first and so haven't played the second and I'd like to do that before BD2 and don't wanna dig up my 3ds.

Mind you, it does have the best version of Cyan’s Bushido.

well it's not really a matter of whether the resulting thing is better or not (it isn't), it's a difference in approach

all they did for FF IV Complete was knock the edges off, bring the UI up to date and smooth everything out

they made actual new assets for FF VI, of a wholly different style

it's really more of a remake, imo

BoF3s combat animation in the early game wth Teepo and tiger guy being all slick and cool and kid Ryu barely getting his sword out and flailing it around with his eyes closed may be the greatest combat animation of all time.

Is that FFIV complete version not a bunch of new assets? Those are some radically different sprites than the original.

I may try the demo for BD2 just to see for sure.

Because I would love some turn based goodness.

But it looks like the combat is going to run into the same issues as before.

And if the writing hasn't improved much AND the battle system is still a good idea with poor execution well... that would be a shame.

I thought the battle system was executed well in BD1, particularly with the later bonus fights that expect you to have got some really strong combos and can hit back hard themselves.

Kinda like how the remake of Final Fantasy V added a bonus dungeon which basically said “oh, you think you’re overpowered? Let’s test that theory.”

BS sort of had a problem of not as many bonus fight options. Though I admit I still can’t beat the last one.

I feel like there's a pretty strong consensus that among the first 4 BoFs, it goes 4>3>1>2

Dragon Quarter is much more contentious.

I've only played the first two so I can't really have my own opinion here.

I like BoF2 a lot as well but I'd definitely put it last.

Especially the SNES version with its bogus ass random encounter rate.

Personally I like 3 more than 4 just cause 4 gets into that late PS1 era rpg bloat IMO.
