Saw a few videos about modular buildings made in the blueprint designer and it almost got me back into the game. The idea I could just slap down a single building and suddenly have a full 780 line of Iron or Copper ingots was pretty cool.

Sadly, my original plan for an omnidirectional building fell apart, and then I realized the constructors were just slightly too big for me to get three floors of smelters without having to do stuff like put a floor partially up the wall (which would break my modular idea, which would have allows me to drop a 300 ingot bottom floor, a 300 ingot middle floor and a 180 ingot top floor, so I wouldn't have to drop a full 780 box for every single node) and so I kind of just lost interest again.

    Almost!

If one of my factories is below efficiency I simply let it run as is and start building another factory. In terms of end product it's far more efficient to build a new ideal setup alongside the old setup rather than retrofitting.

Different strokes. I'm infamous around here for my mega builds, so if part of my factory isn't working the down stream effects are really really bad. Plus, again, train networks - at this point my world is interconnected to a huge degree.

Like as an example - the waste water from my aluminum plant is used to make concrete, which is shipped to my fused modular frame factory, where it's used to make the encased steel beams.

Some inefficiency I'll accept (for instance every sub module prioritizes shipping to my drone supply network so I can summon whatever resource I want or need at a whim), but otherwise I like my finely tuned machines

Wait, what? You can set up a drop of point but you can't "request" resources.

    @Undead Scottsman @Tef

    Yes you can.

You just need to understand how drones work.

A drone port can have a drone on it, and have this drone loaded with resources. But the drone won't go anywhere until it's given a destination.

So every single part I produce is prioritized to be loaded into a drone port, before it can go elsewhere in the network.

Then when I need a resource, I place down a drone port and plug it into the power grid. From that interface I search up the drone(s) I want and tell it to come deliver to the port I'm at.

Suddenly, within minutes, I'm getting resources delivered.

Then when I have enough I just clear the instructions to come to that port, and the drone returns home.

If you look back in the thread you can see that I actually build train stations with a built in parking area for a player train, and a drone port to summon resources.

So it's not literally delivering right to you anywhere, you need to create a port and supply power...but for all intents and purposes, it's close enough that what's the difference? You should only need resource delivery when you're building anyway.

You can in fact do the same with trains and their UI, but it's less convenient than drones and more likely to have issues.

Sorry, the way he suggested it sounded like you just ask for a resource and a drone will fly it out to you. I didn't think he was describing building a temporary dropoff.

I should finish my Factorio run.
We only use trains to deliver resources there.

Static variable setter onto the green network back to base, loads resource running train which then runs the requested resources back to the branch line station where the building is happening.

Messing with power and switches is one of the things I really need to focus on when I inevitably restart with update 8.

The new power towers are pretty nice; apparently 3x the range (looked like 2x to me) and the trick of using the zipline while building them looks like you can lay those down fast too.

Bunch of new quality of life improvements in Update 8, including several highly requested features. I'm not going to spoil them, except to say that the 1200/min miner isn't one of them.

I need to see how the game runs on my 6 year old rig with the UE5 update, but update 8 looks great and I'll definitely give it a spin on a fresh save. That said, this also feels like a dang near 1.0 update.

Apparently he's off to work on his own game independently, which godspeed. Hopefully he can translate his presence as a cm into eyeballs and success on the project

Wow that’s big, he’ll be missed. But 8+ years is a heck of a run. Even if you work for a great company it eventually means that you’re passing up other opportunities. I’m sure he’ll do great no matter what.

After pausing for a bit, I think I’m done until 1.0 - the idea of doing another nuclear setup before then is eye-watering, and I know that’s where it would head.

Satisfactory adding "Advanced Game Settings" to Update 8, which is basically toggles for all the basic cheat assists you could think of

Okay I lied. I got on and played around some with blueprints.

I started building 6- and 10-packs of buildings, but it mostly allowed me to slightly screw things up faster and in a harder to fix way.

As I feared, my PC doesn't do so great trying to run this game at 4k. Fortunately, I don't have time to play right now, but when I do in a few months it's going to be time for a new GPU at a minimum.

Fired up update 8 and damn it looks good! I never even checked out 7. Officially though the game is unplayable with the new lighting. So maybe a computer upgrade when 1.0 comes out.

Also they are going to have to fuck with the diffusion of their lights now, while it all looks great, most lights need a bit more diffusion. It's very stark.

All the water sources around the map (as opposed to internal) are a bit fucky I'm general - I know past a certain point in the swamp the water exists visually, but you just fall through and out the world, can't build any water extractors there.

    Very frustrating!

The new Luman system feels like it's going to force you to change the way you play. You're much, much more reliant on light sources for light, as interiors without lighting are INCREDIBLY dark. You use windows for natural lighting, lights or signs to light stuff up now, but anywhere they don't touch is going to be dark as hell.

Youtuber's demonstration of the new lighting.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtY1LI2cNx8

I might not wind up using this.
