It was a relatively minor retcon, honestly. Maiev shows up after the fight in The Black Temple and takes him to jail. Later, we spend a while finding his soul and jamming it back into his body because a wind chime from outer space lectured us on how we are terrible people for beating him up in the first place.
It was Legion, man. The playerbase was fucking pissed after WoD, and it felt very much like, "In Case of Emergency, Break Glass for Playable Demon Hunters".
I don't know if I'd go quite that far (I largely stopped reading Marvel about the time I was old enough to realize they were putting Wolverine on the cover of issues he wasn't even in, just to make sales), but that's probably a fairly accurate comparison overall, yeah.
honestly it makes sense to me that they would resurrect Illidan to use him in the story because when they put him in TBC they did not use him in the story lmao
literally no one knows what illidan is doing in tbc
I wouldn't say my issues with Legion were gameplay-related per se, but a lot of it had to do with being tired of the general black/green aesthetic (remember WoD really only had one major update, ever, and we were basically just stuck in Tanaan Jungle for a year and I was just so sick of it), my overall dislike of Artifact weapons as a concept (their immersion was largely fine) and the ridiculous casino-style rollout of Legendaries.
I played a Fire Mage throughout most of Legion and enjoyed it (probably the last time I enjoyed the Class, honestly), and had a Sub Rogue alt toward the tail end of the expansion that I also thought felt great.
I didn't hate the gameplay; it was all the "other stuff" that I hated.
Mists of Pandaria was a legit fuckin good expac and I will fite anyone in the street who disagrees
So much new and original stuff they poured their heart and soul into only for the playerbase to dismiss it as "kung fu panda cartoon shit"
Mists outside of the faction war bullshit was great.
Actually, I think Jade Forest’s faction war stuff was pretty good, but that’s as far as I’d go.

No I'd say Sylvanas has had that role for a while now.
Can't wait to not kill her in 9.1!

We're in the shadowlands (the WoW afterlife) so it's pretty much an expansion of 'break in case of emergency'
We've already seen Kael'Thas in his miserable little hell, they've implied that Garrosh is being tortured continuously for resources (don't ask), and many more have shown up.
They've already shown where Arthas was sent after he was killed, so it's highly likely we'll see him at some point while exploring double hell (don't ask)
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
I mean, at this point I don't know why they haven't just had the WarCraft and StarCraft universes collide. Knowing nothing about WoW, I always just assumed it was your standard fantasy fare. Then I was told there are space goats that crashed their ships onto Azeroth.
So now the door is open to invite the Protoss, Zerg, and Terran into the mix.

I played a Shaman from Vanilla all the way through MoP, I think (almost always Resto, but some Elemental toward the end), before I started branching out to other Classes. Rogue and Warrior, primarily, but dabbled in Mage and Warlock. I prefer melee to ranged, overall. I didn't start Tanking until Shadowlands but I greatly enjoy it, and although I never intend to play WoW ever again, that's the only role I'd play if I were ever to continue. Don't know if that translates into the same experience in 14, though.
Okay so first off, broadly speaking, DPS rotations in FF14 have more buttons and are longer than WoW's, but are also less proc-based. This isn't a universal truism, but again, broadly speaking that's what you'll likely encounter. The most elaborate is Summoner, which notoriously has a rotation that is functionally three minutes long before it loops due to how their mechanics work.
Next, this is not an evaluation of how the classes feel to level. I don't really remember when each class comes together. There's only a few stand-out things I remember, like how Dragoon doesn't get an AOE for like, almost the entire base game.
Although I'm gonna talk about the classes as groups, you can't start the game as any class. Astrologian, Dark Knight, and Mechanist require you to get to Ishgard, which doesn't happen until level 50. Samurai and Red Mage require you to have purchased Stormblood and gotten to level 60 on a job, and Dancer and Gunbreaker require Shadowbringers and 70. You can't start the game as Ninja, just due to how that got added to the game. Also if you're curious about why the jobs are all like "You start as a Gladiator and then job change to a Paladin" it's because originally they were going to have it like old Final Fantasy games where you would have like, 30 levels in the tank job and 15 in the healer job and that unlocked Paladin as a job change blah blah blah, they abandoned that eventually because of this being a MMO. But because it's an MMO they also couldn't just easily undo what they did beforehand.
TANKS
Tanking is broadly what you'd expect. You keep attention of enemies, you rotate your defensive cooldowns to deal with tankbusters, you swap with your off-tank if you have to swap with your offtank. Dungeons are about picking up as much trash as you and your healer can handle and laughing. FF14 doesn't really change up the system in that regard.
Gladiator/Paladin - your sword and board style tank. Offers the party some incidental healing and damage reduction. Has a move where you throw up your shield and dramatic energy swoops out in a cone behind you and everyone behind you takes less damage because you're being a cool heroic guy with a shield. Has the ability to just straight up go "actually I'm taking all the damage of that party member". Your classic self-sacrificing noble knight guy aesthetically.
Marauder/Warrior - Berserker style tank. Can buff their own HP and self heal through raw grit. Has a damage cooldown that just makes everything they do Super Crit, and they want to just spam one skill that costs their meter during it. No thoughts head empty himbo gorilla.
Dark Knight - Edgelord style tank. Has lifesteal style effects, tries to maintain their MP so they can dump it into big hits. Can summon your inner darkness as a shadow clone DPS buff. Weirdly does not have a "yessss, hurt me more!" style mechanic despite all the framing.
Gunbreaker - "I wanted to play a DPS" style tank. Has a gunblade. Builds bullets during your DPS combo, which you then spend on a completely different DPS combo, which can be interspersed with a completely different DPS combo.
HEALZ
The thing about healers is that your goal is to do as little healing as possible. Over time the power of your off-GCD abilities has increased, so you'd really prefer to just mash your damage button throughout the entire fight, and then in the .5s before you can do something else you just bash out some oGCD AOE heal.
Conjurer/White Mage - You know what a white mage is. Regen-based healer. Builds up a powerful AOE nuke by using some of their heals. Has a regular AOE which stuns regular enemies, which hey, pretty useful for dungeons. But you know what a white mage is. You know if your class fantasy is "white mage" already.
Arcanist/Scholar - Nerd. Shield-based healer. Has a pet that does things. Can force the enemy to take more critical hits.
Astrologian - Chooses whether to be a regen or a shield healer at the start of the fight. Can eliminate all cast time on its abilities as a cooldown, and casts faster to begin with. Draws random tarot cards to dispense buffs to party members. A class for extremely cool and handsome people.
MELEE
First things first - do you like 3 move combos? Because absolutely every melee has 3 move combos. Usually they have multiple 3 move combos, and you show you're a Cool Dude by using the correct ones in the correct order.
Lancer/Dragoon - Have you played final fantasies before? Well I've got bad news for you about Jump in this game, it's a real time game so you can still be hit. Build up your Dragon Gauge to unlock the Eye of the Dragon to unlock different moves, to then unlock Both Eyes Of The Dragon to unlock different finishers. Infamous for jumping off ledges because the player didn't pay attention.
Pugilist/Monk - Rather than a series of 3 move combos, has 3 different stances that each move shifts them between. Which means your 3 hit combos just mush together in a candy-coated slur. I hope you like positional attacks, because some moves want you to hit the Back, and some want you to hit the Flank. Has a Hadouken.
Rogue/Ninja - Has the Ninjitsu ability, which does different things depending on which 3 buttons you dialed in to do your sick ninja hand symbols. Summons a giant toad. NOT a WoW rogue.
Samurai - Has two 3 move combos, and then....a two move combo. Each gives you a different sigil, and whether you have 1, 2, or 3 your Iaijutsu nuke does different things. Does not drink alcohol. Only straight-edge.
RANGED PHYSICAL
uh these guys are at range. they can all make the party run faster out of combat
Archer/Bard - Swaps between three song stances while maintaining DoTs and trying to proc a big arrow shot. Can play the electric guitar, but not in combat. What's even the point then?
Machinist - Shoot a man between the eyes, just to watch him die. Builds up heat which you spend mashing buttons. Summon a robot to punch the enemy.
Dancer - The most proc based rotation in the game! Has a 1-2 combo, but 1 can proc 3 and 2 can proc 4, in addition to the other resources you're building up. Lowest personal DPS, but chooses a party member as their dance partner, who gets ALL their DPS buffs.
WIZARRRRRDS
Do you hate cast times? Well then what the fuck are you doing here?
Thaumaturge/Black Mage - The turret DPS of the game. Sets down a wizard's circle and would rather die than leave. Blows all their MP on huge spells in their Fire stance, then swaps to an Ice stance to do less impressive things while their mana regens. Big Numbers.
Arcanist/Summoner - The DoT wizard! By which I mean "builds up to different fancy stances that make your nuke instant cast so you just blass that over and over again in that stance" wizard.
Red Mage - Has shitty fast-cast spells, and good slow-cast spells. But after they cast a spell, their next spell is instant. So you cast a shitty spell, and then you instantly cast a good spell! And THEN you dash forward and turn into a melee and do a 3 move combo and then you do a backflip and oh fuck you jumped off the edge like a Dragoon you really are a melee now.
Another win with Valla last night. Three people on my team were showing Valla, but my APM won out.
8-0 with top hero damage. If she’s available, I’m picking her first. I’ve had too many teammates die by playing way too forward and not behind the tank.

And also FF14 is awesome so I'm glad you're joining ducks!
FFXIV is great though, I play Red Mage which feels a lot like a WoW caster, very freeform rotation , resource management, a super fucking fun finisher that has you go into melee for some SICK SWORD SLASHES and then backflip off a ledge-- I mean, back into ranged and then you drop two fat nukes
Also every other cast is instant cast so that's rad
also FFXIV is cool because there's actually no reason a caster has to be at ranged like actually you wanna be in melee range for the most part for easier healing (so that your healers aoes hit everyone), there aren't really any like "must have x in ranged y in melee or get Punished" mechanics
also you get infinite rezzes in fights, not just two or w/e
Red Mage has a Rez they can make instant cast just because of how Dualcast works but also is a bit MP heavy, but it's better than your healers hardcasting a 10 cast or needing to burn their Swiftcast CD for it. Also has a decent heal spell!

The more I think about it the more I hate the Raynor suicide 20. It's just a shitty design decision, surrounded by a completely unnecessary rework that turned Raynor from a viable hero into a dumpster fire with a toxic late game talent.
I thought Raynor getting a "rework"* was weird, but at least it's redeemable if they just bump some of his numbers back up to get him back to viable. They clearly just overshot the mark on the overall damage nerf they gave him along with the talent overhaul.
And they should probably buff the weak talents like Ace in the Hole, Sustaining Rounds, Heavy Slugs. Not sure if others need buffing but those ones seem like the stand-out junk talents.
* Barely even a rework compared to most the others that have been done since everything about him still works basically the same as it used to.

also FFXIV is cool because there's actually no reason a caster has to be at ranged like actually you wanna be in melee range for the most part for easier healing (so that your healers aoes hit everyone), there aren't really any like "must have x in ranged y in melee or get Punished" mechanics
also you get infinite rezzes in fights, not just two or w/e
Red Mage has a Rez they can make instant cast just because of how Dualcast works but also is a bit MP heavy, but it's better than your healers hardcasting a 10 cast or needing to burn their Swiftcast CD for it. Also has a decent heal spell!
