A few times now I've lamented how shitty my PuG/Pub drops were. How awful it was to get hot dropped into Fragment for the Nth time that day, or whatever.
Two days ago, it was more of the same. I played with a pair of friends in trios and we got to 6/10 top 10's without much trouble. Even snagged a couple more after it fairly swiftly. I then ended up getting stuck for like 2 hours trying to get the last two I needed for the 10 top 10's part of the challenge (I know, I know, there's lots of time left, but I don't usually go for that one, and I got lost in a sunk cost fallacy moment of having already committed so much time to getting so close). When the trio broke up, I went back to ranked, which included a Gold dropper literally running us through the energy beam at Harvester, instant squad wipe (I'm aware some claim that such an early elimination is supposed to assist with the match maker and put you in a better team/easier lobby next match, I think that's some "perfect gem activated" community conspiracy theory bullshit), thanks for the -24 rp asshole. Yeah, yeah, I've ducked one such attempt before, but from now on if I'm not the JM I'm definitely swapping to solo if we're lined up with that fucking thing. Oh, I'll go with them if they hop out, but I'm not waiting to be murdered with zero chance to react otherwise.
So, that fucking sucked.
But, last night was different. I got in maybe 5 games and it took a good long while, because they were all amazing. A ranked win, multiple top 3's, and I even got my very first 2k badge! I was just looking for 4 top 10's for the event, instead I found quality team after quality team.
Yeah, I know, sometimes luck will smile upon me for a change, but I wanted to at least share clearing that milestone after 3 seasons.

I've also had some pretty good team luck over the weekend, got a duos win with my sister yesterday, and two wins with randoms today, granted one of those I managed a grand total of 0 kills and almost 300 damage, but not for lack of trying, my teammates were just very efficient! I was able to help out by bracelet-ing up to an inaccessible platform full of golden air drops and leaving the black market out at the bottom whilst I ran to open them before the ring got there though, so I guess that was something...
This match was a little more involved though, still a lot of the Wraith doing all the work (I feel like every time I try and push in like she does I just wind up dying immediately...), but it was a pretty fun game I think.
The new air drop mode is kinda fun, mixes up the looting priorities in interesting ways, though we'll see if it's worn out its welcome after another week I guess!
The boxing ring is fun too, I like it, though I kinda wish it was somewhere else, I actually thought that that little shipping container corridor area was a neat part of the map.
No joke, spaceship/docks are the most reliable loot on the map and most people sleep on it.
I'm still trash, but feel like the best way to drop is look backwards and drop like 3 seconds after the start - going to the good early loot place the thirsty teams are ignoring.

Also, on a personal note, I finally made it: Plat IV!
It took some patience and luck, but for the first time I’ve managed to get out of Gold.
Based on my progress and play style I’m not sure Plat III is currently realistic, but I do intend to dabble in the new tier to see just how rough it is.

Hah, sure thing, the black market is kind of useful in this event even towards the end of the game where gold and red packages are dropping cos you can often find a spot to loot them safely whilst the other teams are fighting over them. Also you can set the market up just outside the boxing ring and still loot it from inside the ring's force field, which can sometimes be useful.
There's also some scraps of information for season 8 out on the EA site, a new character naturally, but also a new weapon this time round, and King's Canyon is getting quote 'obliterated' (again) so presumably there'll be some substantial changes to the map.

I've really wanted a battle rifle outside the Scout. Don't get me wrong the scout is great but I've been hoping for a bolt action/semi-auto that had more punch than the Scout but isn't as cumbersome as the snipers.
Now, on the list of "things I want want but probably don't need/don't make sense" a light ammo LMG. I mean I also would love if they put the Prowler back into standard rotation, or gave Heavy another SMG but neither seems likely.

So, a friend of mine who is at Gold III joined me in some Platinum lobbies last night.
Whew, it's a whole new world. Every game had a champion that was a Diamond, our third member randoms were almost always former diamonds themselves, and it was certainly the sweatiest of lobby sets I've experienced.
One can definitely make up for lacking skill with the movement and shooting portions of the game to get out of gold, substituting planning and patience for aggression (it's also slower; if you can hot drop into 2-3+ kills/assists, versus needing to wait for the squads to grind themselves down to 8 or fewer remaining, that would save some time)
Can't say I'm eager to repeat the experience. My friend said he came out ahead in RP, and I can't fall out of Plat, but it felt like every squad dropping were among the toughest I'd handle in a Gold lobby (as they should, we'd effectively moved out of Gen Pop where some Bronze IV's would show up tagging along with their Gold III friends). It was interesting, enlightening, but also like throwing ourselves to the wolves.
If my friend who is Silver III gets into Gold I might be willing to go back with a full team and see how things go, but having completed the fight night event track, my ranked objective, and the battle pass, I'm cool with having a couple of weeks where I mostly just check in for a bit and have some more time to dive back into Control or catch up on some shows or whatever. I'm sure between S8 and the rumoured Anniversary Event that'll likely accompany it, there'll be plenty of reasons to put some unreasonable hours into the game again soon enough.
First they came for the Muslims, and we said NOT TODAY, MOTHERFUCKER!
Every season I always forget about it and revel in my newfound murder skills. Right up until that first plat match where I'm reminded of my place in the grand order of things.
I think my playgroup (@squall99x & @moleface) and I hit Plat 4 during Season 5; the experience may have been sufficiently demoralizing such that we've barely played enough Ranked to get out of Bronze since.
That said, a return to King's Canyon — however "obliterated" it may be — could be just what my Mirage needs to get back into the Ranked routine.
Having had that experience, I can definitely see an emphasis on getting into gold, slowly making my way there, and ideally dashing into Plat briefly before the split or season changes.
It's good to know I have the capacity to make it there, but it's so far outside my comfort zone that I have zero interest in spending the time or effort to getting up to that level.
I don't think it's a fluke outright, but I'm not expecting it to be easy next season either.
That said, I'm excited for S8, the new Legend, the re-re-destroyed King's Canyon, and the anniversary event that I've seen leaks about but little substantial just yet.
First they came for the Muslims, and we said NOT TODAY, MOTHERFUCKER!
The issue for me is that if I'm dropping solo, then playing outside of ranked just means people are way more likely to do dumb stuff. The most egregious and common thing being DCing as soon as they're dropped.
I do still enjoy the sweaty plat matches. You've just got to roll with the fact that sometimes you'll come across a group of ex-preds who just 1 clip delete you before you even see them.

I was playing some random duos earlier and got paired with a predator octane, so naturally they quit the game as soon as they went down off the drop, but that's their loss really cos I managed to clean up that early fight and went on to almost win the whole thing, I even managed to come out on top in a legit 2 vs 1 gun fight!
Granted I suspect that's more because Horizon is kinda busted than my actual ability, but it still felt pretty good.

Honestly that's just part and parcel with pubbing. I think 50% of my matches (note that I'm likely trench tier) have good teammates, 30% are annoying and 20% are hotdrop/insta disco.
I've just learned to enjoy crazy 5 team melees AND ninja solo missions to top 3.
I've seen Reddit speculation that the 'blown up' area seems to be some of the mountainous/mostly unused terrain in the northern end, near Artillery. So this might be a case where 'blowing it up' expands the map a little bit.

Outside of the bit at the end, I'm imagining that there's gonna probably be some serious repercussions landing on someone's head. The Outlands ain't the Borderlands and I doubt Fuse's friend killing a whole bunch of Apex Games fans like she did is gonna just slide.

There was a little lore tidbit before about Wattson doing school visits, I assumed that was as in her role of a cool engineer rather than a bloodsport competitor, but I guess in the outlands you can just let the kids do whatever.
I won a game where I wasn't totally carried to the top! I only clipped the first part after we dropped cos the latter half of the match was not as exciting, by the end it was just myself and Bloodhound versus a couple of solo survivors, though we still almost managed to throw the win away at the last moment... Also I know the Hemlock is still considered one of the better guns, but I should really stop picking it up, I clearly can't aim the thing straight at all.
Also for anyone who hasn't seen yet there's a kind of Horizon lore easter egg available in Olympus right now, where you can activate some terminals around the map to get audio logs from Newton and stuff, I only mention it cos if you get all four of them you get a weapon charm and loading screen, so if you like to try and collect all the stuff I assume it'll only be available till the new season starts?

So...reading about all you folks and how your matches go, I'm pretty sure I'm the single most unluckiest Apex player on the boards. A bit under 17 hours played (sticking entirely to duos with a RL friend over Discord), gotten a few dozen kills, a single win, and roughly half the matches are loot starved rounds.
Like, don't get me wrong, it's fun as hell...but it does get a fair bit frustrating when the game/RNG decides to fuck you over (loot starve rounds), annoying game mechanics get you killed (sharing slide with crouch is a repeat of Mass Effect 3's 'take cover and vault over cover use the same key press'), and technical issues means what you see isn't what you think is happening (either netcode means taking extra damage behind solid cover or high ping players means being at a disadvantage when you think you're in cover). And that's not even touching on the cheating that I seem to run into once every other hour or so.

Eh, you shouldn't be loot starved if you keep rotating. You should be moving a lot early until you get the loot you need. Alternatively - play Loba if loot is your problem.
This game rewards fast aggressive movement more than perfect cover.

Re the first part, yeah...we've had several matches where we're in the top 10, running and looting our way around the circles, and still in L1 armor, helmets, and low level SMGs and/or pistols with no attachments. As for playing Loba, my buddy just unlocked her an hour ago...so, that wasn't a viable option until literally this morning.
And yeah, we generally play fairly aggressively (which is why we get kills but an incredibly low win rate), but when you're getting downed in the same ways that you got killed in Battlefield 3 and 4 on launch week, it gets frustrating.
Like, we're talking popping out from behind a building just far enough to clear the view, shooting a sniper rifle round into a person 150m away with a charge rifle, and ducking into cover...and taking damage well after you've gotten behind said building and you hear the other sniper's charge rifle discharge (and yes, I know of the trickle damage aspect of the Apex charge rifle...so unless the charge rifle can shoot through 2 solid metal walls, this definitely feels like a netcode or latency issue).
Could also do with fewer "Connection timed out" errors that just straight up disconnect me from matches, too.

Yesterday was a good day for me, I got like 4-6 wins? Maybe more? But I also played the game for like 8 hours.
I have played over 2k games of Apex and won 87 of them. The nature of the beast is feast or famine, in my experience. You either do well and get into the top 5-top 3 or win, or you get bumped off in your first fight. Again that's just my experience, I'm at best decidedly middle-tier.

Heh...see, my buddy and I regularly get in the top 10 and very frequently get in the top 5 or top 3. It's actually fairly rare that we get bumped off in the first 15 duos to get wiped off the board. And, like I said at the beginning, we're having incredibly amounts of fun...these are just annoyances/frustrations that do wear on us a bit, but it's not enough to get us to stop playing.
Now the CoD: Warzone 'pro'-tier players exploiting their way into beginner matches...that's what just pisses me off and gets me to just put that particular game off to the side until I hear Raven's patched that little nugget out.

Yeah, the main loot RNG I've noticed is right at the start if you're dropping in with another team and you open a bin with, like, 3 knockdown shields and they get purple armour and an R99 or something and you get killed immediately. But other than that there's normally enough stuff lying around for you to get by until you can take someone out and steal their stuff. Part of that is probably knowing from experience where good loot tends to spawn and, like, what direction you want to disengage from a losing fight in.
I only play in console so I can't speak so much towards the latency issues, it happens occasionally but not enough for me to notice. (Though then again I am not very good, so getting beamed from across the map by someone with thousands of hours in the game isn't that unusual...)

I'll see the same names a few times throughout an evening of playing...but it's usually when my friend and I are in the top 3. Tends to be that the match ends fairly quick when it gets to that point, so we're all just instant queueing back into the next match, which would explain seeing some repeated names.

If you're still in white armor, you're not getting in enough fights. If you don't get stellar early loot, you have to hunt to get damage to autoupgrade your armor BUT you want them to be fairly early so others aren't geared to the gills. Or try to shadow and third party teams.
Releasing on Steam seems to have done really well for this game. It's peaking 120k concurrent there alone.
The game does match based on ping and skill though, so especially if you play off hours (I was prone to playing well past midnight a year ago...) you start getting into weird matches and seeing repeats.
Also, this is purely anecdotal, but I've always found Duos to be sweatier than the 3v3 modes. I don't know what it is about it but that's always how it's felt.

What video settings and monitor are you using? One of my friends had a similar issue but it turns out that his display settings was...not aligned with the type of monitor he was using (i don't know the specifics) and it was causing inconsistencies in where he thought enemies were and where he thought he was (e.g. behind cover when he wasn't). Not sure if that's what you're running into, but it's worth checking out maybe?

Yeah, that's not the issue. I have zero problems hitting folks, so the monitor/video settings aren't desync'd. What I'm running into is the technical issues of a 20hz tickrate game.

When my and I drop at grow towers and we find nothing but white armor, Mozambiques, and Havocs while the other squads that dropped at the other towers find purple armor, Flatlines, and Longbows, I'm pretty sure that's the game saying that we're fucked. We can try to fight them...but we're not getting their armor and guns with what RNG decided we should have.
Sometimes the game (and it's not restricted to Apex) decides to fuck people over. If you haven't run into that yet, lucky you. I refer back to my opening statement: "I must be the unluckiest person on these boards."

That's kinda how battle royale modes are. And the nice thing is if you lose you can just roll again, there's not too many downsides to losing other than hurt pride. If you're consistently having tough drops I'd probably just pick a spot nobody is going to so you can loot in peace to start. If I'm heading towards a drop and see 2 teams going the same way, I might peel off and go somewhere less busy. And if it keeps happening, then maybe I'd chalk it up to bad luck.

Every season I always forget about it and revel in my newfound murder skills. Right up until that first plat match where I'm reminded of my place in the grand order of things.
That place is Plat 4 with zero points.

That said, a return to King's Canyon — however "obliterated" it may be — could be just what my Mirage needs to get back into the Ranked routine.
I do still enjoy the sweaty plat matches. You've just got to roll with the fact that sometimes you'll come across a group of ex-preds who just 1 clip delete you before you even see them.

Granted I suspect that's more because Horizon is kinda busted than my actual ability, but it still felt pretty good.
I love the prowler, I really want them to get rid of the wingman.
I’ve got like, every legendary skin for the peacekeeper. Almost never snag the thing.
It’s one thing to have a skin for a weapon you don’t use, it’s another to have a backlog of them for a weapon that might as well be endangered.
Okay, it’s not that bad, I do see them on occasion.
Oh, and in an hour and a half, the season trailer is coming out!
But maybe this season will be different!
Outside of the bit at the end, I'm imagining that there's gonna probably be some serious repercussions landing on someone's head. The Outlands ain't the Borderlands and I doubt Fuse's friend killing a whole bunch of Apex Games fans like she did is gonna just slide.
Let's Play Final Fantasy 'II' (Ch10 - 5/17/10)
I won a game where I wasn't totally carried to the top! I only clipped the first part after we dropped cos the latter half of the match was not as exciting, by the end it was just myself and Bloodhound versus a couple of solo survivors, though we still almost managed to throw the win away at the last moment... Also I know the Hemlock is still considered one of the better guns, but I should really stop picking it up, I clearly can't aim the thing straight at all.
Also for anyone who hasn't seen yet there's a kind of Horizon lore easter egg available in Olympus right now, where you can activate some terminals around the map to get audio logs from Newton and stuff, I only mention it cos if you get all four of them you get a weapon charm and loading screen, so if you like to try and collect all the stuff I assume it'll only be available till the new season starts?
but finishing a match with a charged headshot from a gold sentinel is one of the times
I only play in console so I can't speak so much towards the latency issues, it happens occasionally but not enough for me to notice. (Though then again I am not very good, so getting beamed from across the map by someone with thousands of hours in the game isn't that unusual...)
i spent my whole time just bouncing around it was so nostalgic
not even fighting just boing boing
i was gonna make an advanced movement guide at one point but then everything got brutalised
i get the impression player pop for this has done pretty well recently?
The game does match based on ping and skill though, so especially if you play off hours (I was prone to playing well past midnight a year ago...) you start getting into weird matches and seeing repeats.
