Saving the World 3 days at a time. Zelda: Majora’s Mask. (56K Beware!)

ArtoriaArtoria Registered User regular
edited May 2007 in Games and Technology
The year was 2000 the System wars had cooled down Sony ruled the landscapes with not one but two consoles, and a plucky system called the Dreamcast was fighting for survival. It seamed that everyone had forgotten about one system that was ahead of it’s time and made the analog stick standard on all gaming systems since it’s introduction, the N64. Nintendo was still a year form introducing the Gamecube and they need a game to send the N64 out with a bang. They looked back at the N64 library and found that one game stood out from everything else and demanded a sequel. This game was the one that drove more people to buy an N64 than anything before it and is considered by many to be the greatest game ever made. That game was The Legend of Zelda: the Ocarina of Time. So the masterminds at Nintendo set to work on a game that would be a sequel to this masterpiece and a game that would have an ominous position in the Franchise. The Legend of Zelda Majora’s Mask.

mm-box.jpg

A new chapter begins

Majora’s Mask picks up right where Ocarina of Time left off. Link having completed his quest left Hyrule to search for an “old dear friend” who had left him after his adventure. When he and Epona wandered into some woods they encounter a boy wearing a very funky mask accompanied by 2 fairies. He spooks Epona causing her to buck you off and he runs away with her and the Ocarina of Time. He also curses you with a mask turning you into a Deku Scrub.

Cute yet depressing at the same time.
dekulink.jpg

You then have to give chase. When you do you learn that Epona is gone. NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Remember the good times
linkepona.jpg

And that you are screwed because he ain’t turning you back. Also one of the fairies “tatl” gets separated from her brother and agrees to help you. Now Tatl is not like Navi at all. She’s not nice in fact she insults you every time you asks for her help “what you don’t know what a (insert name here) is?!?”. Well at least she is not screaming "HEY! LISTEN!" in your ear every 5 seconds. With this rude little thing in tow you give further chase where you meet up with an old acquaintance. The Happy Mask salesman.

How did you get here? And why did you rip off Mario's face?

maskseller.jpg

He tells you that some Jerk named “skull kid” stole a mask from him. So he tells you if you get “your precious Item back” as well as the mask that he will turn you back to normal.

God I hate this jerk!
SkullKid.jpg

You go out into a town with a large clock simply named “Clock Town” . You run around, play a game of tag, climb an observation tower to look through a telescope and find that Skull kid is hanging out on top of the clock tower. You have to wait until “the day of the festival” to confront him. You hen learn that he plans to crash the moon into the world destroying everything. First your Horse and Ocarina and now the world. This guy is a jerk. You get the Ocarina back and the other fairy tells you something about a Swamp, some mountains and a couple of other places. You then have a trippy flashback where you play the song of time and go back in time 3 days. There you visit the Mask salesman and he teaches you a song to turn you back and you get your first mask the Deku Mask. But he is very pissed that you didn’t have his mask. So you start out to see what all this Swamp stuff was about.

Welcome to your doom!
Moon.jpg

What the Heck?

Majora’s mask was met with a mixed reception. On the one hand many praised the game for being more difficult and having a much darker storyline. And of course many said that the 4 Meg RAM made the game look better then Ocarina of Time. Also the masks gave the game new game play elements such as using Flowers to glide around when using the Deku mask or using the Zora Mask to Swim.

However others say the game was too difficult and the new time limit was frustrating to no end. Also when you go back in time all the events that happened when you were playing are reset and undone. You are also warped back to Clock town. The only proof you have that you completed them is the major items you gained and songs you learned. Going back in time is also the only way to save the game. This is a drastic change from OOT where you could save at any time you wanted. Most people complained that this made completing dungeons difficult. Many even said even the reverse song of time that slowed the flow of time in game did not slow it down enough to finish tasks. Others just said that the game was too depressing to play. Another criticism of the game is that many of the assets from Ocarina of time were shamelessly re-used in this. Many people when they heard of a new Zelda game thought that it would have new looking NPCs and not the re-use the same characters from OOT.

One other thing that Majora’s Mask introduced that has since been a mixed back for the Zelda series is this guy

He scares for me for unknown reason.
tingle.jpg

Tingle the 35 year old want to be fairy. He would show up in various parts of the game hanging form a balloon. He would sell you maps and give you good wishes with his strange little dance and chant. He may or may not have a basement full of slave boys. No one who has tried to find out has returned to tell if this is true or not.

However it also gave us one of Links most bad ass incarnations Fierce Deity/Oni Link.

Pure ownage
onilink.jpg

Also the game came out at the end of the N64 life cycle at the point most people had packed up their N64 and moved to new pastures. because of this the game did not get the wide spread Exposure that it's predecessor did.

A second chance
MMart.jpg

Majora’s mask however got a second chance when the Legend of Zelda Collector’s Edition came out. That package contained Zelda 1, 2, Ocarina of Time, Majora’s mask and a Demo of Wind Waker on one disc. Many who had not played the game before got a chance to experience one of the most underrated Zelda games to date.

The face of Evil
majoramask.jpg

Why did you make this thread?

A good question that deserves an equally good answer. Well mainly because I started playing the game for the first time this week. I’m playing it on the Collector’s Edition on Gamecube. Yes I know it has some type of sound issue but I have no idea what it might be as I have not noticed anything. I just beat the first dungeon. I am amazed by the game and how good it is. I was frustrated at first with the 3 day time limit (1 in game hour equals 1 minute) However with the song of time reversed it helped me get over that frustration. And I thought I would share my new found love for this game. That and just to see a good old Majora’s Mask discussion as well.

“So what are ya waiting for talk already?

I like this game. Better off playing it on the Gamecube or you know what because of the goddamn vaseline-o-vision of the N64, but I own it anyway, because I'm a Zelda nut. It's no Ocarina, and it's a crying shame it has only 4 main dungeons, but there just something about the atmosphere, about the mood of sadness that pervades the entire game, that makes it special.

Or you could take the dive and get the Collector's Edition of Zelda that has Zelda 1 , Zelda 2 the Adventure of Link, Ocarina of Time And Majora's Mask. It plays on your Wii and you can have it right now.

Could someone please elaborate on this 'sound problem' I heard about with the collectors edition?

I would be playing the game on the Wii if I did get it (never completed OOT either).

How does the GC controller work for this game and OoT?
Is the sound problem grating? Does it still exist when played on the Wii?

Sound skips when you travel between areas. Mildly annoying. GC controller isn't ideal, but it's workable.

All in all, I most prefer to play the original, but I seem to be unusual for that.

For a long time I was scared to play this game because time limits in general freak me out and the concept of beating a game in a certain amount of time didn't sound very appealing (how I got through Pikmin I'll never know). Eventually someone explained the time system in more detail and I started a game on the GCN collectors disc last summer.

The first three days are hella stressful, even using a strategy guide. How the hell did anyone do this without one? After the first three days, the game took a much better pace and I quite enjoyed the amount that I played. I only beat the first dungeon before I was distracted by something and I haven't played it since. I would definitely like to finish it some day.

    I got the following masks:
    Great Fairy mask
    Bremen mask
    Kamaro's mask
Blast mask (my favourite for some reason)
    Mask of Truth
    Mask of Scents
All Night Mask (I think... I know it was for sale, I can't remember if I bought it)
    Keaton mask
    Kafei's mask
    Postman's mask
    Deku mask

Not bad for one dungeon, right?

I only ever played through this game once because, as a kid I was always creeped the fuck out by the giant glaring moon thing. I completed all the mask quests though!

I tried to play it through again but I get too stressed about the time limit and go back to playing OoT again.

I LOVE the Anju/Kafe quests. The end to it is so beautiful and sad at the same time...

When I was putting together a checklist of all the heart piece locations, there was one piece in particular that took me a while to find. That could possibly be the one you're missing.
In the transition area from Mountain Village to Snowhead, there's a piece resting on a small island far out from the rest of the map. You have to use the Lens of Truth to see the invisible blocks used to reach it, and you need the Scarecrow Song to make the last jump.

    It's pretty easy to miss.

I played this game for the first time earlier this year and I was a little dissapointed after all the hype on here for it. I loved Ocarina and from what I heard that was just a warm up for MM, but alas it was not to be. I found the game frustrating in places and infuriating in others. I don't think I have ever gotten as worked up over a game as this one, even when I was younger.

I can see why people like it, and I think it has an awesome concept, but the execution didn't work for me. I only got a few masks, and once I beat the game I dusted off my hands and moved on to The Wind Waker.

I didn't dig any deeper than I had to to finish the game. I never even found out what the Mask of Scents was for even.

I think people are either Ocarinas or Majoras.

I think a lot of people saw the 3 day system and freaked out. I wouldn't want every Zelda game like this, but I thought it was a unique concept that made the game what it was. this wasn't a "Complete the dungeons and fight the evil" game. It was a game based on helping people. The whole game is about that, up to the very end.

To be honest, I played this when it came out up to the second dungeon and then quit. For four years. At that time I was in College and decided one summer that I was going to beat the damn thing, so I dug out my Nintendo Powers and dug into the game, getting every mask, etc. And I have to say that it was worth it.

Majora's mask is unique in that it presents so many strange, odd things that are never explained and make no sense. Like the moon itself. Or the mask salesman. WTF is with him? I think he's evil.

But I have to say, the thing I love more about Majora's Mask than anything else is the music. I think the soundtrack is the most evocative and emotional of all the Zelda sountracks. There's something so sad about the music that just fits so well with the tone of the game. I could listen to that soundtrack 24/7. It's perfect...

I certainly didn't ignore this game when it first came out. One of these days I'll replay it. I just wish I knew what happened to the final heart piece I'm missing in my game file. I've checked everywhere and it's not giving me my 20th heart. Argh!

This was among the last three or five heart pieces that I was missing when I finally gave up on finding everything without the help of a guide. I definitely have this one.

Am I the only one who found this game easier then ocarina?
I only beat Ocarina 2 months ago and I beat Majora in the first year.
What do people find so hard about it?
