Those Awesome Free Games

Quite a few people here will spend idle minutes or even hours playing some of the great free games out there. A few like Alien Hominid (NSFW) and fLOw even make their way to consoles one way or the other. I started wondering what other games out there hold a special place in your hearts or you feel deserve room on your console's hard drive?

    I'm pretty sure the OP was asking for games to just waste a few spare hours on and here you point him to a game that will consume his life and leave him homeless begging on the street cotner for spare barrels to store his monkey fat in. Nice.

    What was the name of that space exploration game that was made to last for about half an hour, and all the maps were randomly generated? People compared it to 4x solitare.

    If you've ever seen Tremors you will love this game. If you haven't you will still love this game.

    Cortex Command

    testdump000xc5.png

    It's a lot like Soldat. 2D sidescrollin, jetpack/jetboots, lots of guns and death. Has some strategy to it, I guess. You have to dig gold to purchase things that are delivered to you by rocket/dropship. Or you can just order a rocket and crash it onto your enemies head. You can use your 360 controller too 8-) Unfortunately it doesn't have any online multiplayer.

    Albatross18, Korean fantasy golf. It's free to play, though you can buy exclusive gear for real cash if you want to. Otherwise you earn another ingame currency to buy other items. People who open up their wallets might have a slight edge, especially when it comes to reaching shortcuts, but it mostly comes down to player skills, not time or money invested in the game. Homepage is at http://www.albatross18.com/season2/ . If anyone would like to play with me, my ingame nick is FirebrandSwe. I'm on... a little too often.

    s1.jpgs9.jpg

    EDIT: This is a fully English version by the way, if you disregard the large amount of brasilian players. There's also an offline console game for the Wii based on this, called Super Swing Golf.

    Click on the screen, move the mouse up and down to angle the bow, move it left to pull the arrow back and set your power (shown at the bottom right), and release. Keep in mind that you can shoot arrows while still in the air.

    There's no help file! I have a robot and I go and shoot the brain and it dies, or I die and then I control the rocket which crashes and it says buy things and I do but what for and how do I buy them without killing the robot and the rocket first and why bother when I can just shoot the brain and win

    after playing that Jets 'n' Guns that was free a few days ago, i'm in the mood for more side-scrolling space-based shootemups. Something with an R-Type feel. What's legally free and in that mould?

    Press Q+E by default to open the buy menu. There you can choose to send bodies with various armaments on a rocket or dropship. Also, the game is meant for two player splitscreen, only custom maps are properly set up for cpu fights. That's why you can just walk in and kill the other brain.

    The game isn't really complete yet. From the top of the readme: "This work-in-progress version of Cortex Command(tm) is for preview purposes." I just thought it was a very neat game and I've had lots of fun messing around with it. The AI is kinda slow in the beginning. It's pretty easy to just fly in and quickly destroy the brain. If you give the AI a chance though your ass is usually dead. It updates every now and then and I wanted to spread the word on the game ;)

    Keyboard Controls:
    WSAD = movement and aiming
    H = fire
    J = hold for careful aiming
    K = hold and use A and D to switch devices, or W to pick up a device on the ground or reload, or S to drop a device
    L = jetpack
    Y = select next non-brain actor
    U = select prev non-brain actor
    Y + U = select brain (The Buy Menu)
