I think it might be that people have found better outlets for their kinks on the internet and are better able to resist writing about it in their professional work, but I also haven't read a novel in a decade or longer so for all I know your average fantasy novel these days is nothing but kink.

Fantasy genre book thread, I maintain that the first three Wheel of Time books are pretty decent and come pretty close to being a self contained story. I don't recall exactly when things go completely off the rails. Do remember Rand constantly thinking he might be going crazy for a solid five books though.

I must say, I have no memory of the spank tents at all, but this conversation is now making me remember that the author did set up a whole civilization who A enslaves people who can use magic and B uses magic leashes to do so, so yeah Robert Jordan was workin through some stuff huh.

Do kids not read Famous Five, Animorphs, Choose Your Own Adventure, Chronicles Of Narnia, and books like that anymore? Or does the progression just go Clifford The Big Red Dog>Harry Potter>Twilight?

Well, Animorphs isn't really in print anymore, and there are new YA series out there.

Books keep advancing like any other media through generations. The old series are brought out as nostalgia.

Or if you're Disney they're brought out as shambling husks of what they originally were while wearing a smiling mask stitched from the eternal flesh of the Mouse. Fare thee well, Artemis Fowl movie.

Hate U Give, which is about the effects of a cop shooing an unarmed black teen, was/is very popular. I could not keep copies on my shelf. I haven't really seen any other big trends since that. Though I function with most titles having only one or two copies so it is harder for me to track it.

Yeah the nature of the game's story has me real nervous, considering it's being made by a bunch of Americans

But at the same time I'm very excited to play it? Probably a defect in my character I should examine

I'm pleasantly surprised to read about so many people tapping out with the Order of the Phoenix. I thought I was the only one. I was a Harry Potter superfan until Order of the Phoenix came out. After that one, I was considerably less excited for Half-Blood Prince and never even got around to reading book 7.

I mean for me when I read Harry Potter as a kid the parts I liked the most were all the normal school stuff, except instead of doing algebra they're learning how to fly and cast crazy spells.

It struck a good mix of regular school stuff that I could relate to, but also it's different cause magic.

Then the later books started going way more into the overarching plot of saving the world and focused less on them just being school kids which made them way less interesting to me.

Yeah. Plus, Order of the Phoenix also introduced a prophecy about the chosen one into the mix. And even though she did do something not-boilerplate with it, I was sick enough of that trope that I was rolling my eyes at the book even at the age of 12.

I will always chuckle at the final book reading exactly like every "post-HBP" story on fanfiction.net

Sudden ambush leading to an extended "hiding in the woods" sequence? Check

Invading the Malfoy mansion/Breaking into the wizard bank? Check

Big final battle asspull? You better believe that's a check

Voldemort coming back was the least interesting thing she could have done with those books.

  • H0b0manH0b0man Registered User regular
The only thing I can ever think of from the final book is just how fucking dumb the names Harry gives his kids are. It always comes to mind first and then I'm just laughing at it so much I can't even remember anything else from that book.

I kind of hope the gameplay sucks so that I'm not tempted to play it. Because despite how little regard they seem to have for the accuracy of their source material/actual history, I'm a sucker for an aesthetically pleasing Japan-inspired setting, and if the gameplay is good on top of it I might end up giving these very dumb people my money.

But also the Harry Potter epilogue is one of the most casually cruel middlefingers extended towards a fanbase I've ever seen, and I can't help but respect that.

Harry, having witnessed for himself the injustices perpetrated by the Ministry of Magic through his formative years, even gladly working under the directive of the Death Eaters without any sign of pushback, chose to become a wizard cop under that very same Ministry.

That's the stupidest part about the epilogue imo

Improving the system from within has long been seen as a heroic thing to do in modern culture. A sort of "putting your money where your mouth is" type deal. Harry trying to make a career out of combating evil wizards makes as much sense as anything else he would try to do.

The unexamined systematic problems with joining law enforcement and so on are not at all surprising. Many people still aren't there now, much less when HP7 came out.

The grand conclusion of this story that pivoted to becoming an attempt at a political tale of fighting fascism, racism, and deceitful government is “everyone marries their high school sweethearts and lives in the suburbs in white picket fence houses and becomes cops” and that is lame

So many people talk about how Harry Potter “taught them how to be liberal” when it is an extremely conservative story
