I played it. It doesn't do a lot of hand holding, but then again it is the sixth mission in the game. It also bugged me that SMGs seemed to have less spread and better range than LMGs. I enjoyed it though, even though it took me well over an hour to beat the mission.
Are you being punished somehow? :? I'd think working on a Disgaea game was practically mandatory.
Unless they've got you tied up with more PSP games or a certain other PS2 RPG that I'm still hoping for.
Well I did get to join in on the final script reading party (in fact, they pretty much rely on me to be at all of those since I'm the best grammar/consistency guy in the company) but we only have one person doing the actual edits on each game, and since the other guy worked on Disgaea 2 he got this one. I am at work on my own stuff, but obviously my lips are sealed
Man, I didn't even know the demo was out. I just found it on Live last night, downloaded it and stayed up way too late playing it. I have to say, most of the criticisms are valid. The camera control stick is too sensitive, and trying to determine LOS is a chore, made worse by the fact that there's no takebacks for moving, so if I move only to find a pole blocking my shot, I'm screwed. Also, I probably missed something, but when I transformed in to a werewolf and ran up next to a guy, I expected to be able to claw the crap out of him, but didn't have the option.
You know what? I still got to fireball an SS soldier and blow up some tanks with bazookas. I put my LMG guys and sniper on ambush fire and just slaughtered the SS as they popped out from cover. I had a blast and I'm definitely getting this game. It's got flaws, but I think I'll be able to look past them for the awesome.

Your MS claw attacks can only be done if you don't move. Otherwise, unarmed melee attacks are only available when you don't have any weapons/ammo.

So in order to ruthlessly maul someone as a werewolf you have to wait for them to walk up to you, or walk up to them, shoot them in the face, then let them shoot back, then claw them?

Yeah, I knew about MS attacks. Honestly, no MS Attacks after moving is one of the bigger flaws in the game, I think. I really had to want to fireball that SS soldier, because honestly, it woulda been easier to gun him down. But I really wanted to see the fireball. It is damn powerful though, so I'll reserve judgement until I can better determine if the no-move balances the power. Still, it should be easier to claw a guy, dangit!
Also, Ambush Cover being less powerful than a normal attack is kinda weak in my opinion. I know it's done for game balance, but it still kinda sucks. If my LMG is trained and waiting, I should definitely be killing guys with it.
Still getting this day one though. I've been wanting something like this for a while now.

I'm going to wait for impressions myself...I really don't mind if the game is average, I liked the demo enough and I've been looking for a new SRPG. Though I really can't buy another $60 game at this point in time probably wait for a price drop.
I finally tore myself away from GTA long enough to try this demo. I really wanted to love it, but in the end I'm just not sure if I'll get it. As everyone else has said, the camera is way too sensitive and everything else feels clunky.
Is there at least a way to invert the camera axes?
Weapon ranges seem really short, limiting the use of snipers. Though I guess that's also good since you cannot be sniped from the other side of the map.
I'm also a bit concerned about how scripted the missions are. I can see myself playing through a mission once to see what happens, then replaying it with optimal positioning to ambush scripted reinforcements.
I'll probably end up pre-ordering it, just because it will be impossible to find later.
So if I don't have a 360 yet I should probably still pick this up since it'll rocket upwards of $80+ after a few months right?
I doubt it. Operation Darkness looks like a flawed, but enjoyable game ala SMT: Devil Summoner and that game can be had on eBay for pretty reasonable prices ($30-$35). Not every Atlus game becomes uber rare.

I'd say that it is weak, unequivocally.
It looks to be a tactical game made with a lot of sensibilities from the western tactical games, but with such an enormous body of prior art to reference, maybe they intentionally didn't want the lie-and-wait approach to be so effective.
But then, I think about the kind of things you have to pull in order to win at some of those great classics at the higher/unfair difficulties, and it still comes across as weak to me.

I really liked this, definitely worth a rental at least.
I had some fun with the demo, but I had some pet peeves with it. Sending in surprise reinforcements really annoys me in Strategy games so I hope that's not something that happens frequently in the game. Likewise, I thought the demo level was overly big which meant a lot of boring moving about (which took longer than it should have due to the camera and the large party size).
The camera was just terrible. Simply pulling the camera back a bit, maybe giving me a Fire Emblem-style view, would have improved the game drastically. It's ridiculous that line of sight is so important, and yet you struggle to see your enemies in the same screen as your own guys.
Yeah, I'd say that the criticisms that have been brought up so far are pretty accurate. I tried the demo yesterday and the camera is one of the worst I've ever seen. Whoever set that up needs to be dragged out and shot... except for the fact that guns have a range of 12 feet. Line of sight, for being so important, seems almost pixel-perfect in it's determination, despite the fact that this is a grid-based game. And having dozens of enemies pop up midway though is not cool when not only does it take forever to move across the map, but mission-critical characters can be killed in a couple hits.
So, while I love the concept, I'm gonna have to agree with others that I'll wait to hear how the full game goes before getting it.
I hated this demo. It destroyed all the excitement I had for the game. Why do I have to run in a fucking straight line for fucking like 30 minutes before I can even get into some action. Then, I can't see the enemies at the same time as my guys. I ended up having to use a god damn piece of notebook paper to generally figure out where the hell everyone was.
Would it be so hard to include a fucking overhead map?
Any word on a PAL release of this? Had a crack at the demo (well, a few cracks. Took me a fair few attempts to actually beat the thing), and despite it's obvious flaws it seems like just the sort of game I'd play.
Yeah, I like the presentation of a FF Tactics style on the 360 but seriously you are not selling me on this game when I have to most half a dozen of my guys for the first 15 minutes just to fight three guys that die in a couple of turns.
I'll wait for a full review and people's recommendation before I even think about getting this game.
Come on, you didn't have fun running your guys forward for fucking 4-5 turns before getting into combat?
If they cut down the map size by like 1/3 to 1/2 this game would be awesome.
Agreed. I'm hoping the demo map was unusually large and the rest of the game features smaller maps, but I'll wait until I hear some first hand experiences of the full game.
Personally I'm glad the battlefield is the size that it is. Given the ranges of the weapons on offer, and the fact that you'll be fighting tanks and dragons regularly if the pr is to be believed, it would seem strange to have the action limited to a smaller stage, and might not even work.
A couple of turns to get your forces organised and in position hardly damages it too much.
So it seems as though this game will be region locked after all, with no PAL publisher in sight.
Makes me wonder what the fuck they were thinking putting the demo up on Live.
Wow, that's really annoying. Earlier on, Atlus said they were going to make it region free, but I guess they changed their mind. Oh well, that changes my status from probably not buying it now but maybe picking it up used later on to never buying it (owns an Asian 360).
Atlus' webpage just posted a blog about the localization.
Seems like the main villains are vampires, not Hitler.
Lots of historic/fictional cameos, on the bright side('Herbert East'?).
Cousin of the Re-animator? :P
Yeah, the demo was a little underwhelming for me. It's nice to see something different location-wise in the genre, but this really didn't convince me to go out and buy the game.
Technically the PS3 is the same at the 360, it's just that all games released so far are region free (afaik), and it looks like it will be that way indefinitely, but its entirely possible that some future releases might be region locked.

Wow, so I finally played the demo and..jesus christ on a cracker someone kill the guy who was in charge of the camera.
Seriously, I had to fight just to find where all my guys were. Maybe there was a map view I was missing.
Also I played the game for a good hour and just as I felt comfortable and was taking down the tanks one of them rolled over a main guy and it was game over.
Flawed FLAWED game I love the concept though so I'm not totally put off to buying it but I'll definitely have to wait and see.

I wonder if it will touch on Japan's involvement in WW2. You know, Pearl Harbor, Chinese holocaust, Nazi sympathising.
Or if it will just be: hey look at Anglos killing Anglos, what nothing to see here *whistle*
