    Lights are loltastic, but it's only because the AI tends to be dumb and just fire off a ML when evasion is high. If I want to kill a light, I just focus it down, because even at 15% probability of a hit, when you're shooting AC/20s, large lasers, and PPCs, you only need to connect with a single round to fuck them up. A single lucky Gauss Rifle shot tends to end things pretty quick even against the most squirrely of opponents.

    The SLDF mediums of course are another story since you can fit enough firepower and heat damping to carve out the heaviest Assault's rear CT if you jump in at the right moment. And they can fit enough armor to withstand the inevitable reprisal and couple lucky hits that might sneak through.

    This. Luckily the odds of hitting a torso with an aimed shot are pretty good even early on.

    Or the left. Canon equipment placement has all the ammo in the left torso, opposite the gun. Remove the ammo, remove the threat.

    It's...maybe not built optimally.

    So I have a campaign pretty far along, but it's been a long while since I played- and I've picked up 4 of 5 DLCs for it in that time (everything but the Shadow Hawk pack, and I might just pick that up to show support and for shits and giggles). Would it be worth re-starting my career to take advantage of everything new?

    I wouldn't bother--all of the flashpoints are gated behind finishing the campaign anyway. You'll still get access to biomes and gear if you resume right now.

    AI doesn't know how to use lights so it's pointless to equate player vs AI light mechs and AI vs player light mechs. Lights really get good when you maximize evasion - pilotting 10, evasion gyro, keep on moving. AI often moves fast one round and then does something stupid the next, leaving it almost without evasion. Of course, it's totally true that one part of why lights can be good is that AI is even worse at killing a high evasion target than it is keeping up its own evasion. Unless you do something stupid and leave your mech in the middle of three lances of enemies.

    Another reason things aren't equal when looking at how easy it is to kill an AI light and how easy it is to kill a player-piloted light is that maxed armor means a single lucky hit doesn't kill a Firestarter, not even from an AC20. There's no point in using the flimsy 20t lights and the 35t ones have 110 CT armor for example.

    But yeah, in the end it boils down to this - you don't use lights because you are required to use them, you use them because it's a sandbox game and you want to use them. All I'm saying is that when used well, they are viable against far heavier opponents. With the Heavy Metal changes you can even use a truly craptastic chassis like a Cicada to kill heavy stock mechs, just add some of those melee mods. :P

    I will say that going full SLDF mediums with Heavy Metal weapons is nuts. They're not invincible unless you play them rather more patiently than I'm inclined to, but they do wonderfully for kinetic gameplay and tearing up the rear arc of hostiles. And if you do something dumb like equip a couple Phoenix Hawks with PPCs, they can do amusingly well as headshotting snipers.

    Or drop in a couple snub PPC +10 damage on them, jump to point blank, and blow somebody's rear to pieces before jumping back out.

    I think I did something like 2x SLDF Phoenix Hawks, and 2x SLDF Griffins to "tank" for them and utterly wrecked all comers because those mechs are broken.

    While Flashpoints are gated behind finishing the campaign in Campaign mode, they're unlocked (almost) immediately in Career mode. Playing the flashpoints in career mode is preferred anyway, since most aren't really tuned for end-game lances and pilots. So uh, see if you can finish the story, then start a fresh career?

    I have 8 days left to compete my first full career run and I just lost Owlman, a dude who I had from the start and was ranked 10 in everything. He went down like a boss taking two rounds of full strikes from a Rifleman, a Cyclops and a Highlander during a Flashpoint while riding an Archer. I was pissed that my snipers were not headshotting quickly enough. And of course, within two turns of Owlman dying, I cap the Highlander and burnthrough the Cyclops' torso. Alas.

    Do I replay that mission, or ride it out and finish the career?

    I did. Won the Flashpoint. Got the loot, all that. I was hoping that Owlman would be in the medbay for 59 days or whatever. He'd be out for the rest of the career, but at least he'd be alive! I ended playing after that victory, looking the at pre-mission autosave and pondering.

    There's no shame in making him Save Game Lazarus.

    If you're asking, though, ride it out. The late game can get a little stale when you have your core 10x4 pilots and tricked out mechs. These little disruptions are a good opportunity to change things up, try some new folks in the A Team roster.

    I really am getting the urge to fire up Battletech once again and see where I am in the game. My biggest problem with it was getting impatient and wishing I had a ton of mechs to choose from, then realizing that I had some crappy mechs that I was not happy with and turning it off. I just need to push through and also not be so headstrong with rushing my Awesome into melee rage by accident and keeping him back to snipe away with his 3 PPCs. Although I feel dirty leaving an Assault like that in the back when it should be up front tanking for the rest of the team. Maybe I'll switch over my other two snipers to brawlers instead. Probably a good idea for now.

    Edit: Also I need to complain that I was going to download some mods for MW5 the other day and got bugged that they require you to make an account to download them!!! So I ended up not getting any and turning off the computer in disgust. Does BT Mods also require an account to download them?

    I'd keep going because such a loss adds to your mercy company's personal narrative and your Career doesn't actually end at day 1200, just the scoring, so if you keep playing it's not like you won't be able to build someone else up over time.

    Ok good lord I need to share this. I am roflstomping everything in my current game post-campaign, and just aquired a bullshark which is just going to make it worse. I had planned to finish out all the flashpoints before rebooting on a career, but after learning they pop up in career as well I said the hell with it lets make it challenging again.

    And thus, a new career was started. I had the enemy difficult cranked up to hard, coring a mech destroys it,a nd lethality increased. My random mechs (iirc) were 2 mediums (centirion and Blackjack i think) and 3 lights (panther and 2 others I forget). not a great stable but the BJ had 2 ac/2s and 4 MLs so it wasn't awful. Respec'd them all to move the ammo/heatsinks to the legs, and selected a 1 skull mission to destroy a convoy (and if possible their escorts).

    Initially, the mission was going reasonably well, I had one mech of theirs nearly dead, had another nearly cored (but fairly healthy otherwise), and was in good shape to wipe out the convoy. The convoy was fast, however, so I had to focus them down first. When the second vehicle dropped, up pops a second lance of mechs! I managed to finish the convoy off, but now had a flea with 2 mgs, a flamer, and some MLs up in my (now very hot) mech grills), 3 mechs between me and escape, and a 4 pack coming up over a ridge on my left. I tried to kill off what I could as I moved, but it was just too much firepower for my poor little stock mechs. My one light was dakka'd to death in one round (lost RA/RT, then LA/LT, then cored), my BJ (with my pilot in it!) was next, she had already suffered a savage beating by both lances stomping out the last vehicle, and a headshot finished her off. Alas, a short lived career (author's note - the career pilot's name had been chosen as "Butcher", apparently that meant the type of ending in her future, rather than her ability to kill).

    So, Gopher's up next!

    *Edit* - also, 1 skull my ass. 8 mechs + 4 vehicles?

    Yeah, those starts can be rough.

    I started a new career thanks to all this talk and all I've got are (all stock):
    * 1x Vindicator
    * 1x Panther
    * 1x Commando
    * 1x Jenner
    * 1x Spider

    So when the Heavy Metal crate showed up I popped that sucker open and embraced my new Phoenixhawk like a long lost love. :P

    So far the worst that's happened is I've had the panther cored out by a single lucky shot to the rear--somehow the pilot survived but needed 72 days in the medbay to recover.

    And I ended up in one of those training run scenarios, so 3 lights and my Vindicator vs. an Enforcer, a Crab, a Commando, and a Panther. They had full armor. My little ducklings did not. :P

    But hey, not reward for keeping them all alive, so I just used them as the anvil while my Vindicator swept in from the rear to finish them off. Those lights served their purpose and even managed to kill a Crab and a Panther before they were obliterated. Which left me dancing with the Enforcer and Commando, but I finished them off without even taking any structure damage.

    Sorry employers, you'll need to find some more recruits after I got done "training" the last set...

Dragged my broken ass mechs over there, Dekker managed to take out one before running out of machine gun ammo (dang it I should have went with full instead of half.) Put that ammo in the legs! Any crit in the CT will blow your CT up.

    AC/10s also are pretty heavy for the damage they do unless you get the +damage versions which are useful for head-capping. I'd consider backing off to UAC/5++ (if you can get a few) or AC/20s.

    That looks like one hell of a mission though.

    And yeah, SRM carriers MUST die before they enter their range against you because holy fuck they will wreck your face. As you unfortunately discovered!

    Ran out my first Career run with a "Green" rank. I don't know what that means, but u assume it means I could do better. The score was never really my goal... just wanted to play as many flashpoints as I could.

    Second career started me off with an Enforcer, a Vindicator, and Jenner and both Commando varieties. My goal this time is to field all the "Robotech" mechs in my company for the whole career. :)

    How viable is a "no assault mech" run in this game?

  • OrcaOrca Registered User regular
    It's quite viable, but you'll be moving around quite a bit more and relying on mediums to distract with high evasion and probably using a Marauder or two at long range for DPS.

    A Phoenixhawk with the right loadout can absolutely shred the rear arc of an assault too. And if it's the LosTech variant, you can even do so without overheating.
