Kenshi Part 1: The Bad Beginning

Meet Talus ( @Talus9952 ). He's a Shek. You know, one of those honorable races, better to die in combat than run. Well he's an outcast so he doesn't really go with those rules. In fact he immediately turns to crime, trying (badly) to lockpick a chest. Turns out it belongs to some jerk who isn't there and it's good practice.

Longer than I thought it'd be so gonna hide it in spoilers to more easily scroll by to those not interested
Talus is in The Hub with 1000 monies to his name, decent enough but not enough to make it. The local shinobi thieves basically run and protect this joint, but it takes 10k to join their little family.

Alright, Talus is ready to journey forth and find his fortune...OH GOD RUN AWAY!

And thus begins the chapter of what I like to call "Talus, the Shit-starter."

Not being far from the Hub, Talus tactically retreats to the safety of the shinobi thieves, who make quick work of the starving bandits.

Hey look at all this free gear and loot! And right by a vendor to boot! During Talus looting endeavors some Slavers show up and start enslaving the unconcious bandits. They pay Talus no mind even as he continues to loot away.

As the bandits come to, they find a very greedy Shek poking through the bodies of their friends and go on the attack. The shinobi thieves seeing a seemingly unprovoked attack and attack the slave...who now belongs to the slavers who are still busy enslaving the rest of the bandits. Oh dear. Even so, the Shinobi make quick work of them and Talus finds another source of loot.

After much looting he has the 10k to join the Shinobi thieves in the Hub.

Alright, Talus is ready to go out in to the world for realsies. He promptly almost loses to a starving bandit in a one on one duel. Still it's a victory!

Talus goes exploring and meets the alien looking Hivers, they've got some cheap prosthetics which will be handy if we lose any body parts. We decide to head back south and loots some ruins and encounters the Shek kingdom. Flying solo hasn't been going great so while there he chats up the local bar patrons to see if anyone else is interested in joining him. One is a female Shek warrior who didn't die in combat so had her horns cut off as a sign of cowardice. She joins our group for free, let's call her "Pixie" ( @Pixelated Pixie ).

She actually has way better combat stats than Talus, but he's better at carrying heavy things and running away. What a great team! We get geared up a bit and encounter something called a Skin Spider. Well there's only one of them, common we can take em! It goes as expected. This is sort of a theme as our stats are in the low 10s and a lot of stuff can beat us up.

Exploration continues and we find ourselves in the swamp. While the change of scenery is welcome and we grab some electrical parts at a discount to try to trade to other towns, but the local fauna is damn deadly. We need to get outta here. We die several times in the attempt which all end up in reloads as we're soon being eaten alive. Did I mention I have to reload a lot? Yeah this is a brutal game.

After getting ravaged by blood spiders several times, who should show up but a badass Wandering Assassin...from the Shinobi Thieves?! Hot damn, glad we joined them earlier. In fact he ends up saving our butts twice.

Unfortunately, trading didn't go well as we didn't think through the fact where most places have a feudal level of tech there isn't much demand for computer parts. Oh well, we visit the Shek kingdom and grab some new gear (they also don't really want computer parts) and start heading to another village--only to get beaten up by wandering bandits.

We recover but Talus busts his leg so Pixie ends up having to carry him to a town to heal.

Whew, that took longer than I thought. I'm starting to get the hang of things but we have to unload these computer parts and make some money. We might just have to do some basic laboring and get some weapon experience (apparently heavy weapons aren't a great way to go early on) so we stand a chance out there.

Of course more recruits will also help so if anyone would like to fight and die out in Kenshi feel free to tell me.

Mind you, just counting the trilogy and no spin-offs, I've got, er, five of those copies. So far.

If they are talking copy sold, I figure 1 and 2 would have sold a lot considering that they've gone on sale for what, like a buck or two a piece multiple times.

Oh, definitely. They've sold a boatload. But neither had the cut-through that 3 had, nor were they available on so many platforms (1 is just PC, 2 is PC & 360, 3 is PC, X1, PS4 and Switch). CDPR have been quite open that 3 has outsold the other two combined, but that's not to say the other two weren't still big hits at their times, and the consistent sales afterwards at pocket-change prices won't have hurt at all in the long run.

3 alone was at nearly 30 million last month, apparently. It may have hit that by now.

Monster Train is REAL good folks! Was hoping it would be, watched someone stream their first game or two, immediately picked it up.

Also really enjoy the whole thing about them being inspired by Slay The Spire (which is obvious in the game's design yet they have achieved a totally different type of gameplay) and reaching out to those devs and then providing a further launch discount to Slay The Spire owners. Good stuff that.

Oh man, Monster Train looks great. Is the discount for StS owners more than the 10% I'm seeing on the store right now? If so, it may be time to track down some Steambux (I'm getting close to the end of Chimera Squad anyhow)!

    (Previous post)

As noted above, Dirk got her first kill. She was getting antsy stuck in the base all the time, and Mal was whining about drugs some more, so we let Dirk go out into the local area to scavenge supplies (under the watchful eye of Madican). She found some stuff, she killed a couple zeds, she acquired a totally appropriate new outfit, and then... she spied a juggernaut.

Madican quickly escorted her back home. That would not have gone well at all.

About that time, we get a call from a Red Talon trader offering a look at their goods, so Pixie and Madican head out there. The trader has some cool stuff and we pick up a great new assault rifle. But of more interest is a utility truck on the side of the road in need of fuel and repair. Look at the plow on that thing! Imagine the zeds we can squish with it! We don't want to leave our current truck, though, so we mark its location and make plans to come back for it later. We go a bit further down the road and set up an outpost at a military checkpoint, which unlocks the ability to call in airstrikes on targets in sight once every 30 minutes... /insert evil laughter here/

    And then we return home...

... Because Madican decides we should just go to T-Dog's house and get all the drugs. As usual Iolo has concerns. But Mal is nothing if not persistent. We relent, and off goes Mal... with Madican again (poor bastard). First they go snag the utility truck Pixie found, since that's conveniently on the way. Then they go to T-Dog's house, which is naturally infested to hell. They kill a lot of zeds and then search the house. But the only thing they find is a note. Mal radios back to base about it and, well... Iolo's response is unexpected. :o

"Dealing with this" means traveling to Anthony's campsite, clear on the farthest end of the map. Of course. Mal returns to base to switch out vehicles because the utility truck just sucks down the gas, but our modded jeep goes forever on a tank, plus it's better for off-roading. So Mal and Madican hop in the little 2-seater (we remember this time! But we're not going to help anyone... just to get drugs. So we don't need 3 or 4 seats).

It's a long drive, and lots of zeds get run over, but eventually we get near the campsite. And... wtf? Iolo shows up unannounced.

Are Iolo and Mal about to become besties? Are they having a moment!?

Mal, Madican, and Iolo search the campsite, fight a bunch of zeds, and find the drugs. And Anthony. He has turned, too. Of course. We get a quest pop-up to kill him. So we do.

And the quest gets stuck at that point. It will not recognize that he is dead. After several frustrating minutes of running around the area, killing other zeds, and waiting, I google... and oh look, this is common in this quest line. There's no fix except to abandon the quest and wait for it to come up again.

    /sigh/

So, Mal and Madican and Iolo head to the jeep and... oh goddammit!

Madican gets to take the VERY LONG walk home, I guess.

Back at base, we switch over to Karoz and Rubycat, who are gearing up to go Plague Heart hunting. On the way to the first one, they run into TWO juggernauts standing in the road. We're not keen on taking on two at once. Even if we win, we'll doubtlessly be hurt and/or low on ammo and supplies, and that interferes with Plague Heart hunting. So we stop the car, sneak down the side of the road a bit... and call in an airstrike on them. Lots of booms later, that problem is no more.

Onward to the Plague Heart. They destroy it in short order. Karoz gets the killing blow with her assault rifle, which finishes off a bounty objective for the bounty broker, so that's cool. We're still fully geared up with meds and ammo so we head off to try a 2nd Plague Heart. Along the way, we deliver some food to our allies, the Headstompers. And then we go destroy another Plague Heart. This rifle that we got from the Red Talons is just insane. One clip and one molotov cocktail will take out a Plague Heart. Ammo is expensive but this is worth it. Karoz is pretty happy with herself, and treats herself to a box of donuts found on the kitchen counter in the plague house. Then they zip off to the bounty broker to get the reward for the bounty.

The reward is an SMG that Pixie is extremely happy with.

(side note: this was a particularly buggy session. Aside from the broken quest, Pixie got stuck a bit of scenery early on, and while trying to jump to free herself, somehow managed to fall from the sky and break everything. Very nearly died from it - she had only a sliver of HP left - that pic is after taking some meds. I'd have been super pissed if she died from a damn bug like that.)

    ---

    Kill counts:

    Karoz 819
    Pixie 579
    Mal 453
    Rubycat 260
    Madican 165

Kenshi Part 1: The Bad Beginning

Kenshi Part 2: The Joy of Animal Companionship
I forgot to mention that @Talus9952 and @Pixelated Pixie had made a short trek north to view the green lands which happen to be held by the super racist Holy nation. Like, attack non-Greenlanders on sight sort of racist. Plus they're strong. Eesh, I think I know who I'll avoid/raid in the future.

So they had back south to the Border Zone and come across a nomad group selling animals. So they decide to pick up a pack animal and call her Beasty` (unfortunately my screenshot button is `). On the plus side, she can carry a ton of stuff easily so we don't have to run around encumbered! Unfortunately if we get caught, Beasty` will get butchered for food (at least from starving bandits) so we're going to have to be more careful or just tell Beasty` to run away for a bit--she's great at that. Less so at fighting.

We stop at a Tech Hunter Waystation where it was Pixie's turn to start shit. Well, to be fair the bar Thug was the one starting shit, she just called them on it. The mercenaries made quick work of them and we discovered why they are twitchy--ends up they have a bounty on their heads. But it's all of 500 each so hardly worth doing it especially being so far away from a constable that it isn't worth it.

We meet a strange Hiver named Burn who is all about building walls. Like REALLY obsessed with walls. He's a bit expensive and I can't really even build walls at the moment so he'll have to wait though it does give me an idea.

Out back is a Skeleman (really a robot) doctor who can sell us better prosthetics but at a premium. Good thing to remember if we lose some limbs or pick up a skeleman friend.

Out in the border zone we come across an abandoned settlement with loads of building supplies. Huzzah! I was thinking of starting up some sort of settlement but this saves a bunch of money buying materials and we can load up Beasty`. The book is also apparently useful because in this post apocalyptic times we're severely lacking in NERDS so we're going to need to use books to uncover some ancient knowledge to learn how to build stuff.

We head back to The Hub and it ends up we can purchase the ruined buildings. So we put 1.5k down for a small shack and using our building materials to fix it up. It's cramped, but it's enough to get a research bench where Pixie begins to master the way of the NERD. Ends up we're going to need a bunch of books to get the nice stuff. Still, she learns what she can while Talus goes to the bar and recruits a marksman, let's call him Evma @EvmaAlsar . He's got decent stats for ranged fighting, assuming we can keep him there. We get him a "Toothpick" launcher and a number of toothpicks, plus a club if he's got in close range.

We head out into the wastes again full of hope! It doesn't last long as we're quickly beset by about 8 starving bandits. Evma got jumped and his leg crippled with everyone but Talus getting knocked out. But hey we won the fight! Licked our wounds and headed out again.

Hopefully we're getting good enough at fighting that things won't be so bad and we can get enough food as we have plenty of mouths to feed.

Umbra is a snowball faction. The idea is to just dump as many morsels into a bosskiller as you can before the boss spawns and let it go to town. That being said I'm not terribly fond of the Umbra champion itself, but Crucible Warden + Morselmaster is a super busted combination.

And that's Assassin's Creed Odyssey finished. No plans to get the DLC or completely clear every map marker.

It was a fun 100ish hours if often wonky. The whole mercenary theme was obviously meant to justify why you might be attacking military outposts held by whatever side you were supporting during the main quest but it could make me feel really flaky at times. One region changed hands at least 5 times as I wiped out forts and camps finishing up the map. In another region, I did a quest for a farm owner and then immediately set her grain stores on fire because it was an objective to complete the location's activities.

As for other mechanics, I much prefer the combat system now to the pre-Origins one that never rally felt good but there are still kinks to work out. Being able to hit multiple targets in one swing combined with some neutral townspeople being killable made some fights in populated areas spiral a bit. The camera has issues in tight spaces and fighting on an uneven surface is a really bad idea if you want to actually hit anything. A lot of enemies have unblockable heavy attacks that have a really long animation and ridiculous tracking. I often had to dodge 3 times in a row to fully evade some of those before being able to attack again.

Getting around is like classic AC: Sometimes you pull of effortless traversals, other times you hop across three pillars and a tree when what you actually wanted to do was step off a ledge to get to the ground or run up a wall when trying to use the stairs right next to it.

The game world is both gorgeous to look at when showcasing historical sites and vistas and utterly contrived in areas you play through. I don't think I saw a single fort that didn't have multiple crumbled walls and many encampments are right next to a hill that would let even someone who doesn't climb like Spiderman to just walk up and bypass the fortification's walls. I think the most ridiculous were the bushes growing out of the stone ground in caves. I get that it makes for an easy way to do stealth gameplay but it feels extremely artificial.

The rival mercenary system is an attempt at something like Shadow of Mordor's beloved nemesis system without any of the charm or real motivations. Killing the mercs doesn't advance your progression in any real way, they never really have any personalities, and don't interact with you outside a few barks when they're near you or when there's a bounty on your head (and despite supposedly being wanted for murder and thievery, no guards ever act any differently around with if you have a bounty). There are side benefits from being the very best mercenary that are quite useful but it feels really tacked on. It feels like a missed opportunity when so many of the cultists you unmask and seek out could have had been made a more memorable take on the nemesis system given that most have no real personality hinted at in the game before you kill them beyond being evil.

Oh, and as lovely as wandering the map is the animals are among the most aggressive I've seen in a game. Letting a wolf or lynx out of its cage in an enemy camp like you would in Far Cry is more likely to lead to you being mauled instead of the soldiers. Boars will charge at you just for existing. This is a huge shift from when I played RDR2 and the panthers would at least actually try to sneak up on you instead of charging immediately and black bears would normally run away instead of fight. This aggressiveness isn't limited to the predators either. I was attacked by a chicken that didn't like me fighting near it and putting your horse on autopilot along the roads will result in pedestrians being trampled left and right.

Honestly, the entire series could largely be summarized as "I enjoyed it but . . ." with regards to gameplay. With Odyssey being such a long game though those "buts" can become really clear.

I went through as a mix of Warrior and Assassin so I spent a lot of time sneaking around stabbing people. I made heavy use of the ability that sets your melee weapons on fire which was both effective, fun, and given the quirks of combat and the environment physics also meat I frequently set myself on fire. I'm looking forward to the next game bringing back more of the stealth element instead of often being unable to assassinate someone I sneaked up on early on in Odyssey.

All this said, that the player character doesn't have a ton of depth to them and the story is convoluted and impossible to take too seriously make it easier to accept some of these issues. The series lore is still a mess and the scenes that try give the player a chance to seem more thoughtful don't really succeed. Had it been Origins with Bayek and some of his targets' more complicated personalities the wackiness would be more annoying. This entry isn't trying to tell a thoughtful story (or at least I hope it isn't because they really dropped the ball if they were), it's a virtual holiday trip through Europe with more stabbings and the main character is largely in on it.

For me this is a 7.5 out of 10 but it's a lot of 7.5 out of 10.

I could just look it up on the wiki or Youtube if I needed to but I'm guessing a general understanding that people are after the Ancient Aliens style artifacts because they hold great power but can also make people crazy/turn into monsters covers most of the bases.

However, back in college a friend was playing through Symphonia after a few of us already had and me and some other friends would play the other characters in the multiplayer mode. That's remained an experience only the Tales series has provided.

I found that tilting it doesn't work very well, and once I started jerking it, I got much better results.

I would say the writing isn’t the strong point of the game...especially next to Disco and Outer Wilds.

Maybe they just mixed up wild and worlds.

If it makes you feel better, she wrote for both.

Does anyone here actually play other characters in Tales games other than the protagonist? I tinker with them for a hot minute, think "thats neat" and go right back to the main character.

I played as Rita quite a lot in Vesperia, particularly for grinding. Blahblahblah TIDAL WAVE! But generally no, I stick to the main character for most of my Tales of games. Kind of sad really, I am sure there are some interesting ones we miss out on by doing that.
