The problem is that if I spend 20 dollars on lootboxes during an event, ie. a third of the price that I spent to buy the base game, there was no guarantee that I'd get even a majority of the content for that event, so buried under the RNG of a bunch of duplicates for things I already own. The rates are straight garbage, particularly for an aspect that supposedly doesn't matter that much whether or not people have them or not. I'm pretty sure after 4 digits of hours of play I still have Year One content not unlocked
If there was just a way to straight buy everything (or even just near-everything) guaranteed for a set price without the uncertainty of "maybe I'll get some of the stuff if I spend an amount of money equal to a smaller videogame", I'd probably be incentivised to spend more freely
some mobile gacha games hide essential characters behind drop rates that are worse, and more expensive, and make a ton of cash doing it

Well...those games actually make more money while having more exploitative systems.
Like they're basically preying on gambling addiction and the little reward system that's dangling around in our head but the shit works so I don't see it going away.
That said I do think being free to play vs. full priced colors perception a bit.
But from what I understand if we look at stuff like CoD and FIFA not that much
i mean, look at TF2 as also terrible but they also upped their game by allowing trading. Imagine if you could trade skins or sprays in OW...imagine if people could pay for keys to unlock boxes just like TF2...and then imagine that drops do matter because now you have different weapons or different ult drops or whatever...it starts getting crazy.
back to the patch, i'm really surprised they went forward with the hog buff but it's one of those things that i think makes a big difference at one level of play and probably not at another level. Their homogenizing the other tanks armor/health so that's kind of lame i guess.
It’s always interesting watching randoms fail to read the patch notes and act surprised by things like rein’s lower health and Moira’s higher ult charge rate.
Still waiting for harsher penalties for racism and misogyny.

That Moira buff really fucked things up, it completely negates the Reinhardt armor nerf because she can allow so much deathball now with the burst heal turnaround for fights. Plus Rein still has the stronger hammer.
Mei with no glasses feels illegal. And cornrows, really....

cornrows is common for female MMA, I just wonder if they did this for Mei not only for the pun but trying to connect to ex-champion Zhang Weili before she lost to Thug Rose over the weekend.
yeah I appreciate the effort and the reference and love the idea of tourney-specific skins, but boy am I not feeling the cornrows for Mei

As people on the social media have pointed out, it's funny that they released a character with cornrows before they released an actual African-American character in the game
In a a sort of "hahaha well that's a fuckin yikes" sort of funny
i really really do not want to start a fight but i'm pretty sure brazil and cuba is considered part of the americas (cuba being north), unless you specifically meant specifically united states/canada.

Genuine question - is it important that the black person be from the U.S. for it to count? Because Doom and Lucio are both black, but not from the U.S.
I won't argue that cornrows on Mei isn't a bad look (it is) but black folks do exist outside of the U.S.
(And if you want to hit them on a lack of black female representation, I'm right there with you on that, too.)

African American is a specific cultural group not "Person of African descent who is on American continent".

I mean this is a game that prides itself on having unique characters from very different backgrounds whose nationality is often a part of said character so...yes.
Sorry, maybe we're talking past each other. The complaint that "this character has cornrows but there are no African-Americans in the game" seems to ignore the people of African heritage that are in the game (Lucio specifically has both cornrows and dreds, from what I can tell).
If they had added another white character from the U.S. I would absolutely get the complaint, but in this case what does Mei having cornrows have to do with the U.S.?
I'm probably not explaining myself very well. Basically, if they have to be from the U.S. then make them anything other than white, but also just fucking make them from anywhere other than the U.S.

Oh yeah. Cornrows aren't a specifically AA hairstyle so that doesn't bother me much.
Aint no one mentioned Baptiste yet, the Healer from Haiti!
Sojourn, one of the OW2 characters, is black and ALSO Canadian. Gonna finally have a character who can throw down some obscenely Canadian references, so that's cool.
Actually no idea how I missed Baptiste. Sojourn I'm withholding judgment till I actually see her, I'm worried they'll end up treating her like an Ashe reskin personality wise
yeah it's absolutely ridculous how much damage a Sym can put out when the rest of the team is designed around protecting and enabling her

Are Mei and Doomfist big in OWL right now? Because that's who's littering the game along with McCree and Echo.
And I feel like DvA's mech recall has way too much of a radius than the mech's actual size. Either make baby DvA 100hp so she can't just bum rush into people to do a recall kill or increase her mech ult charge.

Doomfist has been making a comeback after folks swore he was unplayable and outside of the Baptiste nerf only reason I could see that being is because of OWL.
Doomfist has been played a bit in OWL, but he isn't meta. Mei has seen a fair bit of playtime, though.
I've heard him as somewhat of a Mei counter which is...sort of true? He sure screws with her game plan and knocks her way back from her ideal range but I'm still iffy on that idea.

playing doomfist is pain in solo q because literally 90% of games have cree on the other team masters+

Doomfist is also good against Baptiste since he can uppercut Bap out of lamp range. Mei is played a lot in OWL because wall is insanely good with a coordinated team.
Mei/McCree is the standard rush DPS duo but sometimes sym or doom replace the McCree. The Dallas Fuel have no hitscan but absolutely dominated teams running the default Mei/McCree with really innovative teleport strats and coordination on their rein comps.
Fuel also ran double bubble (Winston/Zarya/tracer, with the other DPS flexing based on map/point to sombra, reaper, echo, etc.), which is a calculated dive comp that builds a fast nano by purposefully taking tank dmg and then hard diving vulnerable targets with a nano winston. Played properly, teams can cycle sustain ults on tanks (nano helps winston build primal, with zarya and dps ults plugging holes when nano and primal are not available).
The problem with trying to copy the Fuel strats, particularly the sym strats, is that they rely on massive team coordination and calculated aggression. The Fuel swept the Shock and Outlaws (both great teams) by playing insanely quickly and decisively, with some truly nutty bap/ana play by Fielder and winston/rein by Fearless (who is the best tank in the world, imho). Trying to copy it with randos not used to the tempo will fail, and hard, with the team splintered.
Double bubble can be tough because it relies on good positional play and ult cycling, both missing in public games. Trying to copy these kinds of strats is prob a bad idea outside of organized play.
One thing that really stands out is that excellent coordination and timing can counter superior individual mechanics even on demanding heroes like tracer. The Fuel have no tracer specialist and ran Sparkle a lot on the hero despite his mid-tier (at best) mechanics. But Sparkle always timed his flanks with the dive perfectly to pick off temporarily weakened enemies before the enemy's superior sustained dmg output mattered. He wound up outperforming mechanically superior dps who did more raw dmg but contributed less to victory.
It's another reason why which stats matter are so context dependent. Some heroes can contribute a ton by outputting huge raw dmg (Ashe, for example) without necessarily securing kills, while other heroes like tracer can output far less raw dmg but contribute by securing kills, pressuring payload, etc.
So many people trying to grind ladder would be well-served to take a little time thinking about what their focus should be based on context rather than thinking "gold dmg good."
Had a weird run on junkrat this season. I have about a 66% win rate but it feels like I’m getting paired with really bad players, both for and against.
Like, I check their stats and I’m doing massively more than they are, like 30-50% more dmg per 10 and way better deaths to elims (I’m at 3.75 elims per death). I’m also averaging about 15 killing blows per 10.
I’m pretty much always highest dmg and elims on the server even when losing.
When I lose (outside of throwers/leavers), i don’t feel like the other team has outplayed me. Instead, it’s blindingly obvious that one or two teammates are hugely underperforming in obvious ways (like a dps partner who built 1 ult an entire control match while I had 5 tires and 9 ult kills, or an Ana who built nano once a round despite me killing the monkey diving her).
My play obviously needs improvement (like better accuracy on slim targets) but it’s frustrating not feeling in control of wins or losses.
Like, I just had a map in which I had by far most dmg on server and most kills, including over half the final blows for my team.
Problem is, the supports were lucio/zen and they didn’t coordinate at all (trans and beat at the same time in response to a single enemy ult) while the tanks literally stared straight ahead and never peeled for anyone.
So I tried peeling for the supports but they would panic and run directly into the pressure or run so far away that they might as well be dead. Supporting the tanks was suicide given I would get neither healing nor peel.
Flanking was the only available option but the enemy team had no pressure from anyone else so they could all turn on me and not get punished. Even when I got 2-3 kills on a flank, my team lost the follow-up despite being up numbers.
I lost more SR for that shit show than I gained for winning the previous game even though I still wound up outperforming every other dps on server by a decent margin.
I’ve also now turned all chat and voice off because people suck.
Edit: just deadlifted a team by winning a point at the last second with a 3 man tire and follow up kill while our MT stood still off point to throw. I will carry your dumb ass to victory if I have to.
It was funny when a support tried to claim I wasn’t getting picks until 30 final blows showed up as my card.
Just had a weird game on support where bap and I more than doubled the other team’s healing (we had 16k and 12k respectively, their highest was 7k by the opposing zen).
But it turns out that you can’t win if your team can’t outdmg the opposite zen/lucio.
I wound up with more environmental kills on brig (3) than one dps got in total final blows.
