BTW, does the maintenance tunnel key, or anything else other than your PP level or the achievement unlockables, get saved for later playthroughs? I don't want to bust my ass getting the key when I'm sure I'm not going to live more than 16 hours longer in this playthrough at my level.
Yeah, I know, but it's my personality. I wanna help everyone. Military really enforced the "No man left behind" mentality that I already had.
Of course, this would be a lot easier done then said if they were actually semi-competent and not quivering masses of jelly.
I know you're freaked out, but pull yourself together. You wanna fucking die here? No? Then stick close and shoot anything that moves and isn't wearing a Megaman helmet.
So there's this one point in the game where you have five survivors to escort back all at once.
After you beat the cult leader, so I had to beat him and about 50 cultists (easy - I had a sniper rifle and a katana for them) before each rescue attempt too
After a few attempts, my face started to tingle and my jaw locked up. Apparently those are symptoms of a mild panic attack...
Eventually I just said fuck it and decided to just get as many as I could back.
I rescued two.
edit: This game gave me a panic attack. Oh great, top of the page...
... There's a bathroom right in the movie theatre area where you could have saved so you didn't need to repeatedly kill the cult leader and his cronies (Any survivors that are with you when you save get saved as well.)
Yeah, that's where I was loading from before I killed the cult leader. Never realised you could save with the survivors around though.
But posting that in a seven month old thread sure is. :P
Ba dum tish!
Just got a 360 and a copy of this game. Another survivor to man the barricades. Oh my word it is good. Taking it fairly slow because as much fun as it is, each time I die I tend to lose the urge to restart immediately. I'm only level 16 so going for a save and getting further into the story still seems a bit premature.
Hey guys, a question. Is there any way to force a restart with the original Frank clothes? I want to keep my levelling up, but don't want to start the game wearing a dress and a Megaman hat each time. Just in case I want to show it off to people, I'd like to keep my uber zombie pwning skills but not have to look like a twat during the setup.
Favourite moment so far has to be the first time I discovered the maintenance tunnel. And hundreds of zombies. And a car with the keys in the ignition. :P
Not so favourite moment: car breaking down. In the maintenance tunnel. With hundreds of zombies. And then the sun went down.
Is there anything in the world more fun than hitting zombies with random objects? A custom soundtrack makes for ultimate pleasure. I personally recommend Dean Martin's "That's Amore" and "Don't Worry Be Happy". It seems the cheesier and more croonsome the song the funnier it becomes, especially in the supermarket. The sense of joy I had running out of Jill's Sandwiches with a heated frying pan while Dean Martin was on the soundtrack had me almost crying with laughter.
In retrospect I think I would have had a lot more fun with this game without the time limit. You get so little free time to just go kill zombies in interesting ways at the beginning, which is what you really want to do, and I felt so "shit shit story mission coming up survivors need saving shit shit SHIT" and I rarely got to just chill out and whack zombies with bowling balls and so forth.
Then towards the end of the game, when I had hours and hours and hours of free time with little else to do, I sat down and said, "Huh." If I had been able to advance the story at my own leisure...
Thing is though, how else would you do a zombie game?
The ability to chill out and kill zombies is right there. But in terms of having a story to go along with it, what else are you gonna do? Anything else would just negate the sense of urgency and trying to survive the zombie horde, and end up getting dull pretty quickly.
So I had a harrowing battle with the shopkeeper and got Brad's medicine back to him with literally no time to spare, there was no red left in the bar and the next case immediately started. I did a rescue mission and started the case immediately afterwards...
Fuck Isabella and her heatseeking motorcycle. I know how to kill her, I just need to stock up on more guns, but her whole design is just cheap. I expected a chat, not a boss fight, and it turns out it's a "bring guns or you can't win" fight.
Right but the game is only 6 hours long minus cutscenes and not counting overtime mode. It was designed to be played repeatedly. Trying to do everything in one go is an option but you shouldn't feel like you have to do it. If you want to have a playthrough where you just kill zombies then that is available to you. If you want to save survivors but not do the case files then that is available to you. If you want to do the cases and nothing else then... you get the idea. Doing all of the above is also an option but it should not feel like a burden.

So I had a little problem with the No Mission Mode.
Earlier in the thread somebody said that you could wait in the Entrance Plaza until 5 PM and you wouldn't have to do the missions. Well I did just that, the zombies were let in, I killed a bunch and then just chilled out until 5 PM, not going up the stairs until after that. And when I went up the stairs and down to the security room, the story stuff still triggered and Otis is still constantly calling me. Did I do something wrong or what?

There's a katana store (well, I'm sure it's not just a katana store, but that seems to be all that's really in stock) right there, which you can use to grab some swords. You then need to pick a position where you can't easily be reached, and hack away as she comes around the corner. It's very doable without ranged weapons, although it is probably easiest with a sniper rifle (with plenty of ammo). The best place to do this is near the scaffold, on the opposite side from the grocery store.
If you hang out in the scaffold it's sometimes possible to get her slightly bugged where you can just run out and start hacking her apart.
Not that any of that information probably helps you anymore.

Otis calls you mainly about survivors, which he stll will. "Missions" refers to Case Files. You can either do it that way, or just fail the first mission (Rescue Brad). After that, you won't get any more case file missions.
And I definitely recommend ignoring the case files on your first one or two playthroughs. That will remove the sense of urgency, allowing you to just tool around, killing zombies, rescuing the occasional survivor, and just learning the game. One you start getting bored, then start a game where you try to finish the case files.
And I'll give one very helpful hint to people just playing this. After you come out of the warehouse by the security room, go up the stairs nearby on the right. Up there is a coffee shop. Towards the back wall, there is a cooler with unlimited orange juice. Those are great for regaining health. Carry as many as you can. You can also give them to survivors if their health is getting low.
Also, underneath that coffee shop on the first floor are 2 small toy stores. Once you have a slightly bigger inventory, go in the second one and pickup a toy laser sword off of the wall. As long as you have it in your inventory at night, you'll cast a red light allowing you to see a little better.

There's also a blender up there. Add two OJ to the Blender to make a Nectar, which is even better healing than OJ. There's also a Frying Pan up there, and a stove you can set it on to heat it up.

So . . anybody else just hang out in the zombie infested DIY store. I think I've wasted about five days just hanging out in there and dicking around with the various things that you can do to the hapless undead, as well as having more familiar weapons like chainsaws, shovels and lawnmowers there is also:
The Shower Head: This can be found by the elevator to the warehouse but thier is a tonne of these here. Just wack it in the deceased perons noodle and watch the contents of thier heads pour out through it.
Paint/Oil can: For real comedy value just launch these about the place. Paint cans coloufully tag your undead assailants while the oil can is ripe for hillarity just throw it into the ground and watch as the dead slip and slide after your flesh.
The Bore Drill: A beast of a weapon and so much fun to use. Simply pick it up, skewer a zombie with it and watch them spin so fast and hard there body parts fly off. Bonus still is that you can walk around with the zombie still on and use the still attatched spining body parts to smack other zombies to death.
Scyth: Simple but effective. Wack the blade into the head of the dead and then watch as Frank puts his boot against the zombie for leverage and pulls it's head off with a satisfactory crunch.
You can also find iron pipes,2x4's, mail boxes, a garden umbrella, traffic cones and a nail gun amongst other things. Just sit back and waste hours in that place.

The only weapon really missing from DR is fire. I guess there was a reason they stayed away from it, but it is a gaping hole in Frank's arsenal.

You can get moltov's from the firebug if you choose to rescue him instead of letting his crotch burn to death. 'course I'm pretty sure it doesn't light anything on fire; just explodes real good.
So I had a dream about this game last night. I can't remember any of the details but I woke up this morning and put it in. I am now about 25k kills in to genocider achievement. Good times. This game sitting in my backlogue unfinished has been a thorn in my mind for a long while now.

Eh the first half wasn't that bad. Now I am taking a break and having some lunch doing some house work and will finish it up this afternoon. Then I will have enough levels I should actually be able to rock right through the game on my next play through. It wasn't nearly as monotonous as I was expecting.
Very true, I didnt expect to enjoy the genocider achievment as much as I did. I just couldn't get enough of crashing into the propane tanks.

Even better is mixing a OJ with a pie. It makes a untouchable and the zombies will more or less ignore you. Or even grab a coffee creamer and a OJ which will make a quickstep so you can run faster.

Then there was the case of the "invisible survivor" in the Alfresca Plaza in the same store as the two guys who attack you were earlier. It says he's supposed to be there, but he isn't? Is this a bug of some kind? Should I perhaps get online and get some patch before I try to continue?

You forgot "actual save points so I don't have to replay the entire fucking game if I die".
That fact completely turned me off of DR, and I haven't played it more than a few times since buying it because of that.
