My experience, captains do a little bit of it to make themselves feel like real soldiers, but most of that is going to come from sergeants.

Captains should be busy telling lieutenants where to go and what to do, while the lt's are telling sergeants, who are then screaming at the enlisted. This would def work for Guard. Space Marines... yeah, they are hypno-indoctrinated from a young age. They shouldn't need someone to tell them to fire a weapon because they're scared. They're not going to be scared.

Edit: and they already know what they should do. Each one is a tactician in his own right. And could be the leader of any army now known.

As I see it, Space Marines going out on a specific mission (ie: infiltrate and destroy objective) likely don't even need to ever utter a single word, even if the situation goes pear shaped.

Space Marines fighting in a traditional warzone probably do need Sergeants, Lieutenants and Captains keeping things organized on a large battlespace. Not micromanaging mind you, but I'd figure each Squad is probably only aware of or concerned with their immediate AO and chain of command helps keep all of them aware and adapting to the changing flow of battle. So one Squad could likely handle the changing situation in their own area without much problem, but when things go tits up a couple kilometers down the line Sergeants, Lieutenants and Captains help keep it all organized on a macro level.

Also acting as distribution nodes for tactical data like deep cover scans and reconnaissance on structural weaknesses gathered by specialist squads and equipment that even for a regular marine would be incredibly distracting if they had access to all of it. I imagine if you or I could see inside a captain’s HUD it’d look like someone went ahead and installed every IE toolbar plus a couple dozen Foobar2000 plugins and the actual view of the battlefield was a postage stamp sized area in the middle. Of course it all makes sense to him, but he’s 300 years old, has two brains, and cybernetic wiring into both of them.

...because dragons are AWESOME! That's why.

I haven't read much of the Black Library stuff, but Death of Integrity has a fairly large battle in it, and sergeants and lieutenants would be yelling commands as the situation changed. "Cover those marines over there, move here and seal up this breach, shoot those enemies over there", that sort of thing.

I got a Terminator itch... What do you guys think is the best option for fielding a Termie heavy army in 9th?

My current thinking is Space Wolves, as they have extremely customizable terminators, lots of characters, even the non-terminator troop units can have termie sergeants, and real good chapter tactics to go support them. They also get their rules before xmas.
GK also seem interesting, what with the troop termies and paladins, but they seem like they'll be pointed to oblivion after they all get +1 wound and all the psy powers seems like a lot of paperwork.

    Created with BattleScribe

His army was a couple of plasma scion squads, two valks, 4 taurox primes, an inquisitor, and a couple normal hotshot scion squads. Also had an astropath and a master of the fleet as well. For deployment my infiltrators and Pteraxii went into deepstrike. All his squads were in deepstrike or in the valks. The tauroxes blocked the back of the board. I had my castle and spread out my infantry. Used my scout moves to make sure I had a lot of the corners covered. I won turn 1.

Turn 1 verse my Ad Mech is always brutal. I kill both Valks turn 1. Charge a miss placed Taurox with my cav. Kill a chunk of the infantry that came out of the Pinatas. Got engage on all fronts, one of my deploy scrambler actions, and 6 points from bring it down.

His turn 2 he kills my flyer but I autoblow it up doing about 7 mortal wounds to tauroxes. He kills my skorpius disentagrator (he uses the scions with additional AP and I couldn't roll a 4+ save) and it explodes. Kills some rangers and damages all my vehicles. Then he blows up a shooty chicken who also explodes damaging the other chickens and an onager. He also cleared some vanguard he got LOS on.

Turn 2 I clear off two tauroxes, heal a bit. Spread out. Get some more points. Save my deep strikes. He comes in turn 2 with his. Kills the shooty chickens. Only gets two electropriest. I made 3 of my 5 invuln saves. Turn 3 pick up all his deep strike with shooting. Drop mine getting me more engage points, finishing scramblers, and killing two tauroxes. He had 1 or something like that left. Got my priest charged up by killing a unit. But point wise he had been doing way better.

In the end I do a max turn from what I can. And with a single shot from a sniper I kill his one unit holding an objective. I had to reroll with the cp I saved and he did try to reroll. I wan 75-73 at the end. Just a damn good game. I was rolling so many 6s though. Just blowing away shit with my army.

A lot of fun though. Ad mech is such a neat army. Just having a blast with it.

    I love this

I would be so excited if they released Truescale termies... I'm tempted to buy some chaos termies and file off all the really grievous chaos iconography to kitbash some space wolf termies that have a better scale.

I mean it depends on the style of play you want.

Grey Knight termis and paladins are in a nice spot. The termis are getting the same upgrade the rest are to 3 wounds per rumors. Their tides are amazing.

Overall though just wait till October. All of the space marines but GK get their new baseline. So we have no idea what termis will look like till then.

I did some embiggened Terminators recently. Used plasticard spacers on the waist and under the feet then cheated slightly by giving them bigger scenic bases. Not as robust as @McGibs but very little effort involved and should look passable from the tabletop

Very good. And get blast grenade launchers and can drop in like 5" of your lines with a banner nearby.

Also they are like 4 wounds.

Glad you're winning. I'm on a losing streak against my friends Guard army.

Has yours tried the Manticores with flat 3 damage behind obscuring with tank commanders, Chimeras, and scout sentinels to push forward and board control yet?

It gives up the secondary Bring It Down almost by default, but the Manticores are just steadily deleting my shit and I can't get to them.

He has been playing pure scions. Manticores are annoying but my army is fast and good at getting through mobs of infantry and tanks. I can kill 2-3 russes a turn with some good rolls. I know manticores are good but a lot of the other guard stuff isn't great and you can pick them up real fast. The shorter board edge hurt them.

I think I might have some issues but my army has a lot of invuln too and that saves me.

Yeah, I'm hoping it's just that maybe the Necrons are weaker to it, but he's shredding me. The Manticores / rerolling shots / reroll 1s + the Obscuring is making it very difficult / I am hoping I just had poor rolls this last game.

The scouting sentinels really slow me down, though, in getting to him. Even if I go first, he's already at midboard and has Chimeras / Guardsmen clunking up the board...and everything that can has a flamer. I can kill them, easily, but that takes a turn while getting bombs dropped on my head....

I actually got to charge a Triarch Stalker at a Manticore this last game, but it died horribly in Overwatch :(. It had 9 wounds.

I'm hoping October changes will make the Necron tougher. Until then, maybe I'll throw DG at him, see what happens.

I decided I'm gonna paint my Necron terrain black with silver sry brush and then a light dry brush over that with metallic blue and red. Since I have 2 identical sets I'm gonna put red LEDs in one set and blue in the other.

The new terrain rule seems cool, purchasing terrain pieces with a point pool based on the size of the game.

I kind of want the new terrain set that is coming out as well. It looks cool.

    Idea is fine.

Tying it specifically to GW terrain makes it ehh.

I actually think coming to a tournament or game and the terrain is already set provides a different level you have to deal with in the game.

But mostly feels like a way to force people to use GW terrain and I am iffy on that.

While the implementation has room to be improved, I like where they are going with this.

If the average terrain placement is too sparse it punished charging armies in favour of shooting ones.

If terrain is too heavy it punishes shooting armies in favour of charging armies.

How much terrain is the right amount?

So how do you balance armies to each other when you won’t know how the terrain is setup, or how dense. Is the terrain an additive bonus or multiplicative, or maybe even exponential.

So first you start standardizing terrain amounts and maybe even placement, and then you can start balancing armies more.

But this is coming from someone who really likes the Warcry system where packs of terrain come with card decks for different setups to randomize it but still control it.

So first I am super into heavy terrain boards. Not my issue. There is a reason I have a set of MDF terrain, enough for a 6x4 board with good coverage, waiting to be built that cost in total less than 1/2 that amount of GW terrain.

And I like the terrain tags. They already standardized the terrain with that.

And in a way they already kind of released a standard amount of terrain per part of the board in the main rule book. Though they aren't specific on it.

And actually the mission they previewed I like.

But saying terrain is something you have to bring to a tourney (this is very competitive focus in the article and how I am thinking about) and that it needs to be terrain with point totals and a card.

The idea isn't bad. And I think standardizing terrain is good. But also at the same time I feel they are doing it in the way that means you have to pay more to them and not always the best for the game.

I mean what was GW supposed to do? Let people keep making terrain for free? For free!? Absurd!

If GW could friggin easily test paints on minis to check if they were Citadel Colour (tm) then I'm sure that would quickly become a requirement too.

Speaking of terrain, finally got mostly finished with some home made stuff after watching some Wyloch videos on youtube. Pretty happy with how it came out, still need to do some more work on the painting side by pretty impressed by the Krylon fine stone finish spray paint. Going to start running some practice games and wanted to get input on this layout - too cluttered? Most of the ruins would count as obscuring, light cover, defensible, scalable and breachable, with the smaller bits being obstacles. I've got some modeling foam and clay I'm thinking of using to whip up some craters and toxic pools next.

Finally managed to get in two 500 point games last night with my Necrons vs my brother's Tyranids. Game one I went first. I brought 19 warriors (I had always wanted to try a big warrior blob at 500), teleported onto an objective with my royal warden, and killed enough genestealers to drop him below 10. That proved to be enough to keep him from wiping the warriors out t1 and t2 I fell back, reanimated a decent chunk and shot (thanks warden!) the genestealers off the board and that was gg.

Game two he went first and used Swarmlord to launch his carnifex into my forces. The carnifex missed every attack lmao. My skorpekh destroyers then one shot it on my turn (landed 14 wounds after saves!). By the end of turn 2 he had killed my skorpekh lord (don't worry he reanimated) and had lost all but 1 wound on Swarmy. The skorpekhs really put in a lot of work and I didn't even boost them with the plasmacyte. It helped that the on each of the first two turns he rolled perils on catalyst and then rerolled and still failed to get it off. After that it was just mopping up the troops holding the objectives.

As far as I know, no.

We've actually not seen as much from the upcoming codexes as I would've expected at this point.

The only major reveals have been from the rules showing up in the new 9th reboxings, warcom previews, and white dwarf. None of the usual leaks ahead of time.

2-0 against Custodes. Tabled them in round 2 on the second game with some lucky rolls and bad placement on their part. They didn't take any storm shields.

    2-1 against general Astartes pile

Nothing will stop the spread of fully automatic luxury space communism

I've heard that sisters are atrocious in kill team.

Are they overcosted? Crappy strategems? What gives? They're decent on the table top.

Basically just not fleshed out like other factions. Only one faction trait option, decent weapons but too many t3 bodies to put them on. Limited to one Repentia for some reason. Their strategems are nothing special either.

There are strictly worse factions, but theyre mostly just tie ins from other board games and dont see play.

Oh right tournaments results. Went 2-0 against DG and lost 0-2 in the finals to Harlequin, taking second. I never had a shot against the clowns anyway, they're the best faction in kt elites and especially strong against Tau. I had to hope someone else would knock them out but nope.

He took home a Land Raider for first place, I took a box of Rubric Marines.
