There definitely needs to be more "third person" VR games. I believe that RTS could be a successful niche in VR too.
There was an RTS-adjacent game that came out really early for PSVR that I really enjoyed but it got shut down pretty quickly, presumably because it didn’t do the numbers the studio wanted.
It was really deep into its own aesthetic and I think many people probably noped out of like, your team is made up of disturbing yokai-style monsters but man it worked for me. It was like playing the 3-d chess game on the Millennium Falcon but real-time, weirder, and bigger, and most critically it worked super well mechanically. Essentially like a tabletop game table maybe six, seven meters on a side you could walk “into” and get up close to see what was happening in a given part, give orders, etc. Keeping track of three or four simultaneous battles was no problem.
Hopefully somebody will give that style of game the cheerful-colors, blocky-shapes, happy-noises treatment that gets curious players in the door long enough to spend funbux and make a studio pursue it more seriously.
For comfort I just have one of amazons $15 gel sport headbands on. It works so well and I can wear the headset for hours.

I wish the Cities Skylines didn't look so half assed. I think God view style games could be a lot of fun. How cool would Black and White be if you were actually a floating god in the world? RTS would be the same.
there is a Space Fleet commander game I'd love to check out. You're commanding your fleet from the bridge of your flagship that is also in the battle, and can go look out the windows to see the battle progress, or use fancy 3d maps.

Yeah, I played and enjoyed that one. Arguably, diorama doesn't really fit what Hellbade does, if I think about it - but while VR isn't integral to it, or to most third-person titles in VR, the medium gives the environments a wonderful tactility, for want of a better word. It makes me wonder what a VR version of Dark Souls would feel like.

I was thinking, we should set up a chart of all the Quest owners on the forums. That way when someone new gets a quest we can go down the list of existing owners to hand out referral codes so all new and existing owners get some referral store credit.
Can set up a google drive link or something and I'll happily include it in the OP.
Also, there is a good Fanatical Quest game bundle going on right now that's far cheaper than you'd ever get directly from the Quest store: https://www.fanatical.com/en/bundle/fanatical-quest-vr-bundle
I have an extra Ghost Giant key if anybody is interested. Oh, and if you buy this bundle make sure to jump onto the Rift side of the store after redeeming all the keys to get the ones that are crossbuy for free on PC. Finally, the bundle comes with a free PC game because as part of Fanatical's winter sale any purchases of 10 bucks or more result in a free game. So, if you also use the Zero Caliber coupon you get a second free PC game from Fantatical.
What're some good games to play in VR with a HOTAS and pedals? I've got Elite: Dangerous but the grind is too heavy. I've got Sublevel Zero and House of the Dying Sun for lighter weight cockpit stuff.
Is there a really solid mech sim that supports HOTAS+P?
I'm not sure there is such a thing as a Light HOTAS game.
I guess Star Wars Squadrons is the lightest one I've played.
also check out Vox Machinae and Iron Rebellion(not sure of hotas support)
Mechwarrior 5 has a VR mod out now

DCS: World is free with two starter planes (a trainer P-51 and an Su-25). There is kind of a grind, though, in that you have to learn how to keep yourself from falling out of the sky.
Vox Machinae supports HOTAS, sort of. Aiming is done with your head, so you don’t use a stick.
It looks like I may be getting a nice windfall from the two fantasy football leagues I'm about to win.
I'm very interested in a Quest 2. Would it work fine for playing Alyx?
My PC is decent but not amazing. I'm willing to accept my visuals may not be the best as long as the controls are sufficient for games like that.
I feel like I'm always try to push the Quest 2...
The thing is great, really high resolution. Almost on par with the Reverb 2 and higher than the Index. Index has the highest FOV and Reverb is equal with Quest 2.
The best parts are no external cameras needed and it's wireless from the desktop using Virtual Desktop or Airlink (My suggestion is VD but it costs $20).
You can use the Quest via USB with the desktop as well if you don't have strong wifi.
Also the Quest itself has a cpu so you can play games directly from the headset, it has its own library. Check out the DrBeef games, all free VR conversions if you own the original games.
What are the specs of your desktop?
The quest display is like trying to drive 4k, little bit less but it's taxing on the system, I guess with the async the headsets use you want to hit a minimum 36fps (72hz) but 45fps (90hz) is better. Alyx while looking amazing, is actually very well optimized thankfully.
EDIT:
For the other Flight sim question, yeah DCS and Squadrons are what I mostly play. DCS def has the learning curve though hahahha.

My PC is-
Ryzen 5 3600
Rx 5600 xt
16gb ram and a couple ssd's, an nvme drive being my game drive.
Not great but I feel like it could play Alyx at a pretty decent level.
And I do have a good wifi setup so it's nice to know I wouldn't necessarily need the link cable.
We have finally set up our index and beat our first sabers today. It was fun. I was kind of surprised that my gaming experience was more helpful than my partners actual dancing experience but I can understand that there is a barrier to figuring out how the game abstracts interactions.
We're a little worried about the lenses and our glasses. I scrolled the lens depth out as far as it goes to be safe and we haven't taken off the plastic film (for whatever tiny sense of safety that provides short term).
I'm thinking of getting prescription lenses for my partner with a much higher prescription. I need to test it still, but I think I might be able to go without my glasses myself.
i picked up that, superhot, and moss on steam. and a few things from a build your own bundle fanatical is running so i imagine we'll be covered for a while. So now I'm part of the gang!
Been talking with Steam support and finally did an RMA on my right index controller. Hopefully that'll help fix the tracking issues I've been having with it. So no VR for me until the replacement arrives. Also, got prescription lenses for my Index and they're alright. They're kind of only really in focus directly ahead, so you can't really side-eye any text or anything. Still, I do think it's an improvement. Also ended up doing a slight mod to my face gasket. Heated it up the plastic frame over the stove and then pressed it against my face so it'd reform to a shape that actually fit me. Obviously it doesn't go all the way back in anymore, but I ordered some small magnets and basically added a couple of them to the spots where they magnetized into the headset in order to build a little standoff and now it fits. Only issue I'm running into now is finding a configuration that feels good with the strap and backpiece. I think I'm getting there, but again, my big dumb head is making it kind of a pain.
Managed to finally convince my wife that a Quest 2 purchase was a good idea (been eyeing VR for a while).
I see all the posts about games, so all good there with ideas, but what have people done for making it more comfortable?
I've seen different straps or face covers. Do people have things they've done/recommend?
We got some replacement silicone face covers that helped me a lot on comfort, and Oculus sent us one for free later one too; not sure if they are including those by default now or what.
We also got a replacement strap, an Orzero adjustable. Definite improvement, more comfortable and much easier to adjust which was a big factor in getting it, my youngest had some trouble resizing the original setup. There's probably better ones out there but this works fine for us and wasnt expensive.
Finally set up my Quest 2 over the weekend but mostly spent it trying to figure out where stuff was located and also messing around with free demos (which broke a lot because I'm sitting in bed) and watching Youtube in VR. My wifi isn't strong enough to run PC stuff smoothly on this thing via Airlink, so I might have to try getting one of those cables I've heard so much about and mess around with the PC games I own that have VR support.

You can do a good search for 3rd party cables and lots of Reddit posts where people give great cables that are a third the price. I picked up a right angle cable that is quite long for maybe $30.

Can any of the Quest 2 folk recommend good free stuff for it? My dad bought my mom one for Christmas -- neither one are tech savvy at all but I helped them get it set up, and right now they're mostly messing around with the free stuff. It's hard for me to search around for them since you have to wear the headset to browse and such, so I was hoping for some recommendations!
I'll also take any cheap non-game experiences too, since she would probably be interested in that.
You can probably buy stuff via the phone app or pc software
I know there's specifically stuff that is only on the Quest 2 storefront that's not on the desktop PC Oculus storefront (because Facebook hates PC VR), so I'm assuming they're fairly separate now? Is there a way to browse the Quest 2 catalog on desktop?
Awesome! That helps with the browsing for sure. If anyone has any specific recommendations on the free stuff I'm still game for that! It's hard to tell what the experience actually is with just screenshots -- the proof is definitely in the trying with VR.
Wife and I are thinking of dipping our toes into VR, mostly for beat saber as a means of working out without feeling like we are working out.
The Meta Quest feels...weird? Like I have a nice beefy PC and I hate handing myself over to Zuckerburg like that, but it feels like the best option since I don't have a ps4
