There's definately room for characters who exhibit more signalling, but that's probably going to require some deeeeep knowledge to not do poorly or offensively.

ways to show this that seem fine:

-show or mention a current or ex-boyfriend
-romantic tension/flirtation with an npc (someone you rescue, a hot enemy, whatever)
-mentorship dialog in a situation where you have to deal with a young gay kid
-character has a lot of gay bros/contacts

in games that have any story, stuff like this comes up, so I think it wouldn't be that hard

    Steam, LoL: credeiki

Gotta say I'm pretty grateful for this thread because while I'll certainly need to run it by folks to make sure I'm not doing something horrible... the "what if X character was a gay guy" mental exercise applied to one of my five-person band members brought up some really interesting drama thoughts. Playing under-privileged hard-working highly-principled gay man with scars off of super-privileged gender-fluid bisexual emotionally-disconnected super-gifted physically flawless man, with both of them kind of being cranky jerks who dislike each other, brings in just sooooo many story ideas before even getting into any other characters or culture or powers or plot or the world around them.

Yeah this thread has made me reconsider avoiding writing gay characters and do more research and be more open minded when it comes to my characters. It's also made me realize how there really isn't much representation out there for gay characters in video games

Timespinner is the only game I've played where nearly all of the cast are from the LGBT community and its not up to the player to choose the sexuality of the main character and their love interest. The main character is who she is and she falls in love with who she falls for.

It's also a pretty fun metroidvania.

How often do you meet anyone's family etc in a lot of games? VN-ish style games maybe, but no one is taking me to home to their family in Division 2. "Here we are, sadly, they are all dead." It feels like a rather narrow subset of games that even have the proper setup to introduce that sort of thing naturally.

Loren the Amazon Princess is another one.

I'd have said very few of them, even if the opportunity exists moreso than in other games. RPGs are one of the types of games that allow for properly introducing characters although notably they bungle the hell out of it.
