If they're gonna have a probably wedge involved in a story with TIE's with red stripes that's gotta portend the return of the Antilles family drama, right?

With the First Order, I think it's like the "special ops" TIEs, who have the turret gunners

I don't know what that means in post ROTJ Empire though

the tie/sf stripes were on the fuselage though, not the outside of the panels

I finally got to watch the trailer

It feels made for me, up to and including the main motif being "Asteroid Chase" from ESB

That was the first piece of movie soundtrack music that I remember hearing and thinking "Whoa, I want to listen to this out of context"

Squadrons will feature "rich" cosmetic and game-affecting customization options. Players will earn these cosmetics through gameplay exclusively, EA said. That's an important distinction to make, in part because Star Wars: Battlefront II was heavily criticised for its microtransactions.

Flying through that ring should have shredded the squint, though.
Except it has shields, because of course it does. Somehow.

They got the cool red stripes like the 181st squadron in the EU so they maybe get shields too.

Can't wait to name my custom pilot "Pig-O" or "Chubkins" and immediately die at the start of the game like in the first 30 seconds.

It's supposed to be their elite pilots so I assume they're being given slightly more chance at survivability than the average Imperial drone.

Gotta love how Imperial fighter doctrine is completely at odds with, like, reality. (And I'm sure most of the pilots, at least the ones not fresh off their craphole homeworlds/out of the Academy know it.)

"Lighter, more agile craft and superior numbers, training and discipline will carry the day!"
    vs.
"If you survive long enough to make ace, we'll start putting you in a succession of better coffins that more and more closely resemble an actual starfighter."

I think I remember hearing it in Super ESB but that game used basically everything, it was a needlessly direct adaptation

I assume it will be a battle-pass situation. It's become the standard for pvp games at this point for a reason.

My assumption is that Motive will mostly follow what their last game wound up at in terms of payment schemes

Battlefront 2 is on PS+ this month, and the only way to get new weapons is to complete in game achievements

The cosmetic stuff can be bought with earned in game credits or you can buy a premium currency for lootboxes, which are a holdover from launch, and I doubt will be the case in Squadrons at launch based on the language there

They eventually added two bundles that could get you some or All of the cosmetic options, for 15 and 25 bucks respectively iirc

The B wing (in the EU, as far as I can recall) is also the first big foray of the Mon Cal into starfighter design, being Ackbar's baby

Rebels changed that story a bit I think. It could still be ackbar who took the prototype from the show and had it developed into mass production model though.

In the NewU, it's still a Mon Cal design, but according to Rebels was built by an eccentric genius hiding out on a backwater planet with an atmosphere that made it really hard to get into or off of by starship. That way he knew if anyone turned up and didn't crash, they'd be a good enough pilot to test-drive his baby.

That eccentric Mon Cal genius's name, by the way? Quarrie.

The Empire's fascist, and almost by definition fascism is out of touch with objective reality, what did you expect?

to be like, an obnoxious lore nerd for a second

i think it's fine whenever ties are allowed to have shields, hyperdrive, NOS, or whatever (especially in games) but it's especially fine here, since this is post endor and we know they end up with all that stuff eventually. somebody had to be like "ah fuck maybe we should stop losing entire fighter wings to migrating birds" at some point in the timeline, and here makes sense

anyways if this game doesn't let me be a gamorrean it's an abject failure

Can't believe they retconned TIE Bombers to fly backwards. I've been losing my mind since I think Timspork pointed it out.

It is just in that promo image. I think the trailer had then flying the right way. We'll find out in 8 hours when that EA Play thing starts.

The way the TIEs move I bet they could spin around backwards while traveling along a vector. Their center of gravity is dead center of the cockpit after-all.

The bomber is a little chunkier, though so it probably has more weight in the payload pod.
