Phantom Doctrine at 80% off looks like a pretty good deal for "XCOM but it's the Cold War". Went ahead and jumped on it, but anybody have firsthand impressions, things to know ahead of time, etc.?

Awesome, thanks! Yeah, I dimly remembered someone recommending it but couldn't find the post. This style of gameplay with more of a focus on stealth and a clean break-in/getaway sounds right up my alley

Mine too, it sounds so awesome. Got it in Humble Choice, got it installed even (so not just chucked in the main backlog), just need to actually, you know, play it. Which is more of a time/energy issue than anything else.
This is the Police is kinda good, I just wish it'd let me run the fucking police station and figure out the game, and then launch into STORY MODE.
It seemed right up my alley, but lost a lot of appeal when you find out every day is scripted to go the same, and the endgame mechanics get pretty frustrating.
The sequel is a hard pass, though. Absolutely dire.
@jclast, I was getting that error from XCOPS on my laptop (which should have been able to run it) and my desktop (most certainly able to run it.) In both cases, updating my graphics driver cleared up the message.
Updated driver downloaded now - it's clearly been too long since I bought a new PC game. Thanks!
And it seems to have worked. Things are still slow (though it being turn-based helps me not care about that and I'm knowingly playing with a below specs laptop so I've only got myself to blame), but I haven't crashed again and I'm 3 missions in!
So far I really like the multiple breach and encounter mission structure, but I definitely miss taking turns as a team. It was always a bummer to miss a shot, but in XCOM: EU and XCOM 2 I could (try to) recover from a miss. Here I'm just eating telepathy (I picked the Progeny to go after first) on the enemy's next turn when I whiff.

I think one of the things that drives me nuts is that they imply heavily that it's possible to just play it straight and not do crooked shit, and then it gave me a game over because I wasn't being crooked and I'm like, "Uh okay"
So I guess I'll just play Jax Teller: Police Chief as best I can! But that sounds like a far more stressful time than what I thought I was in for!
@Pixelated Pixie thinks she is funny...
Thank you very much for this NWN module, I am currently playing in a Descent into Avernus game so this should be very interesting to see how it ties into the setting!

So I just bought NWN during the recent sale, and I don't know much about it. What are these modules you speak of?
And this descent into avernus game you're talking about, is that another module? Or is that some kind of multiplayer server in the game?

That was kinda my experience, too. I started off really liking This is the Police, but it feels like several otherwise minor issues compounded over time. The management aspect is neat, and smartly integrates moral quandaries into gameplay decisions, but gets stingy with your resources and piles on too many conflicting goals with poor tutorializing (I didn't actually know how to suspend a murder investigation when I was pressured to). That it's drawn out over such a long timeframe means it gradually becomes a tedious chore.
The premise is initially strong enough to power through it, what with the protagonist trying to balance the need to follow corrupt orders with actually doing his job, and at its best it reminded me a little of Papers, Please. The problem here is the line between dark and grimdark is thin, and the game gradually shifts from one to the other. You can ignore a couple "requests" before they get trigger-happy, but it really doesn't seem to matter if you actually play as straight as you can or go full Breaking Bad; everything just steadily gets worse anyway. I just stopped playing at some point and couldn't muster up the energy to continue.
I'm not opposed to a story of a downward spiral - Kane & Lynch, Spec Ops: the Line, the Roche path in Witcher 2 - and the right game absolutely could tackle institutional corruption while still being entertaining. This game has good ideas, but it had trouble sustaining my interest over a 20-something hour management sim.

This pretty much sums up why I lost all interest in it. I was interested in a police management sim. Not a police management sim with a plot. At least in Tyranny I can get different endings. This one is 'everything is still shit, but [slightly different outcome here]'.
You know what's actually pretty great? When I auditioned for (and recorded) Torque in #ChimeraSquad, I didn't know that she was a snake. I am nearly certain that omission was purposeful, because if I had seen that she was a snake, my read, as well as many others I'd think, would have been very different. Sometimes you don't need to know absolutely EVERYTHING about a character, b/c you can easily end up unwittingly boxing yourself in due to your preconceived ideas. All that said, it was a masterful omission, in my opinion.
Also...the shock on my face when I realized......priceless

This is why it is not always the actor's fault in a subpar performance.

Remnant: From the Ashes ($24) just released its expansion Swamps of Corsus for $10
Both games I recommend.

Descent Into Avernus is a campaign for the pen-n-paper game. It's all in the same world as NWN.

Woohoo! Thank you very much, @Caedwyr. This looks wholesome and relaxed which is definitely a little something I could use these days.

You know whose fault it is? Sand. I hate sand.
There's a perfectly logical reason for it, but I don't think I'd call it a good reason.
