Pro Tools LE MIDI setup

Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone has some experience with Pro Tools and can help me figure something out.

In the past of only used software synthesizers (reason, minimoog, etc) which i've controlled with an m-audio oxygen keyboard via usb in pro tools, so i've really never used the midi ports on my mbox2.

I just bought a microKORG and its my first external midi synthesizer. I've got it setup fine using 1/4" cables but want to get it setup using midi. (more editing options / plus the ability to listen to drum tracks and practice at the same time without having the track record enabled)

From what I've gathered I'll need to connect the midi out of the mbox to the korg's in, and the korg's midi out to the mbox's in...

I set it up no problem on an instrument track to record the midi signal, however I'm not hearing any audio from the korg... so while the korg is working as a controller, pro tools is not using the korg's internal sound

sorry for all the confusing language, does this make sense? anyone know what i'm trying to get at?

thanks for any help

Double check that the midi output from protools is being routed correctly. It might default to system MIDI output rather than the output of the mbox. You should be able to set it for the track, the song, or as the default for your environment.

I don't have any experience with protools LE specifically, so I can't tell you where exactly to go.

Protools won't "use" the sounds of the microKORG. What it will do is play midi out to the device, and the device will respond by playing its own audio.

the easiest way to troubleshoot midi is to take audio routing out of the scenario, so plug headphones into the microKORG. Then, make sure you're sending a midi track to your mBox midi out, on ch1. Set the microKORG to respond to midi ch 1. That *should* work. It's not hard, it's just very specific.

ahh interesting that makes sense, can't wait to get home and try that...

so does that mean I'll need to still setup an additional aux track to play the midi that is sent to the korg, or is all that done in a single instrument (midi + aux) track?

korg sends mids control info to protools so it can be recorded (or manually inputted with pencil tool), pro tools then sends midi data back to korg, and korg returns audio signal based on inputted midi

since audio is not actually routed through midi, this means i still need to use the 1/4" cables?

so to have it all setup as i've described i'll be using line and midi cables from the korg to mbox?

    does all that sound right?

    thanks again
