Honestly I think all these tiny screenshots that make us post and argue for pages at a time are a form of guerrilla viral marketing and then at one point they will fucking blow us all out of the water.
I mean honestly, look at the attention we got/are getting from the postage stamp shots. The world would explode if we released legit media.
They're doing it this way for our own safety.
Unfortunately most of that attention comes from forumites going "they're a fucking joke."
I'd like this game to appear and not suck, and also for 3D Realms to actually acknowledge its existence with a bit of media. As in, media that doesn't look like it's from a novelty collectable postage stamp.
Commemorating 10 years of DNF! Laughing Broussard for second class! Get your shot of game designers not doing any work for first class! And for long-distance international mail, get this picture of some sort of shadow, it could be Duke, or maybe a monster, or possibly a stripper, might-be-possibly doing something in a mess of pixels!
Now they just need to make 998,000,000 more of them and animate. Add some sound, some gameplay, a pinch of nutmeg, and a dash of paprika, and they might have a game.
It makes me wonder if they are building up to something, or if they are just releasing snippets of media in a vain attempt to persuade us that they actually are doing something. I mean what the fuck.
Duke Nukem Forever is one of man's greatest achievements, it's the joke that never dies. Long after John Romero made us his bitch and no one bought Diakatana, DNF is still funny. Let's replay some of the classics shall we,
"The game should not be significantly delayed" – George Broussard, on the switch from the quake to unreal engine, June 15, 1998.
“A good year's to come with Duke Nukem Forever” - 3d Realms Christmas card, 1999
“Coming when it's done in 2001” - 3d Realms Christmas card, 2000
"We wrote it down last quarter substantially, so we've generally already pulled the plug ... we’re hopeful that the team in Dallas will finish the project." -Jeff Lapin from Take-Two, revealing that DNF would not be out 2003
"Take Two needs to STFU imo" – George Broussard response to Take-Two
“There's a lot that's finished. All the guns are finished. Most of the creatures are finished. And as I said, we're just basically pulling it all together and trying to make it fun.” - George Broussard, interview with 1up, January 31, 2006
"The payment of the promissory note is contingent upon the commercial release of such product prior to December 31, 2006." - Take-Two, promising 3d Realms $500k if they could release it by Christmas, June 9, 2006
“Apparently, up to ten major team members have left the company, with multiple departures having occurred as recently as within the past few days.” - Shacknews, Augest 30, 2006
...and on and on. Think those last ones are too current to be funny? Wait a few years.
Let me point out that the last game 3D Realms developed, Shadow Warrior, came out in May 1997. No they did not develop Prey, they were working on a version of Prey that was canceled and then they sold the rights to the project to another company. They have been working soley on Duke Nukem Forever since Prey was canceled (put on hold) in 1999.
Let's look at alittle of what has gone on in the game world since DNF was announced on April 27, 1997.
Half Life 1 and 2 have both been released.
id Software has developed and released 3 games, Quake 2, Quake 3 and Doom 3.
Starcraft 1 was released, developed status as a classic and a subsequent sequel was announced.
Blizzard, id, and Valve are all known in the industry as developers that take their time with things. Let's look at some game systems that have come out in the interm; Playstation 2 and 3, Gamecube, Wii, Xbox, Xbox 360, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advanced, Gameboy Advanced SP, and the Nintendo DS.
Are you beginning to see?! Are you beginning to see their great work?
In 1997, Bill Clinton began his second term in office, the Simpsons entered its 9th season, Microsoft patched Windows 95 for the winnuke exploit. Since that time, I've completed both High School and College, we've mapped the Human Genome, COSMOS HAVE FLAIRED OUT OF EXISTANCE! Behold the punchline that is DNF, I tell you now that 3d Realms are not game developers but the greatest satirists of our times.

The mind boggles...
I dont have exact figures, but I remember reading a 'since DNF was announced' factoid and it was along the lines of 1.2 billion human beings have died or something INSANE. It was a billion something, deaths, births, dunno.
Something with the word billion in it. It was scary.
Oh in 2007 we get this....
I honestly can't wait.
We can do better than that.
The following things have happened since Duke Nukem Forever was announced...

Touche, I nearly cried. I'm glad someone else is taking the time to expose themselves to the full scope of how funny this is.
EDIT: The entire Buffy the Vampire Slayer Series, all created within the scope of the development of one game. I don't know why I find that so mindblowing but I do.
And come this July, the entire Harry Potter book series will have begun and ended its massive publishing cycle, all within the developement cycle of DNF. 'Tis ancient as the hills.
The funniest thing is that nobody actually cares about DNF. The game has never had any real distinguishing features or reasons to look forward to it. As far as anyone can tell it's just a generic FPS that's been sent back to the drawing board a billion times. If it ever does get released I would be extremely surprised if it's even above average.
When this is all over, if any of us are still alive, someone needs to write a Making Of book. It'll make a fortune.

The game has the Duke! Thats enough to be the greatest thing under the sun.

SOMEONE APPLY FOR THAT FUCKING THING! It is your duty as a gamer to infiltrate 3d realms and find out what sinister plot is really unfolding there.
No.
It is a trap.
correction, it is a tarp
But underneath that tarp?
Total trap.
The screen is from the latest Game Informer.
That's the genius of it.
E3? by the time he gets to play it, it'll be.. E7!
(what that even means, i have no idea)
Has to be ASSWESOME!
Does any other FPS has full stages from the campaign as multiplayer maps? 1on1 games were all hide and seek in the buildings.
Quake 1?
Now they just need to make 998,000,000 more of them and animate. Add some sound, some gameplay, a pinch of nutmeg, and a dash of paprika, and they might have a game.
Uh, just about every FPS with multiplayer up until Quake came out with dedicated multiplayer maps?
Each pixel is the size of your dick.
...and on and on.
Oh in 2007 we get this....
I honestly can't wait.
Oh, and there's going to be jokes about how long the development took every 10 steps you take ingame.
It would, but you see, I don't include an if in my statement. The chances of this being a revolutionary game seem slim to none.
At the rate this game is being made...

I dont have exact figures, but I remember reading a 'since DNF was announced' factoid and it was along the lines of 1.2 billion human beings have died or something INSANE. It was a billion something, deaths, births, dunno.
Something with the word billion in it. It was scary.
Just so that I can subconciously keep the development cycle going.
This game cant come out. It just cant. My entire belief system would collapse around me if it came out.
