it's time we, as a people, face up to Nickelback

Smash Mouth had their return, Linkin Park had their return

it's time

it's time we all face up and acknowledged the truth, the truth we weren't ready to hear for a decade

Nickelback is a good band

I'd say that Smash Mouth might have had a retrial in the court of public opinion, particularly in certain circles after the memes involving All Star and their open support of LGBT rights

Now does this mean that Smash Mouth's music is good? Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....???!?!?!?!?

smash mouth's 2 big hits are about vibing and loving yourself, and global warming

they just came into the scene two decades too soon, they're now speaking directly to the disillusioned millennial/zoomer generation

also All Star being associated with Shrek kept it in the public consciousness long enough for it to metastasize

Also it's very funny that they did a cover of Do It Again for the Me Myself and Irene soundtrack

When I had my first job in a servo, the dude I usually had shifts with would constantly play Nickelback and Creed, so now any time I hear their music I have a weird craving for giant gummy snakes and the smell of tobacco

smash mouth fuckin' rules. one time a local radio station had a contest where you could win nickelback tickets if you called in when they played two nickelback songs in a row. about 75% of the time I would not be able to tell that they were on the second nickelback song until the song ended and they were talking to someone on the phone

also I think nickelback signed a number of truly heinous bands to their label. fuck nickelback.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to say good.

But definitely super undeserving of the hate they get.

also yeah Smash Mouth had a song reach #4 on the Billboard charts

which explicitly talked about global warming

    in 1999

    this is my take

Smash Mouth? legitimate great band, deserved to be more successful than they were even. Astro Lounge is the business.
Linkin Park? really innovative and definitely got more hate than they deserve, i still don't like the songs but they're interesting at least.
Nickelback? the definition of smooth mediocrity, the sound you'd get if Pearl Jam had no soul.

Why is it that America, land of excess, hasn’t realised that what people really want is a foot long tube of gummy with a vaguely snake shaped head.

    Alright look. Look. Fuckin

    Listen

Nickleback is not good. By any means. But also they are not the literal worst they just fell victim to the meme. Weirdly enough all of their big radio hits are, in my opinion, their worst songs. A lot of the other tracks on their albums are pretty standard early 2000's hard rock fare. Its not innovative or anything but also not garbage and some are even pretty listenable.

They got ass guitar tone but basically all radio hard rock has ass guitar tone these days.

I forgot that Nickelback did hero.

I forgot that Nickelback did hero.

technically it's a duet between the lead singer and some other band's lead singer

Nickelback has a lot of genuinely gross lyrics

like, if they were just dumb and about partying I'd basically consider them to be Guy Fieri-tier working class fun

but Figured You Out and a few of their other songs are deeply scummy and based on interviews I've read, Chad Kroger has very little interest in self-reflection on that

It's from a thing said at some fast food place that had prices that were $x.95 and people paid with dollars

"Here's your food, and here's your nickel back"

Going back and listening to stuff from the late 90s/early 2000s has led me to the conclusion that a lot of music from back then is just absolute trash

I knew about the origin of the Nickelback's name because they're a Canadian band and because of the Canadian Content laws broadcasters have to follow that means they were, in a sense, federally obligated to play Nickelback a lot and tell that same tidbit over and over.

Does that mean you're also privy to the knowledge of how Bryan Adams got his name?

Yes, but only Canadians may know that dark and horrifically interesting story.

No lie, I genuinely enjoy "Rockstar" just because it is a parody of itself in a weird way.

I was going to link the video, but I had never seen it so I decided I should do that before I did so.
