He also set the limit for public gatherings to I think to ten or more with yesterday's statement along the lines of 'I am so proud of most of you who have really taken all this seriously despite the cost and for the rest of you I guess I have to sign something so here you go'

There was an article for a few days in the Washington Post about how this crisis shows why so many presidents and many of the better ones came from being governors of the states. In general many of the governors have stepped up and shown leadership. Cuomo of New York being the face but a lot of others. Republicans and Democrats. Not all of course.

It's more that being governor gives you a lot more opportunity to do things that give you a good looking resume without the messiness of making sausage in Congress. Governors just have a lot of power to unilaterally do things to help this crisis. Senators or House Members, as we see right now with the relief packages, do not.

This is also why it's important that the President use the powers of the executive to act decisively in these kind of situations.

Won't link anything because sources are in Dutch, but the picture here is much the same. For deaths, it was (a few days ago) 70% male, average age 82. How does the individual stimulus work anyway? Is it totally hands off for the individual? Does the federal government just check based on your social security number?

I won't be getting a stimulus check based on the rules, which is fine and I'm very happy that people who need it will get it, but I admit I don't know how it works and I'm curious.

I just got this email from DFAS, the Defense Finance and Accounting Service.
    Defense Finance and Accounting Service

The U.S. Army is reaching out to gauge the interest of our retired officers, noncommissioned officers and Soldiers who would be willing to assist with the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic response effort should their skills and expertise be required.

These extraordinary challenges require equally extraordinary solutions and that's why we're turning to you -- trusted professionals capable of operating under constantly changing conditions. When the Nation called -- you answered, and now, that call may come again.

If interested and you remain qualified to serve in any of the following health care specialties: 60F: Critical Care Officer; 60N: Anesthesiologist; 66F: Nurse Anesthetist; 66S: Critical Care Nurse; 66P: Nurse Practitioner; 66T: ER Nurse; 68V: Respiratory Specialist; 68W: Medic - we need to hear from you STAT!

If you are working in a civilian hospital or medical facility, please let us know. We do not want to detract from the current care and treatment you are providing to the Nation.

While this is targeted at medical specialties, if you are interested in re-joining the team and were in a different specialty, let us know your interest.

[name, official title, and contact information redacted by me]

DFAS is the government organization that pays military personnel and retirees, along with literally the entire defense department. And I got this directly from them, not a “Here’s what DOD is currently thinking!” that I get in veteran news letters.

I’ve only been retired for about nine months, so I cannot be sure if this is common or not, but it’s a thing that is officially happening.

My greatest fear of the Trump administration is that he does something so horrible that necessitates he enact the Retired Reserve Force, which means the President can force me back into service if he deems it necessary for national security.

I was 11B (infantry) so I’m not what they are currently looking for and this is just a request, not an order, but it still scared the shit outta me when I started reading it.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed during a morning press conference that Trump wants to station soldiers near the Canada-US border.
American government officials inside Donald Trump’s White House are actively discussing putting troops near the Canadian borders in light of U.S. border security concerns around the coronavirus pandemic, sources tell Global News.

Few people cross from Canada into the United States at an unofficial point each year but the goal of the policy would be to help border guards detect irregular crossers, the sources said.

Better than the US, though that's not saying a lot. Still fairly early days here, relatively, but a lot of our stuff closed around the same time initial waves of restrictions were put in place in the US. Lots more testing and a public healthcare system will mean the response overall should be better, though we're a federation so to an extent the response is still patchwork. The federal government has done a decent job so far trying to coordinate and provide financial relief.

For direct reference, here's the stats page for Alberta (where I'm at), the fourth largest province with the fourth-most covid-19 cases:

https://covid19stats.alberta.ca/ - It does some cool stuff like break down by area, whether cases are thought to be community spread or not by day, etc.

The Canadian Government is very much not a fan of Trump's idea to militarize the border:

Canada 'strongly opposed' to U.S. stationing troops near shared border
    https://cbc.ca/news/politics/trudeau-trump-border-coronavirus-1.5510853
The Canadian government says it's "strongly opposed" to the idea of sending American troops to the border to intercept illegal migrants as part of that country's response to the coronavirus pandemic.

"This is an entirely unnecessary step, which we would view as damaging to our relationship," said Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland

"We understand the concerns about the coronavirus. We share those concerns, very much," she said.

"What we have said is, 'We really do not believe at all that there would be a public health justification for you to take this action. Of course, it's up to you to decide for yourselves.' And we've said we really don't think this is the right way to treat a trusted friend and military ally."

Whole Foods has started setting limits on what can be considered staple groceries. Hopefully it stops the panic buying.

The state of Oregon has already gone through 95% of the PPE in their disaster inventory and the surge hasn't even happened yet.

People are being intentionally aggressive towards hospital staff. Several greeters have had people cough on them in anger and it is not a good idea.

Tazing, tackling and being arrested isn't worth throwing a tantrum in a hospital setting. Don't do it.

My opinion is this is a bad idea. Ventilation isn't a simple thing and I am not a doctor.

Edit: Article outlines reasons from an anesthesiologist.

It's unethical in my opinion to treat two people at a lower standard because you're determined to "do something" if that something generates an additional harm.

Everyone is determined to do everything within their power without anyone calling them out on it because it's scary and feels yucky to admit there's nothing we can do.

Edit2: article implies it's approved, not necessarily happening.

How is Canada doing with their epidemic? I haven't really read anything about them. I'm wondering if anyone would be trying to get from there into the US during all this...

Nope, nope, nope. We have a socialized medicine up here, so anyone with functioning brain cells would not be trying to go to the USA. If you want numbers, CBC news has an interactive here:

Canada also enacted the quarantine act today for travellers returning to Canada (this includes the USA). Isolation is now mandatory

ny is now sharing ventilators . I thought this was a worst case scenario measure.

I thought this was supposed to be a last resort measure. Not implemented unless shit hit the fan and were overloaded. Does this mean shit hit the fan already?

Currently it's labeled as an experiment. Which is a bit better.

I think the issue is staring at the massive demand that will be next week (or even worse, the week after.) Knowing if this works before the flood has some value to it.

We have set up at least one outdoor tent morgue in Queens.

So, I am not sure exactly how one defines shit hitting the fan, but this feels like evidence of it.
