Let's start with my skills: I'm an amateur, complete rookie.
I got a question I can't seem to figure the answer to; I'm White, it's my turn to move (Black just did the C4 to E5 move). Can I take Blacks Rook AND promote to my Queen in the same move?
I mean, that would be checkmate, right?
Edit:
No, wait, then he can just move his King to E7, right?

Yes? You promote by hitting the end of the field with your pawn, and a pawn taking a piece is no different.

Ohhh, strong nostalgia vibes right now. Totally forgot that the knight had a Star Wars and a Monthy Python reference.

1. you can play online chess against complete strangers at https://lichess.org/
2. I have always always wanted to find a place where I can order a custom chessboard with custom pieces so I can properly recreate Terry Pratchett's amazing concept for Stealth Chess

One of my best friends son just showed some interest in chess (he's 5) greatly increased when he beat me.
I tried to teach him Wu-Tangs wisdom, but it didn't really stick yet.
Seeing him this friday, wonder if he wants to play more
Anyway I played fairly seriously 5-16, in school teams and local teams. Making it to regionals.
But then the point came where I had to study openings and at the time I gave up, and never really played again. Except a short burst when I got internet at home for the first time, and playing some Yahoo Chess.
I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.

My proudest moments in chess were finally figuring out how to avoid the quick KO strategy and making the guy who was 1st on his chess team take four days to beat my ass in chess while at camp.

I...it's hard to tell by the photo but I don't think that's even check? If that's the king on d5, the pawn is pinned to it, but the king itself isn't in any danger.

That's his King on D5. My understanding is, that the King can't make any move that puts him in check? But I guess both D5-D6 and D5-C6 would get him out of trouble... for now.

Yea blacks definitely on borrowed time. White can't chase too effectively just yet and black doesn't have many good moves so I'd probably spend a few turns getting that h1 rook into the mix or Rd8 to get it out of danger and strip that e6 pawn of protection.
Also since it is currently black's turn their only possible king move (they have other pawn moves or Bxa8 possible) is c5/c4/e4 since c6/d6/d4 are covered by your pawns and e5 pawn is protected by bishop.

Long ago, the four pieces lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the King attacked. Only the Queen, master of all four movements, could stop him. But when the board needed her most, she vanished.

I played chess for several years in school, but I never learned the terminology
I just remember EN PAISSANT and would do it whenever i could
It-It's "en passant". It's French. My dad also mentions it whenever he takes anything "en passant", ie. as it is passing in front of him. He is the Big Chess Nerd. He is the one who wins teaches chess to children, as a joke job.
I was interested in chess when I was young and would play it a lot on the computer. In junior high I joined the chess club. When going there on the first day it was just a couple kids that joined to get out of doing something else who only played uno and a teacher who didn't give a shit. That ended my interest with chess.

You're not missing out on much. Chess is just exploring a move graph, it's not very interesting.

Have you ever played with low time controls? The difference between 10-minute, 3-minute and 1-minute is staggering. At the 1-minute level, you don't even need to be the better player to win. You just need to be the faster, slightly more clever player.
The look of existential dread in the eyes of the Barts, each of them knowing that:
- They have been cloned at least seven times
- They are most likely a clone themselves
- They are about to murder or be murdered by their alternate universe counterparts
- If they somehow survive the journey to the other side of the board they will transform into Marge

I remember playing this game and being super pumped for the animations even though it took a fucking year to load.
We had the version on the (few) PC's at the school library back in the day. That got played a lot. Even if we had no idea what we were doing.
Just those animations... just awesome.

It was fun. Played it with another novice, was as entertaining as anything else.
