I've never liked the onboard sound on this motherboard - it's quiet generally, and lacks bass, and doesn't support any kind of EQ software - and I'm not sure if it's the onboard sound or my deteriorating ears (or headphones). I think the first thing I should change is adding an external...sound card? pre-amp?
What do I need, and can someone suggest one?
one of the best things I've discovered by tolerating Youtube's autoplay for a while
i use the creative sound blaster z and its great
although maybe check your headphones with another device to see if that's whats causing issues?
Most onboard audio these days is pretty decent (and usually one of a few identical implementations), unless you have a particularly shitty DAC the limiting factor is usually the speakers
I mean, I don't know if I do? I have a set of HyperX Clouds from 2014, which were well-reviewed at the time and I remember giving decent sound. I think this all happened - or at least I first noticed it - when I switch motherboards last year. Most of what irks me is that my unboard audio won't support drivers that can run an Equalizer.
An external soundcard is just a DAC that plugs into a PCI-E slot, right? Do I need an amp (amp just amplifies volume, right?) Do DAC's also function as an amp?

i run mine at like, 30% volume and its the same as running onboard sound at 100
