Starting conversation with randoms

Yea, title says it...

Usually I generally can start up a conversation with strangers at places I'm familiar with...library, ice rink, arcades...those type of places, because you instantly have common ground to start off with. But I'm not sure how to start a solid conversation at a restaurant which is what I'm asking for. I'm going to be working at a new hole-in-the-wall cafe type of places and the owner wants its employees to be friendly and be able to converse with the customers in a friendly manner. So basically...

H/A, how do you start a solid friendly conversation in a small restaurant type environment?

You can usually generally notice things about their appearances and discern certain things. If someone's wearing a band t-shirt you can be like "oh have you see them live" or "how do you like their new album", often this is stuff that even if you don't know a lot about it the information you can glean from what they tell you can give you enough for a good BS friendly conversation.

When we have our radio talk show and we don't have anything else to really talk about we ususally resort to the typical things everyone knows about--the recent news (celebrity news most likely), the rosie o' donnel fight would be a good place to begin. Also, what movies are coming out.

Also..if you're working at a cafe place that's your starting point.

    "I'd like one suchandsuch please"

"Oh, excellent I'll get that right away. By the way, have you tried the otherthing. Little different from the suchandsuch but not bad."

I mean, I know it's short, campy, and cheesy but it's better than just nodding your head and blinking at them.

It's actually so easy here's your format:

Monday and Tuesday: How was the weekend?
Thursday and Friday: What are you gonna do for the weekend?
Saturday and Sunday: How is the weekend going?
And finally Wednesday: How is the humpday?

And now you're set for every day of the week :P

Amen brother! I used to work at a coffee shack and these 5 things would get me through almost any situation with a non regular. Also after the question is initially asked you can go more in depth if need be by their responses.
