Since I did the honors of being a Codemasters shill when Race Driver 3 came along, I figured I'd mention Codie's next entry into the world of racing games:
Colin McRae: DiRT
The official name for the US release is just plain "DiRT", and features rally driver Travis Pastrana rather than Colin McRae, because us Yanks won't know who he is.
Colin McRae DiRT ™ FAQ
General
What’s the game called?
The game is called Colin McRae DiRT™, except in the NTSC region, where it’s simply called DiRT™
When’s it out?
The game will be released on Xbox 360 and PC in PAL territries on June 15th 2007 – America will follow very soon after with the game shipping on June 19th 2007. The PS3 version will be slightly later, in the Autumn.
Is there a demo?
Demos have been released for Xbox 360 (download from Marketplace) and PC Link to list of demos. a demo of the PS3 version will be released in the run up to that version;s release in the autumn.
How does it relate to the previous Colin McRae Games?
DiRT is a continuation of the series that started in 1998 and up to now has given rise to 5 previous “main” games and also handheld and mobile versions. However, for the first time, the game has been started from a clean sheet of paper, with an all-new physics and graphics engine (called “Neon™”). In addition to this, the traditional stage rally content is combined with exciting wheel-to-wheel offroad, raid, and rallycross races and extreme hill climb events.
Cars and Tracks
How many cars are in the game?
46. there’s a thread with the full list in this very forum. All cars have multiple livery options.
Why isn’t car X in the game?
This isn’t a discussion we can get involved with.
How many Rally Countries and Tracks are there?
The rally countries are Australia, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Japan. Each country has 6 point-to-point stages and 1 Superspecial “Crossover” stage
Are the Tracks real?
The Rally tracks are based on real locations, the Rallycross and CORR tracks are real circuits. The Raid tracks and crossover stages are fictional.
How many other tracks are there?
There are two Hill Climb courses which are marked in 3 sections, A, B, and C. They can be run as the whole course, the individual sections, or AB or BC.
There are 3 Rallycross circuits, 4 CORR off-road circuits (2 are variations of the same course) and 3 Raid circuits.
Can I run any car on any track?
The combinations are set by track discipline, laid out below.
CORR tracks:
Class 1 buggy, CORR Pro 4 (trucks), CORR Super buggy
Rally/Crossover
4WD, RWD, Classic, FWD
Hill Climb
Hill Climb Unlimited, Hill Climb Big Rig, 4WD, Classic, RWD
Rally Raid
Class 1 Buggy, Rally Raid T1, Rally Raid T4
Rallycross
Rallycross Supercar, Rallycross Modified, Class 1 buggy, CORR Pro 4, CORR Super Buggy, Rally Raid T1, 4WD, RWD, Classic, FWD
How long are the stages?
The average rally stage is 6KM or so. the longest track (not incuded in this average) is Pike's Peak
Championship and Career
How does the career mode work?
The career mode is a large number of events arranged in a pyramid. Competing in these events will earn you points and money. Points are the main driver of progress as new events and pyramid tiers will open up as you earn points. you will also unlock some cars this way. other cars (and alternative liveries for them) have to be purchased with money, and the amount of money your earn is dictated by the difficulty you compete at in each event. the difficulty is selected before each event, so players can set higher difficulties on what they consider thier specialisms to get more money, or set lower difficlties to pass events they may not be so good at.
What's different about Championship mode?
Championship mode is the "Pure Rally" part of DiRT. Cars that have been won or purchased in Career mode (of classes 4WD, FWD, RWD and Classic) can be used to compete in rally events at varying levels of difficulty and length. single rallies, short championships, and a full world championship are available, and each in an optional "short" or "long" format.
Physics and Damage
Is DiRT based on legacy Colin McRae Rally Code?
No, it’s an all-new engine, developed with the aim of combining realistc physics modelling with accessible handling. It’s a highly flexible system.
Does Dirt use a “Pivot Point”?
No, it doesn’t. DiRT uses a full four-point physics model (in fact each wheel is calculated as a contact patch of multiple points that can change shape depending on tyre deformation and camber).
How fast is the update?
The graphical update is 30 frames a second, though the physics calculations are run several times a frame to make for accurate suspension and damping effects.
Can you totally wreck your car?
At all levels of difficulty apart from the lowest, terminal damage is a risk - the most usual cause of this is tearing a wheel off.
What about functional damage?
The following functional parts of the car can be damaged:
Engine
Gearbox
Drive Shafts
Exhaust
Bodywork
Cooling
Suspension
Wheels
Turbo
Some of these have a visual effect or are damaged as a direct result of deformation, such as suspension. The level of functional damage applied depends on the chosen difficulty setting.
What setup options are available?
Camber (front / rear).
Toe (front / rear)
Suspension stiffness (front / rear),
Ride height (overall)
Bump Damping strength (front / rear),
Rebound damping strength (front / rear)
Fast Bump strength
Fast Bump activation
Final Drive ratio
Individual gear ratios
Brake Bias
Brake Disc size
Brake Pad hardness
Central Diff Torque Split
Limited-Slip Diff acceleration locking (front / rear)
Limited-Slip Diff deceleration locking (front / rear)
Downforce
Anti-Roll Bars (front / rear)
Tyre selection is not an option as it's very much a right-or-wrong selection. you're either on the right tyres or you aren't, so it was decided to always give the player the right tyres.
Does the game support force-feedback steering wheels?
Yes. All major wheels should be supported, including the MS wireless force-feedback wheel and the Logitech G25. G25 supprt does not extend to H-pattern shifting and clutch, though.
Multiplayer and Online
Is it true that DiRT has no multiplayer mode?
No, it’s not true. The multiplayer mode in dirt is on-line, real-time where up to 100 players compete on the same stage at the same time. There's no wheel-to-wheel racing with collisions - the multiplayer mode uses the rally and hill climb cars and tracks.
Is it true that there are no voice comms in the game?
There are voice comms in the game, but it's on a one-to-one basis. you pick someone to talk to while you're in the lobby waiting for the race to start
Does DiRT Support Downloadable Content?
There are no current plans for any DLC for Dirt.
Also, screenshots.
These were taken from the demo, on my PC (Intel Core 2 Duo 6400 @ 2.13GHz, GeForce 7900GS 256MB, 1GB RAM). I used FRAPS to take the shots as BMP's, then converted them over to JPG's. Yes, it really does look like the screenshots.
(Note on the damage shot...I thought it a neat touch that not only did the car take damage, but the guardrail deformed as well)
Just throwing this one out for the racing fans.
I'm particularly looking forward to trying the Pike's Peak hill climb.

i gotta a 360, just for this
most of all, most of all

but i'm bound to fall
bound to fall for you
oh what can i do
I enjoyed the Hell out of it, seriously good stuff.
The graphics rock, too. Very fun, good feeling of speed. I was pretty crap at it though, how'd you get the replay to work? (Mine was blanked out, maybe becuase I kept losing!)
I didn't manage it.
But hey, the damage modelling is AWESOME.

Of course, I was using the keyboard so I could get some quick screenshots. I'll use my wheel later.
Then McRae shall fear me. ;-)
and whoever decided to automap the e-brake to b is a fucking idiot.
the cockpit view is so fucking incredible that it actually got me back into pgr3 for their cockpit pov (even if it doesnt hold a candle to dirt's).

EDIT: What is your longest jump? Mine is 202 ft so far.
But every course feels like you're driving on asphalt. You can brake instantly and throw the car around corners at speeds where you really should have slid off the side. I understand it's not a full-on simulation, but come on.
For that, you need to pick up Richard Burns Rally on the PC. ;-)
I changed the controls to layout 2 before I even had my first race.
Swaps the handbrake to "A", so you have "X" and "B" for gear up/down.
This is an awesome demo. So very pretty, gonna try get a replay in a minute.
Also, I really hope you can mute that hey-brah narrator dude.
Codemasters must love me. They keep saying such nice things.
Well, Travis is the defending Rally America champion and has placed quite well in recent WRC rallies so he sure can drive. Even beat Colin last X-Games. Last I heard he's competing in the Redbull X-Fighters tonight in Dublin. Lucky leprachuans.
...that was a joke, right? Colin McRae rally has NEVER been realistic. NEVER. You know up until pretty recently, the bloody car pivoted around its centre, right? They didn't even have proper suspension or basically ANYTHING modelled.
It's 100% arcade.
If you want realism, you don't play Colin McRae or anything by Codemasters. You try games like Richard Burns Rally or Live for Speed instead.
EDIT: Oh wait... just looked up Richard Burns and I suppose there won't be a sequel. RIP. Hopefully the spirit of the game hits the 360.
Yeah, they have taken some flak over the pivot...they addressed it specifically in the FAQ:
The game itself is a tonne of fun: I enjoyed the traditional rally aspect (even though I was horrible at the crossover race) and also liked the new buggy races. There were some amazing collisions during the races I played last night, and a few awesome flips.
I like how the scenery that you crash into is much more interactive now, like the guardrail in the crossover race or the little orange fences in the buggy race. It was really cool to come around the corner to see that an AI driver had completely taken out the fences on a corner. It was likewise impressive to see the AI cars crashing into each other instead of just following a set route or following each other in a line.
The only thing I didn't like was the sound - it sounded like the sputtering and clanking of my engine overpowered everything else, but I guess I can fix that in the menus.
I'll buy this game for sure. On top of Forza 2, this will keep me happy until PGR4 hits. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see a new Rallisport Challenge game though...
Racing games (GT series especially) have really needed deformable barriers. It's little details like that that really help.
EDIT: Just installed the DIRT demo... there is a Starforce file included, but no reboot seems necessary so far, so hopefully its the "mini" variant...
Any word on Rallisport Challenge 3?
Which acutally doesn't bother me, I've yet to have problem one with it...and I'm not the type to immediately jump on the internet bandwagons when I read things like "Starforce raped my sister". :P
Very cool! I've never played that. It's been mentioned a couple of times here too, so I'll have to check it out.
I heartily recommend RBR to anyone who likes rally racing.
Be warned, it's definitely the most difficult rally sim out there...I liken it to playing Grand Prix Legends on gravel.
i need an xbox 360, though.

you can say that again.
shit, we still need rallisport challenge 2 to go backwards compatible.
