With the temporary 4th group of new players trying out all the game modes before finding arenas to be full of the aforementioned 3 types of players!
Though on console I haven't seen any obvious cheaters in arenas, but you definitely run into people/squads who use arenas as their main game mode and are very good at it.

funny moment today - doing some lunchtime pub games and apparently queued in with ImperialHal. He hotdropped and it did not go well. I say "apparently" as the name/tags matched, but could just be someone pretending to be him.

I'm sure it'll never exist (especially on console), but it'd be interesting to have some kind of site or utility that told you where various pros/upper echelon folks were playing, if you killed them, if they killed you, etc.

Oh, don't get me wrong, it's a terrible idea for just so many reasons, falls apart the moment you include smurfs (ie: the hundreds of 'bronze to masters in a weekend/stream/whatever' that 'content creators' are constantly generating), people would flood servers light on their ilk, or actively hunt them down for griefing purposes, etc.

I just think it'd be neat to know I actually (likely accidentally) got a kill on someone I watch on YouTube, or if I got murdered by a pro (granted, if they have 10's of thousands of kills on their banner, they're probably no slouch at the game, obviously). Sure, if they have a predator badge showing it's no surprise.

Just one of those "I wonder..." kinda things that's impractical for all kinds of reasons.

From my personal experience when I get matched with streamers, or from viewing their streams, they more often die at drop than actually do good in a match. There's just so much you can do when hot-dropping with 6 other teams.

After 4 hotdrop instadeaths in a row the game decided I had to be the terminator... except I had to escort 2 rather delicate kids.
Joking aside, this is Apex "fun experience" match making in action. Though this was not easy at all, there was another team with 2 people who could shoot faster than me we beefed with for the entire map. Dropped at Capacitator and They at Labs, and every circle we kept fighting but not having a real 1 v 1 because of other teams, we were so resource starved. In the end they didn't pay attention to a circle pull and I got to caustic up a canyon, then ult them right as they entered the circle.

The finale was 2 teams fighting in the distance, and never turning to me as I kept shooting the winning team. Got me the "down 4 people within 4 seconds" badge which I don't have on a lot of chars.

So getting a new graphics card has seemingly not done anything to fix the graphics loading slow and the weird sound delays. Now though I can look at my CPU and GPU usage and see it nowhere near 100% and yet still have weird stuttery sound and invisible things not appearing.

The ability of your teammates to utterly squander opportunities sometimes still amazes me. It's the last three squads, we finish cleaning up one of the two other squads remaining and we're pinned down in a bad position, I use my jump as loba to reposition, and the enemy team all head right for me. My allies seem to not take any advantage of their sudden distraction, but even so I manage to knock two of them and hit the shields of the third. Okay so I'm down, but my teammates have most of their health and shields, there's two of them and one enemy. So what do they do?

Sit around doing fuck all barely healing a bar of shields as the enemy revives one of their two knocked teammates, then proceed to run in piecemeal instead of even trying to move together. One of my teammates reknocks the one that got picked back up, but goes down, my other teammate then just fucking dies. I was amazed at how they could so effectively transform a 2v1 advantage against a damaged enemy into a loss, but damn if they didn't manage it.

I have two IRL friends that I play with, and I love them to death, but one of them very specifically plays with very poor teamplay in mind. He just gets tunnel vision and only functions around what's directly happening to him.

Though playing with them has definitely served as training, as I feel I'm mostly doing a 2v3 or 1v3 most of the time I'm playing with them. :P

A reliable source has apparently leaked many of the Ranked changes coming this season.

I dunno if anyone cares enough about mechanical changes to consider them 'spoilers', but I'll put them in a spoiler all the same.

Note: it doesn't say anything about KP being capped, so it's possible that to compensate for the increased entry costs, we're getting the ability to get more KP (for those who do that well) and also team KP in a sense with the '50% for team kills that you don't get an assist for'.

As someone who doesn't get a lot of kills or assists, but strives to support his team to the best of his ability, I'm curious to see how this will all shake out.

New Legend is eating Lifeline's lunch. He can shield and move around a downed teammate WHILE resurrecting them. And that's just his passive.

The power creep on new legends is kinda bonkers, and some of the older ones could do with some big changes to their abilities.

Also, as a follow up thought, I consider these *substantial* changes to Ranked a clear indicator that, even without the ranked percentages shared by Respawn, that even if the stat trackers aren't 100% accurate, there are *way more* Platinum/Diamond/Masters players than they expected/wanted.

Season 13 is going to be wild, doubly so as a mostly solo-queue player.

Like, it might be what really drives the community to think of more than themselves, or it'll be the first season since S7 where I just hit gold and decide I don't hate myself enough to push onto Platinum.

I'm ok with this. From a glance this should put most players into gold, which I think is fair.

I got to PlatIV 4x, two times around S5-6 where it was tough, and 2x in the last 2 seasons where it felt nearly free.

And I don't think I've gotten that much better.

I also don't love the hardstuck fights, this season I could've tried to get into Plat but so many people play completely reckless on PlatIV because they have nothing to lose. It's a really unfun experience.

Seems like the aim is to stop people getting "hard stuck" at the bottom of a given division. Where they end up playing against players that are just a tad too hard for them forever.

I'm intrigued to see what the climb looks like now taking into account all the changes together.

Ok I'm not sold on Newcastle at all. I appreciate their "best offense is a good defense" philosophy with him but the game moves too fast for him and his various walls to be appealing, to me at least.

Best idea I heard so far was from team liquid - Newcastle/Gibby/caustic and just run teams down as you out trade them and can secure any position with a single Gibby bubble, using his tactical to breach

I can't tell if this game is getting sweatier than ever or if, after 400 hours and around 2000 matches, I am simply getting to some degree of competent where the matchmaking is pushing me up the ladder

    Probably a little of both

  • mRahmanimRahmani DetroitRegistered User regular
The game is definitely harder overall. Partly because I think the skill ceiling is so high that new players aren’t sticking around and partly because control/arenas have allowed the wider player base to improve their gunplay skills.

Those are all really effective Valkyrie nerfs, especially - they keep her (and to a lesser extent other vertical movers like Horizon or Pathy) entirely workable at the average level of play exactly as before, but they hit high-level players with a subtle limit to how hard they can exploit her movement mechanics for stuff like ratting and late-game rotation

I tried to eek out just 4 more levels of the BP yesterday, but I don't know if it's because it's end of season, or matchmaking completely broke, because it was the most unfun I've had in this game for a while.

I was constantly getting paired against predators, while I was getting the most chill people possible in my teams, like a dude and his young son just trying to relax and even they groaned at the "Sweats". It was match after match of this. At one point in arenas, after 4 rounds, one of my teammates managed to dish out 35 damage.

can't believe Newcastle's been out for five hours and I already have the Vulture badge

I don't even think it's the character himself, his abilities are good but not overtuned, I think I was just getting good positioning two games in a row (I simply play better on Storm Point too)

OK I am up +150ish ranked points at the end of the night

it seems like the most efficient and consistent way to get meaningful numbers of RP right now is to take a team fight or two and get 1-3 kills in the early-mid game, and then make at least tenth place and preferably above sixth

even a Bronze IV game feels like previous seasons' mid-Gold and up right now, in that you have to actually treat it like a long game to get anywhere, or you're just lighting RP on fire

I hope that sticks really. Apex is a much funner game when it's 2-3 team fights with risk of 3rd party than endless hotdrops, scramble for a gun die in 20s 60% of the time.

I had one nonranked game yesterday where 9 teams landed on Mill under the start of the flight path. I died after 75s and there were 7 teams left in the game.

To be fair the first week or so of a new ranked split is normally especially sweaty cos folks get bumped down.

I forgot how long these updates take to download on ps4 and missed my chance to play on launch day, a tragedy!

My plan every time a new season starts is to avoid Apex for a week while the truly good players escort themselves out of my tier and then start playing, with at least a chance of success. It doesn't make me any better at the game but it makes it a little bit more fun!

I did some solo queue in pubs, using my girl Rampart and I got 3 wins, with two of them being back to back.

Such a difference from just a day before, though maybe I got bumped down because of so many losses. Still felt great to get those wins with Rampart's buffs. Also two of those wins where with a Spitfire, it's not as good as it was pre-carepackage, but with Rampart at least, it's serviceable.

Ranked though, yeah, I was watching itzTimmy at work and he was in Gold 3, with two other amazing players and they were struggling hard. So I definitely knew to stay away for a few days.

Yeah plat 3 and below are all bronze now. So it's going to be sweaty as fuck in bronze while the previously higher ranked players move up. Hopefully should even out a bit more in aweek or so.

I've seen speculation on Reddit that maybe they didn't do literally 1.5 tiers, but went by the old RP value versus the new, and since they added a bunch of RP to the various tiers, everyone dropped further than usual. Edit: though I recall the blog post being somewhat coy on the matter, just calling it 'a reset' or something like that, so maybe they did intentionally drop everyone further than usual to really put the new system through its paces. I just hope they don't do it every season. Not like getting to Plat IV is a huge accomplishment, but only dropping back to mid Silver and being in Gold lobbies shortly weeds out some of the 'still figuring out how to move and shoot at the same time' tier of randoms.

But I don't think they've changed how Bronze/Silver/Gold are all a general population pool while Plat and above are at least supposed to be segregated off, meaning we now have new'ish (not quite Rookie tier) players in potentially the same lobbies as straight up Capital P Predators.

Yes, granted, those Predators will probably chew through enough lobbies to end up in Plat and above shortly, but they're going to leave a trail of destruction in their path to get there.

I've had some good luck with Ranked over the last few days, and with a little effort (not remotely the marathon sessions I used to start some seasons off with) am almost back up to Silver. Not exactly a massive accomplishment, but getting a win on the first night of the season was a pretty good feeling for someone who usually only gets a couple dozen per quarter.

Yeah, I'm bronze right now and every game has lots of master and diamond trails. My gunwork and movement needs work, but macro and rotation play is up to par. I'm having a ton of fun with it not being an int fest
