It'd be impossible to guess from using microsoft products that the company is doing well.

Yeah I went on downdetector.com and found this, so I believe my concerns are currently legit, at least in the US of A:

I don't do any dev so I wouldn't know about that but the operating system has been unreliable to me and the office suite just barely functions on any computer I try it on.

Featurewise their office cloud stuff seems 10-5 years behind.

One week ago: HR sends email out to everyone asking for t-shirt/polo sizes so they can get company shirts

    Me: *sends size*

Today: HR sends another email out with a giant list of people asking for shirt sizes again

Me: "Fucking, okay, guess she never got it" *forwards first email passive-aggressively*

Alright, I'm pretty settled on my course of action, which is that I'm going to save for the next few months, then cash out my 401k and see if I can get these two projects I've been working on to release state. I've also got some other freelance work lined up that I could pursue if I'm not seeing early returns on either of those projects.

I'm also maybe considering seeing if I could convince my dad to make a legitimate investment in my company, but that plan of action has all the downsides you might imagine.

Doing it this way, rather than moving right on to a new job, means I'm a lot more flexible and can be a lot more straightforward in negotiating with my boss, which is something I really appreciate.

The only reason I'm so comfortable with cashing out on my 401k, of course, is simply because my actual retirement plan remains what it has always been; inheritance.

My Dad has been out of work for um, 1.5 years now? He's 60 so not quite retirement age but they live pretty frugally and he was a CEO/senior VP level person for like 20 years so im assuming there's a lot of savings there

He owns two homes in Sausalito, for reference. He's solidly a multi-millionaire. I just don't know what his mortgage situation is like currently re: him being willing to take risky investments on his failson.

i mean if your dad has money and is willing to help you in any regard it probably makes more sense tax wise for him to gift you some money (and, if needed, pay him back) than for you to cash out the 401k which is just bad for tax reasons
