Magic: the Elkening is a fantasy trading card game from Wizards of the Coast that has been in continuous production for over 25 years. You can check out the official website for more information on the franchise as a whole, including articles on game design, strategy, and lore.

The game is played in a variety of formats, from those that can include nearly every card ever printed, to formats that only use sealed product for deck building, to formats that only use common cards. You can find information about all of the official formats here, and both a quick-start guide and the comprehensive rules here.
Here’s a quick rundown of the supported formats:
Vintage – Old Expensive Elks that occasionally kill you
Legacy – Old elks that have gone to live on a farm upstate; Trees and the people who get uncomfortably close to them are banned
Modern – Middle age elk
Historic - Arena only Elks, older than Definitely Not Elks, but not as expansive as Middle age elks or Old elks
Pioneer – New Not Elks
Standard – Definitely Not Elks
Brawl – Elk-less
Commander – A few elks
Pauper – Only bad elks
Historic - Arena elks

There are also tons of unofficial formats that are supported by communities both online and at your local gaming store.

Arena is the latest digital version of the game, utilizing a free-to-play model and currently supporting the Definitely Not Elks and Elk-less format and current limited formats, as well as some occasional digital-only formats/oddballs. You can download the game here.

Magic Online is the original digital Magic platform and is still the primary official way to play non-Standard constructed formats online. They also run cube and chaos drafts on MTGO. It looks like an elks butt, but it gives you the Elkening experience. You can download the client here.

If you're interested in competitive play, you can find information on the various levels of paper competitive play here. In addition to Wizards' own high-level tournaments, Star City Games runs their own national tournament series with large monetary prizes and Invitational, you can find information on their tournaments here. (Sorry, just need to go to the old thread to grab the links for this section because being an elk, I'm bad at copying and pasting.)

The most recent set is Throne of Eldraine. It’s about David Bowie going around and turning people into Elks.

Some other resources:
TCGPlayer.com can help you find the market values of cards before you make a purchase or trade. They also have an iPhone/Android app that allows you to scan cards and find their value/catalog them.
MTG Goldfish also has a price tracker feature with graphs, as well as articles on the game.
Gatherer is the official card search engine from WotC, featuring up-to-date oracle text, errata, format legality, and important rulings for every elk in the game.
Channel Fireball has a lot of articles on elks.

Patch and M21 previews delayed for the day of mourning.

replies are as expected, a shitpile.

I'm personally fine with a wait, but literally no company is actually doing anything to support or promote the protests in any way, they are just pushing things back. In the corporate world this is probably just a fortuitous event where they can just push things back to give them breathing room for their release schedule that was affected by covid-19 without the negative press for doing so.

Wizards donated a load of money didn't they?

also delayed releases and announcements are enormous economic hits

also many companies have donation matching programs

    so

    this is just cynical bunk

Im not sure thats really mythic worthy. If someone is attacking into a 2/4 lifelink they are probably alphastriking anyway. The double spell may come up, but if someone is double casting spells after turn 4 you may be in a rougher spot than a 2/4 and an extra card will get you out of. The black legendary i saw looks much more interesting.

I think, given this was a Korean spoiler, there was just a miscommunication on the delay. A Spanish poster claimed WotC asked them to delay.

You can't write me off like that! You're just a voice, pal! You don't know a DAMN THING ABOUT RACING!!

Mythic for “narrow Legendary that is probably mostly for Commander” is a fine spot, since it lets rares be more impactful in limited.

Mythic rarity is a bad deal for players in the first place but if you are going to make a mythic one that's only interesting to commander players is more acceptable.

You say that, but white has a wide range of combat-oriented removal options. True, most of them are limited filler and not necessarily something you'd put in a Commander deck. That said, Wing Shards can solve a lot of problems and Teferi's Response is a clutch draw..

There's also, like, Path to Exile and Swords to Plowshares and Lightning Helix and Harm's Way (which is a brutal card that doesn't see enough play) and Exile and Condemn.

Mangara is cool and handsome, i feel like white can always use more card draw that isn't attached to a weak combat trick

That's an interesting path to walk down. White loves to set new rules for opponents (and occasionally themselves as well).

I'd also like to see white get some more things that mirror black's "powerful or off-colour effect, but you pay life/some other cost"

but instead it's "powerful effect, but opponent gains life/gets something else"

black pays life/sacs creatures to draw cards or kill things, white could give life or tokens to draw cards or kill things

what i'm saying is reprint swords to plowshares

  • NeveronNeveron SwedenRegistered User regular
"Exile target creature. Its controller draws a card."

Some examples of "can't" effects that could feasibly be turned into "if they do, draw a card" effects:

Cant attack/Block- probably needs to enchant only stuff you don't control, probably worse than straight-up Pacifism but might be fun in EDH
"Can't cast spells from anywhere other than their hands" - hilarious in Commander, probably really good against YawgWill effects, probably worse than just Magistrate unless there's politics involved
"Can't be blocked by [big creatures]" - might work, trades unblockability for deathtouch-esque value math
"Your opponents can't cast spells this turn" - seems nutso
"~ can't attack or block alone" - a man can dream
"Each player can't draw more than one card each turn" - the dream

Mangara already covers Moats and Rules of Laws, kind of.

Can't believe the mill keyword after saying they wouldn't for so long. New teferi seems fun. He'll be a 5 before your opponents first combat step. Also seems ridiculous in commander.

Seriously... and p.s. why not bring back phasing?!

this doesn't seem like the typical "easier for newer players" type of core set

    Does that mean

Teferi can tick up on by my turn and on my opponent's turn? Or is it still only once per round, meaning if I activate him on my turn, I can't do it again until the start of my next turn? Given the 10+ for the ult, I almost expect it to be the former.

Also, finally codifying mill as a keyword is interesting.

can be activated once on each players turn

so he can be at 5 loyalty before the opponents first combat phase

and is extra silly in games with more than two players

I assume it's based on Teferi, Temporal Archmage's emblem, which gives all your walkers the same ability. If so, you can activate him once on your turn, then once on your opponent's turn. Basically the rule that says "you can activate one loyalty ability if no loyalty abilities have been activated this turn" still applies, but the rule that says "you can activate loyalty abilities only when you could cast a sorcery" doesn't.
